"Need to be a fan first, then worry about the other stuff."

Oh MAN am I gonna enjoy throwing THIS quote in your face at a later date.

Very, very good article. I've been going back and watching old Austin tapes, from early WCW stuff through to the GLORIOUS 2001 Heel Austin. And, unlike before, I am psyched for his return now. And work or not, it's so so refreshing to see someone talking that way about HHH. He's saying what we're all thinking! Who cares if it's a work or not?

Austin may be a lot of things to a lot of people, but he's definitely on the mark here with a lot of things. Awesome article from a person who obviously loves (hates) the business as much as we do.

You don't sound like a troll...just very opinionated and that's fine.

But...if I don't "mark out" for Austin when he returns, or cheer for him, I'm not a "REAL WRESTLING FAN"?

Got news for ya...I never liked Austin, never will. The character bores me, and I challenge him to entertain me.

That being said...a lot, a LOT, of people do like him. So..in the long run if this ends up being a good thing for the entertainment that I enjoy watching every week? Great! Bring him on. Just don't expect me to cheer or like him.

I hope you all feel the same way when Austin shows up on Smackdown, takes the belt off Angle, goes cleanly over Brock at Wrestlemania and starts up another fued with Undertaker.

(Hey, if everyone can make up psychotic HHH conspiracy theories every time Jericho loses a match or someone cuts their hair, I can throw this incredibly plausible scenario out there. You don't really think Austin isn't going to main event Wrestlemania, especially after his placement at last year's was the reason for his first hissy-fit, do you?)

Or perhaps think Richard, think. I am not saying other people don't have the right to see Austin back. But I don't want to...No...Shut up...You don't know everything...I really don't want to see him back. I never liked this guy. I never liked that he was supposed to be the "everyman". If that's the "everyman" let's all shoot ourselves in the shaft so there's less of them. A lot of people these days seek education and are articulate. Not everyone guzzles beer and flips people off needlessly. I always thought Austinw as overrated...And I won't mark out when he comes back, at all. I will roll my eyes, give it a chance, and then change the channel when it bores me.

And it will.

As for the "pathetic scrap" that is RAW, don't watch it if that's your opinion. I don't find RAW pathetic at all. What was pathetic on RAW, and this is my opinion, a minority opinion, but still just as valid as yours Mr. err...Motherfucker...Is when RAW consisted of Goldust and Luna lubing each other's puckers...then Austin doing an ass-damn-oh-hell-yeah promo identical to the one the week before...then dX coming out say the EXACT same lines from the week before...the LOD and the Headbangers have a match...then Kane does a squash...Sable rubs her tits...Rock comes out with the NOD in the one fun segment of the night...and the main event is Austin squashing someone. 1998 wasn't a golden age for wrestling fans, it was a golden age for those of us who whacked off to the Russo bullshit.

I like Booker T and RVD...I even like Kane...I like the women's division...There's plenty of good things about RAW these days and I do not want to go back. RAW could be better, but I don't think it sucks or I wouldn't watch. And neither would anyone else, despite their constant criticisms.

Austin wants to give WRESTLERS back WRESTLING? So let me ask you...how is hosing down people with beer or driving a zamboni into the ring "wrestling" anymore than dry fucking a mannequin? Austin was the first guy to take wrestling away from wrestlers and make it about who could talk the best. That's why McMahon was a heel above any wrestler on the roster. Talking was all that mattered. Why? Because Austin was broken down and fuse-necked. He couldn't go like he used to. People couldn't do moves they usually used. Maybe I think too much, but when they spend 2 months promoting Taker/Austin...and the entire world knows Austin can't take Undertaker's finisher, which was a piledriver at the time...It kind of spoils the surprise. Granted, after the second neck injury he came back better, but he's still the guy the epitomized sports entertainment. So let's all stop acting like limpdicks with no long-term memory and let's all stop pretending that Steve Austin was ever Jack fucking Brisco. Or even Triple H 1999 for that matter. He was never the best wrestler in the world, just the best talker, or monster truck driver, or cement truck wrecker of expensive automobiles. Jesus...Maybe if they put that kind of money into Benoit...Ah...Never mind, 'nother thread.

As for being a "real wrestling fan", if Austin the reason you watch, you're obvious not one. I don't consider myself smarky because, hell, I enjoy wrestling and apparently that against club rules. But I watch smackdown for wrestling and RAW because I hate football and there's always something good. I was watching before I knew he Austin was and probably will be after he's driven his truck off a bridge with a case of beer in a baby seat and a battered woman in the trunk. Okay that was a little much. But my "backspace" button is busted so what can I do?

Anyway, the moral of the post is that the only that makes me piss my pants is when my urine bag explodes. Not Austin. He was the biggest draw so I won't say he shouldn't come back, but I don't have to like it. Or watch it.

2001 was closer to 2003 then 1998 and in 2001, I saw this broken down fuse necked redneck pull of MOTY candidate after MOTY. I saw him take 10 german suplexes from Chris Benoit on that neck.

Austin's versatile. In the Attitude era, he delievered what people wanted, the big action, trainwreck type of stuff. WWF was incredibly lean on good top level talent. When he had a good opponent like Bret, Foley or Rock, he'd put on awesome matches. When he didn't, he'd have decent brawls with the Taker's. Austin's beer truck and all that served to entertain people in a light way, let them escape into wrestling and in the end, it built to a PPV match and it's hard to argue with the man's PPV success.

Times changed and the WWF got more guys that could wrestle so Austin changed his game. He showed he could more then go with guys like Benoit and Angle in non-brawls while still being able to deliver great brawls with HHH and Rock.

Don't sit there and tell me that with all the awesome matches that Austin has been involved in over his career, that the man isn't good in the ring.

I don't agree that everyone should be pissing their pants when he comes back and that everyone will markout because they won't. I'm skeptical with the on crack creative department that Austin will be put into something good.

I don't want to go back to 1998 and from his article, neither does Austin.

I don't know if someone responded to you privately or not, but I'm here to make sure your questions get answered.

1. Teo is a midget garbage wrestler who works for WWA. Someone (I can't remember who, I'm sure he'll identify himself) thinks it's amusing to refer to Triple H as Teo, thereby implying that Triple H isn't as important as he seems, I think.

I don't know, I'd kinda like to see if he could get *more* intense.
Man, reading about him "tearing the house down" in WCW makes me think back to the first time I saw him. He had just done... something (I was flipping through stations and missed the move)... to someone in WCW while part of the Hollywood Blondes, and was standing in front of the downed guy doing the "rolling the camera" gesture they used to do, all the while laughing mockingly at the guy. Sorry if I don't have many specifics about it, but up here in Winnipeg WCW was pretty much on about 4 minutes a week and I had never seen anything other than WWF at that point.

Damn, I still smile when I think of watching that.

If nothing else, like him or not, Steve Austin is drawing some PASSION out of some of us. (There's a difference between being passionate and being a troll, Davros, you're being passionate), which is awesome.

Steve Austin will never be my favorite wrestler, but I also know that the second the glass breaks, I'll be marking out like a mofo.

Austin is an exciting person to watch. He's got a great character and charisma that draws you to him. It's easy for fans (and myself) to connect with him. Fans want Steve Austin back, I want Steve Austin back.

I've learned to take everything I read with a grain of salt, but it sounds like as sick as he is of some of the WWE's BS, he's ready to come back and give the fans a treat.

You apparently have a very narrow definition of what wrestling is. While the corpse sex "sportz entertainment" crap has been emphasized in recent years, it is every bit a part of wrestling as the actual ringwork itself. It's just that it's being done very poorly. From what I read, what Austin meant is that wrestlers should simply have more control, not directly relating it to workrate/ringwork or whatever.

Instead of writers handing a script, word-for-word describing how a worker should drive a forklift and use it on his opponent, the WRESTLERS should be taking control and describing how they want to take a forklift and use it on their opponents.

Austin gave many great examples of his point, citing both Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan as guys who made themselves because they took charge and "stepped up," taking themselves to the next level based on how THEY saw their characters. The wrestlers should be the ones developing their own characters and coming up with their own material.

Hogan only got over when he took charge of his character and started Hulkamania in the AWA, that's when he started to catch on. It's definitely not that he stepped up his ringwork. We'll never see the next Hulk Hogan or Steve Austin if WWE keeps telling its workers what to do, and I think Austin was right about that.

That's why McMahon was a heel above any wrestler on the roster. Talking was all that mattered. Why? Because Austin was broken down and fuse-necked. He couldn't go like he used to.

Austin couldn't go like he used to? While he changed his style after settling into his face character, he put on a number of matches that gained critical praise as well as big buyrates. It's hard to argue with success, but I guess if you don't like it, that's up to you.

Three things.

1. I'm going to go nuts when I hear that glass break.

2. I agree with Austin's comment about creative direction regarding the formation of character. I think the WWE's guidance should be limited to things like: "You need to be a cocky heel. Go do it." If this was the case, don't you think Jericho would be much more amusing? I seem to remember the WWF telling him to distance himself from his WCW heelishness. I'm a big Jericho fan, and I would kill to see him do things along the lines of: "I have Prince Nakimaki's towel, Juvy's mask, Rey Mysterio's knee and Dean Malenko's dignity!" But it seems like this funny, evil, smart-ass Jericho has been expressly forbidden. I may be wrong; feel free to tell me so. Either way, I'd like it if wrestler's had more direction. Chaos might ensue, but the good stuff would rise to the top fairly soon.

3. I'm less worried about the Debra thing than most. We don't know the full story; we don't know if Debra went ballistic, too, and was trying to hit him in the head with a pan or something heavy. From the few (hideous) stories I've heard from friends in law enforcement, the unwritten rule is: when in doubt, bust the man, protect the woman... even if the woman is shrieking, frothing nuts. It's like the "tie goes to the runner" rule in little league baseball: if it's mutual violence, the responsibility and punishment falls on the man. I'm not saying this happened in the Austin/Debra incident (and I can't, because I've yet to see any full depositions detailing the incident); I suppose I'm trying to say that these are pretty muddy waters. And besides, wasn't Scott Steiner allegedly involved in an attempted rape? (Or was that someone else?) If so, shouldn't all this "[man] do bad things to [women]"-related ire be directed at him?

How do you mean Sklokazoid? We still saw Brock Lesnar, The Rock, and Kurt Angle rising to prominence all after Austin. Sure you can argue they probably aren't at his level or whatever. I think a problem with wrestling is that people like HHH have too much control over their "characters" and what they do on TV. You want to make it a competition and not a "performance" thing fine, but Austin never had to worry about his "performance" or spot during his runs until this thing with Brock Lesnar I suppose.

The thing is, I think its hypocritical of Austin to be pissed about the way business is being run now when it was him that led to the direction its taken. Austin was one of the main catalysts to drive the direction the WWF/E went in the last few years. Austin should look into the mirror and accept the blame, because like it or not, helped make WWE where it is currently at.

Unfortunately, the answers Mr. Boffo gave are incorrect.

1) TexasKelly (correct me if it was someone else) started calling HHH "Teo," and it was left alone for a few weeks. Finally, someone asked him what the hell he was trying to say, and he told us it was an acronym for "The Evil One."

2) When you quote someone's original post (not someone who has quoted a quote), you SHOULD only need the three ubb tags (enclosed on straight brackets, not dashes) -quotehead- at the beginning, -quotemid- after the name and before the quote, and -quoteend- at the end. Luckily, these tags are already there for you when you hit "Quote" so if you don't delete them or any html tags that the person has included in their own weird formatting, you shouldn't have a problem. If someone ADDS tags and doesn't close them, they're a jerk.

3) He knew damn well it was you.

I WAS glad to hear that Austin was returning. But after that article...I mean it was pretty obvious that he was burned out. 2 things that stood out in that article that sounded kinda ignorant were:

1. What if Bret Hart, Jake the Snake, hell even Savio Vega, what if THEY were the ones saying "this guy's not ready" or "the time isn't right", or whatever. Maybe it's a side-effect of hunger. But that sounded pretty damn dumb.

2. Wasn't the whole ad-lib thing, "just go out there and talk for a few minutes", wasn't that one of the downfalls of WCW. I do remember Nash and Steiner saying something about that before.

My point is, I'm starting to realize how much of a jack-ass he really is. YES I will still watch when he comes back. NO I will not mark-out like it's a Vince or Shane return. Or like that run-in he did to help Mankind win his 1st title. Like I've stated before, everybody gets burned-out sometimes and does some things they might regret. I just hope that he'll do the right thing and get off his high-horse pass the torch when he returns. And for the love of God, DO NOT RUIN WRESTLEMANIA'S MAIN EVENT. I have waited a long time for Lesnar and Angle to hook it up.

My god, common sense.

Come on people, do you honestly think that Vince would allow Austin an unedited shoot in a magazine owned by the WWE? By having him throw a couple of mild jibes in the direction of HHH and the Rock we now have the perfect set up for a huge money fight with either of these guys at WM.

Given that they probably won't be able to build up a match for Austin in time for No way Out Id put money on him evening up the numbers a bit when Steiner fights HHH, costing Trips the title and leading to another massive feud.

Alternatively, if they put him on Smackdown, have Vince help the Rock and Stone Cold come down for Hogan at No Way Out leading to face SCSA vs heel Rock, and Vince vs Hogan at WM.

Either way, the article gives a bit of spice to both matches, which was probably the intention all along.
