Fantasy Baseball Questions:

Thanks to Whitebacon for sending me his draft list. It got me thinking about which players I知 going to keep and protect for my draft. My league uses a traditional 4 by 4 point system. And I知 supposed to want younger players with more upside for the future after this year if they are worth holding.

My main problem is that (much like the Yankees) I have too many good pitchers. I can only keep 3 of the following out of six, and they are all close in ability.

Pick Three:

J. Beckett
J. Moyer
R. Clemens
Ra. Ortiz
P. Byrd
R. Reed

Also help me pick one of the following, or none if they both suck. Remember I知 in a 15 team league and it is very deep.

Outfield: R. Wynn vs. R. Ibanez
Shortstop: J. Valentin vs. A. Fox
Catcher: E. Marerro vs. J. Phelps

Thanks.

Beckett, Ortiz, and Clemens. If its keeper, you want to keep the youth, you never know when the geezers will die. And Clemens should be motivated through most of the season, so he get get to the benchmarks. As far as the hitters go, keep Marerro, and Wynn, both shortstops are cheap guys you can get later...in fact..you can probably get them all back in the draft, but I wouldn't bother with either guy you have. If you have to choose...I'd got with Valentin.

Only 15 teams? Mixed leagues?

Phelps is so much better than Marrero it isn't funny, but my guess is he will only qualify at DH.

As for the rest, if there are only 15 teams, I am not sure I would want to take up any of my offensive positions with any of the listed players. Ibanez is most likely a fluke. Winn will be platooning in Seattle this year. Fox? Be serious.

As for the pitchers:

Beckett and Moyer, but the rest could be had very late.

In what kind of fantasy baseball league draft would Moyer be taken early, and Clemens be left around until late? The league started up at the Royal Canadian Institute for the Criminally Insane?

Roger Clemens, coming off nagging injuries that limited him to 187 innings last year. Playing for a very good team, had an ERA of 4.24 and ratio of 1.29. Not outstanding numbers. His decline has to begin sometime and I would not bet that this isn't the year.

Jamie Moyer, finesse pitcher, yes, but coming off a year where he pitched 230 innings compiling an ERA of 3.33 and a ratio of 1.08, significantly better than Clemens. Added benefits to Moyer is he plays in an extreme pitchers park.

If you only go by name recognition and not the numbers, you will always be one step behind the competition. I owned Clemens last year, but I believe I will not this year. Someone will value him more than I.

And please, because you disagree with someone's opinion on someone, you don't need to make comments about their intelligence or sanity.

Thank you and please drive through.

In the kind of fantasy baseball universe where strikeouts do not count in the standings (such as in a 4x4, which was the league in question). I agree with Pieman; go with Beckett and Moyer. I'd throw in Ortiz as the third, unless you know that someone else will overvalue Clemens (in which case, trade him to that person as soon as possible).

As far as the hitters, if Phelps is eligible at catcher, keep him. Also, Jose Hernandez (I'm assuming that's the J. Hernandez) will be playing at Coors Field, so go with him (unless you get docked for strikeouts!). As for Wynn and Ibanez, if you get some type of compensation for not using all your keeper slots (short of just being able to add players after everyone has filled out their teams), then don't keep either. Otherwise, flip a coin.

Winn will get steals, Ibanez won't. Plus, Winn has a better shot at duplicating his numbers from last season, probably with a slightly lower homer total. The Mariners brought him in to be the starting left fielder. I forgot about 4x4 not using K's, but Moyer is OLD, you can't expect him to have years like 01 and 02 forever, and this year wouldn't shock me. keep Beckett and Ortiz, roll the dice on the third. Phelps will only be eligible at DH this year in most leagues. He only played one game at catcher last year, two at first, the rest as Toronto's DH. That said, he is still a talent, and if you want him to occupy your UTIL slot, and hope he becomes eligible at a real position later in the year, by all means, do it.

Moyer may be OLD, but he's about 3 1/2 months younger than Clemens. And, as Pieman pointed out, Moyer's numbers were significantly better than Clemens last year. Clemens is most valuable as trade bait because the perception of his value is higher than his actual value. You should be able to find someone to overpay for him (especially if there are Yankee fans in the league).

Thanks for the advice. I値l definitely stick with Moyer. I wish I could dump Beckett for all the crap he put me through last year, but due to his potential I値l keep him.

I think Clemens and Moyer are close. Clemens has more name value and can get more in a trade. He is also great against the bad teams like Tampa Bay. He has the chance of busting out another Cy Young season if I dump him.

His problems started last year when he took the mound on short rest to fill in for El Duque. To satisfy his pride in a meaningless April game he fucked up his entire season. He is hit or miss.

I also like that Reed is always solid, good for 15 wins a year. Last year he was 9-2 with a 2.88 ERA after the All-Star game.

For hitters, I think that Stolen Bases are overlooked. In Fantasy, they worth more than Homeruns since they are harder to come by. For that reason Marrero and Winn get a look. Also, Fox and Hairston can be good for 30 steals each. Florida and Seattle love to run the bases. I壇 rank Hairston in the top 10 2nd basemen in fantasy baseball.

I知 looking at Jose Valentin, ss, 25 HRs, but Jose Hernandez would be a step up.

Interesting note that ESPN痴 AL-only auction line valued Ibanez at $22 tied with Konerko as the 5th best AL 1st baseman. I think that is way too high and am also considering Ibanez may be a fluke.

Fox may or may not be sharing time with Alex Gonzalez.

I say Clemens simply because historically, he's been a better pitcher, and he should be motivated to get to 300 wins fast this season, and if he gets off to a quick start, you'll be able to find someone to give you a touch more than he's worth.

Reed is a nice safe, pick. When he's on, he's like a poor man's Greg Maddux, nothing wrong with keeping him.

I see Moyer coming back down much sooner than later. I'm shocked that they have Ibanez that high. I just finished a draft with 11 other mostly knowledgeable owners, and Ibanez was drafted a couple of spots later than Winn.

Ibanez: .294 24 HR 103 RBI 5 SBs
Winn: .298 14 HR 75 RBI 27 Sbs

The two are really similar, but Winn is two years younger than Ibanez, 28-30, and has numbers that are more realistic to repeat. On the other hand, Ibanez is eligible at first base as well.
