Edit: Now linkified!!!! (you'd think I'd know better having read that post in the other folder recently... My bad for not previewing)

Looks like the old WB Tuesday night line-up (circa '98) has run its course.

Buffy

Dawson

Basically, all of Dawson's casts contracts are up, and they all want to do movies. As far as Buffy, Les Moonves (head of UPN) wants to completely retool the network (as we've heard regarding Smackdown's future), and Buffy is too much per episode (especially if they try to lure back Gellar) and not drawing the desired ratings.

Granted, I haven't watched Dawson since, oh, '98, I've heard that he's not really on the show much anymore, and the show is now centered in Boston, thus negating the entire premise of the title. Go figure.

And as far as Buffy, ah well, the writing was on the wall. I can't say I didn't expect this, but still... Here's hoping for a(nother) spin-off...

That's the problem... there is none. There's so many possibilities being thrown at us and not one shred of finality. May being not that far away, that's a BAD thing. At this point I'd bet Buffy on UPN is toast. IF there's a spinoff show I'd think it'd be WB territory.

Moonves is a tool, one of the best parts of early CBS Letterman was his shots at the guy.

And hey, there's always MIRACLES... for now.

Dawson's Creek was always a waste of useable TV time. Buffy wsan't much better, but it had its moments. Frankly, Ireally don't have a use for UPN or WB at this point(at that includes Smakcdown).

Americans are a resolute people who have risen to every test of our time. Adversity has revealed the character of our country, to the world and to ourselves. America is a strong nation, and honorable in the use of our strength. We exercise power without conquest, and we sacrifice for the liberty of strangers. Americans are a free people, who know that freedom is the right of every person and the future of every nation. The liberty we prize is not America's gift to the world, it is God's gift to humanity.

BOO! Dawson's Creek was good for a couple of things. Basically it was good for giving Katie Holmes to me on TV and introducing me to Meredith Monroe.

Why can't they cancel Sabrina The Teenage Witch? That show should've been cancelled 3 years ago.

I don't know if you could tell anything about Buffy by this, but I know that Joss desperately tried to find a home for FireFly, and found no takers. Angel is as good as cancelled as well. I don't think Joss's works are considered a very hot commodities right now. If Buffy is going to stick around, it's going to have to be sold for MUCH cheaper than the last time around.

It SHOULD have been cancelled a year before it left ABC. And I think this should be the final year on the WB(or anywhere else for that matter).

To use Peter's avatar, MEREDITH~! Wonder what she's up to?

Anyhoo -- I thought there was a clause that would port Angel to UPN if WB canceled it.

There was, but I think there were conditions. Like, Buffy had to still be around so that UPN could fill in the post-Buffy timeslot with Angel.

That all banks on the WB cancelling it however (who knows because they threaten to every year, and never have), Buffy hanging around (unlikely), and UPN still existing next season (who knows?).

UPN will probably be around three or four more years, but I can't see Viacom keeping it around once most station contracts start to expire. They claim to run it separate from CBS, but CBS President=Les Moonves and UPN President=Les Moonves, so how can that be? This ensures that all decently developed shows will go to the Eye, and UPN will be stuck with also-rans that will only turn into hits by accident.

Granted there's no *official* confirmation on the site (link above), they do mention speaking to a UPN rep.

Doh! I'll edit the above post for the links (where it says "Buffy" and "Dawson".) How come CRZ didn't find that this needed to be "linkified"?

I haven't heard anything regarding Angel's chances other than the naysaying here, so I'm hoping that its only you guys being pessimistic. Still, losing Firefly and Buffy so close to each other cannot be a good sign. (But for crying out loud: Friday nights at 8??? What *were* they thinking???) My only question is that if Buffy is such a ratings drain, why are the reruns being syndicated on three different networks? (The NY Fox and UPN stations, and also FX)?

Buffy had a number things going wrong for them. 1) UPN is not as accesible as WB, so that hurt the ratings. 2) Season 6 was more about growing up than fighting, so some of the fans got bored, but realized how silly they were when the last four episodes aired. Attention, America has not. 3) UPN wants money not critically acclaimed. Even though Buffy makes everyone's top ten list almost every year, the show still loses money for the company, or at least thats what we are lead to believe in that article. The UPN heads are tools and have milked everything to death see Star Trek and Twilight Zone for refrence. And they wonder why Nemesis failed at the box office.

UPN is perhaps the weakest of the networks out there and it is no surprise that Vince wants out espically on a channel that premepts Smackdown in major markets. The networks are on their last legs, so killing Buffy first is not a major deal, it will be killing Buffy and probably Enterprise whle Smackdown leaves as well that will cause the most havoc for them. After that UPN will only have the black comedies which will go to BET or Comedy Central or ABC. Cancelling is the first sign of the death of UPN.

Buffy has been moving towards a "final season" type storyline all year long, so that's no surprise.

Angel has been so good this season that I hope it last for another year.

I just can't see Angel getting the boot for a few reasons.

1) Joss has stated those who are left after Buffy get the choice to go here or another Buffy spinoff, so there is that report. Apperantly, Joss feels strong enough about the show that he is already going to insert more cast members.

2) After the debacle that was Bird of Preys plus their other new shows are not gaining any steam, I can't see dropping Angel when its one of the few key shows left. I did love how everybody fawned over Birds initial rating, and how it was going to kill West Wing, Buffy and others. So, I was happy to see that show get trashed for that reason and the simple fact, it pissed all over the Batman legacy. Dawson was not key anymore, so I can see why it got cancelled. Angel is being pomoted heavily and is doing very well ratings wise, so it is going to stay.

3) The only rumor, I have heard about Angel being canned is from a poster on this website who brought in no evidence for their reasoing on this.

A Fan- My evidence lies in the last Buffy magazine where they interview Joss plus the fact that WB has been doing Angelus commericals all week while no other show is getting this type of hype during sweeps month.

The WB supposedly has strong development for this fall (no surprise, given that they're easily doing the best job of any network right now and a little affilate help would go a long way) and that could hurt Angel's chance for returning.

Potential WB fall sked:

SUNDAY
7/6c Smallville: Beginnings (speculation; Gilmore reruns will end in August and they'll need another show. Like GGirls, S'ville will be in its third season. It's the best choice.)
8/7c Charmed
9/8c ?

MONDAY
8/7c 7th Heaven
9/8c Everwood, unless they use it as an anchor somewhere else. Doubtful since it's getting good numbers in a tough slot, and the other nights are slanted in other directions than this show. If they wish to expand to Saturday (they won't,) it could be a good anchor, though ratings would fall.

TUESDAY
8/7c GILMORE GIRLS~!
9/8c Gilmore Girls spin-off; Jess gets the hell off of my television.

WEDNESDAY
8/7c Smallville
9/8c ?

THURSDAY
Reality night (High School Reunion is returning)

FRIDAY
TGIF night (What I Like About You, Reba, etc)

Odds are Smallville goes to Wednesday 8/7c, as they'll want to clear out Tuesday 9/8c for the Gilmore Girls spin-off that will follow the original. Thursday should remain reality night and Friday should stay youth-oriented like ABC's old TGIF.

The question is whether Jordan Levin and company feel S'ville and Angel are a good combination, or if they want to stick it back on Sundays. I don't see it being cancelled yet.

Re: Birds of Prey...it was GREAT news for The WB that it got such sampling and then ratings dropped off. This showed that the network has the ability to attract a decent number of people to a new show, and that those viewers aren't drones that will simply watch anything with young hotness. They're discerning viewers, the best you can have because they're so damn loyal when they find something they like. Now they just need a show that doesn't suck since it appears they'll be able to draw a decent sampling audience (at least for their penetration.)

If anyone doubts that The WB's problem is lack of affiliate strength, witness that in Los Angeles, where they are on a respectable station (KTLA 5,) prior to American Idol returning both Gilmore Girls and Smallville won their timeslots each week. Beat every network. (Now Fox kills everyone at 8p. Forgive me for not remembering if that's total viewers, households or 18-49, but any of the three is impressive.) Half the country gets them on stations like 49, and the slack-jawed yokels can't find them.

I think the Smallville and Angel combo works really well for them since they are going to a certain audience. This is my problem with UPN instead focusing in on the geek fans withe Enterprise/Buffy, they seperate it. I can see the logic of taking shows like that for anchors, but I would think UPN would like to win a night or two instead of flopping around. WB has done a good job with their line-up however, you can't run Gilmore Girls, three times a week. They need more shows and I think they can do it.

If they do get the new Buffy spin-off, I can see them putting it along side Angel, so they have the fans for the entire night instead of just an hour. They can put Smallville besides whatever new comic book show they run with this year that will tank. Note to WB, fans do care about the history of their favorite characters and not just chicks in leather. I don't understand why Gilmore Girls needs two shows since it looks like they can barely fill ari for the first hour. I'd keep everything the way it is no point in screwing with what works.

A Fan- I think Angel and the Buffy spin-off has a better chance if WB is strong since Buffy helped make the network and continues to do strong numbers for them.
