A.U.S.A., the new NBC Scott Foley sitcom premieres tomorrow. I'm not a big sitcom guy, especially for one on a network, but the main reason I'm checking this one out is because of one person, PHIL HENDRIE! Anyway, Phil makes his first live action TV appearance, and I'm pretty excited about it.

For those who do not know, Phil Hendrie is a radio talk show host personality whose KFI 640 show is nationally syndicated. Phil's "gimmick" so to speak is taking callers and guests who are pretty much the scum of the earth. They have the most extreme wrong sides of any issue, and they are truly the most pathetic evil nastiest form of life. But do you want to know the secret about these people? Phil Hendrie IS those people. Phil Hendrie portrays the voice of all the wacky guests and callers that speak on his show. Real people will listen to the show and think the guest is real and will call in outraged, not knowing this is all just a skit.

Phil's an interesting character. He's a liberal...or he at least claims to be, yet he takes the side on a lot of conservative/Rep. issues like guns, invading Iraq, activism, oil, etc. He's just recently turned 50 but he's in the comedic prime of his life, and his bride already had 4 kids of her own. Phil appears to be very pro-america and constantly rags on or criticizes his "liberal brethren" and liberal celebrity activists (ie Sean Penn, Michael Moore) speaking of how stupid and insensitive they are at times. When Phil performs, he uses his outlandish characters and provides biting, sarcastic social commentary that even puts SOUTH PARK to shame. For example after Opie and Anthony were fired, Phil did a bit as a stereotypical Irish Catholic priest with the thick accent and everything named James McWhorter. (NOTE: Phil was born and raised catholic but converted to new age Buddhism and is very bitter towards the catholic regime) Father McWhorter talked about how America has to stop its witch hunt on priests and pay real attention to "piss drinking satanists like Opie and Anthony who make people have sex in a catholic church." McWhorter talked about how his church was celebrating that the priest molestations were off the front page now b/c of the Opie and Anthony debacle, and you could hear organ music and rowdy priests in the background.

Another thing about Phil, is that he's been trying to break into TV for years. His ultimate goal is to get a tv show and have it be on long enough for it to be syndicated so he can retire. Currently he's working on an NBC sitcom pilot/series with Peter Tolan. It focuses on Phil who would play a security guard at Western Estates (for people who know Mr. Hendrie, yes its THAT western estates) who recently just got married to a woman who has a sketchy past and a teenaged son.

I love Phil, and I hope for the best for him. The thing is, for anyone that's seen a picture of Phil Hendrie, he is very much a "face for radio." I think he's going about it the wrong way. If he does a network series, it won't last. On his show he's painfully described the the process of working on his TV show, and I think he is just setting himself up for a fall. Phil's made appearances on shows like King of the Hill and futurama, and I think that Phil's material IS best suited for animation or a cable tv show like Larry David's CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM.

Anyway, good luck to you Phil, and I will be watching tomorrow!

I swear- Phil Hendrie is simply awesome. I did not know he was going to be on tomorrow night- I will have to check it out.
As far as his politics go- I like the way he thinks. It is refreshing to be able to agree with someone "on the other side of the aisle" as myself on certain issues- makes it easier to keep an open mind about the stuff we disagree on. Your traditional Liberal/Conservative argument rarely goes anywhere because the disagreement is not on the issues, rather the people making them.
Seriously- if you have never heard him, check him out. It is damned hilarious, and it is NOT a politics show, so do not worry about that. I would send you to his website to listen to a sample, but all of his archives are member's only, so you will just have to trust me. You will not regret it...

Anyway, about this sitcom. Scott Foley is the protagonist and plays an assistant DA I believe. Phil Hendrie plays a judge, but I don't know what his exact role in the show is and whether its temp. or recurring. However, I think this pilot was shot a long time ago, because I clearly remember Phil talking about playing a judge character in an NBC pilot when I first started listening to him in early 2002.

I saw two movies this past weekend. Allow me to review these two flicks, won't you? The Italian Job- Well, if you saw the trailers, you really did see most of the movie. What you didn't see were two great elongated action scenes.
