This could be politics or music, but I chose politics because it sends a bad message. It really doesn't matter if this kid is the greatest singer in the histroy of planet earth. The fact of the matter is that he is a US Marine and he should have been deployed as scheduled.
I have a serious time making exceptions for any individual based on a friviolous special need(including politicians for those of you ready to jump on that dead horse).

If Ted Williams had to fight in both WWII and Korea because he was called up, then someone trying to make a watered down Gong Show should not be allowed to have his deployment delayed.
Please help control the McMahon population. Have your Triple H's spayed or neutered.
Well Id give this kid a pass becaue its not like weve started doing any actual shooting yet. And believe it or not the guys in his unit are probably quite happy for him, so if they (and Marine Corp leadership) can handle that its good enough for me.
Ya know how we do it, big balling and big blingin'....
This is actually one of the Republicans I had a modicum of respect for, until I learned about this.

Yikes....Sanford is quite the dumbass for pulling a stunt like this. It's not like we weren't already getting ready for war or anything when he signed up.

Turns out the Idol kid isn't getting special treatment, as some talking head on some news show felt keen to tell me today. Or yesterday. I can't remember. Man, I hates bein' sick.
Three minutes and we're out of breath. Three minutes and we're beggin' for death.

On baseball players going to war, don't forget if Mays hadn't fought, he would hold the home run record, not Aaron.
You don't get it boy, this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table. And I'm the surgeon. Something tells me to stop with the leg. I don't listen to it. But where in the world is there in the world A man so extroardinaire?
I talked to my liberal girlfriend about this, and she thinks it is WONDERFUL! I could not understand why- she says "He is chasing a dream, and that is more important than the stupid military" Some times I wonder if her priorities are totally out of whack, or if it is a random thing... She actually believes that the military is pointless and we should not have one at all. I mean, I can kind of understand a "peace at all costs" mentality, but TOTALLY eliminating the military???
Maybe the Marines were hoping for whatever publicity they could get if the kid went deep into the competition? (Alas, presumably *not* going far enough to assume they'd get THIS kind of publicity first...)
Ack. It's not like one missing kid is going to turn the tide of a war that hasn't even started yet.
And, yeah, yeah, yeah, precident and all that jazz. It sounds like he had all his ducks in a row before he was scheduled to be shipped off, and he shouldn't be punished for trying to capitalize on opportunity.
Let him do the little singing gig and then when that's done he can join the rest of the troops.
RAW Satire 1/27 Buffy 7.12 gets a 7.0 There was a lot of good stuff mixed in with some of that mediocre dialog.

You're a better man than I. I am thankful that my girlfriend is a Republican(though one a little more centrist than I am)

Willie Mays is my favorite baseball player ever, but that's a really iffy statement. He would have needed 96 home runs in the about 1 & 3/4 seasons he missed (he played 34 games in 1952, hitting 4 homers). The guy only averaged 31.4 HR's a season, and only hit more than 50 twice. I'm not saying it would have been impossible, and he almost definitely would have broken Ruth's home run record, and therefor would have held the record for at least a year a two.
And even if he would have ended up with more than 755, Aaron would have been so close at the end of 1976 (when he retired) that he probably would have hung on another season in order to break the record.
Now, if Ted Williams hadn't missed time due to the army...

Ted Williams averaged 188 hits, 37 HR and 120 RBI per 162 games. He missed basically 4 and 3/4 years due to the war. Just using his average stats(and remember he missed this time during the prime of his career). He would've had 175 more HR, 893 more hits and 570 more RBI. So conservatively he would've finished with 696 HR, 3547 H, and 2409 RBI.
It's reltatively safe to say the Splinter would've had the HR and RBI records with ease.
EDIT: I was referring to Ruth's record of 714 and not Aaron's 755. Aaron probably would've broken the HR record later on if the stats held true.

Our local Fox channel ran this story on the news a few days ago and said that he was not getting deferred. It sounds like this argument is over.
Your analogy is similar to:
"They already have cars that you can drive, why not blenders?" "I can already write with my hands, why not my pancreas?" "They already have beef that I can eat, why not granite?"

I have the same problem with this kid as I do with Army/Navy football games. The armed forces should be training these men to protect, not throw a ball.
If this kid is not getting special treatment, good for him.
Hal: So, Dewey, I'm thinking our little Lego community needs a school. Dewey: Don't need it. Everyone's born smart. Hal: Aww, that's beautiful, son. It's a utopia. Dewey: And anyone stupid will be ground up for food. Hal: Oh. A cannibal utopia. Interesting.

The Army/Navy football players go through the EXACT same things as everyone else at their respective acadamies, PLUS the rigors of playing college football.

This explains why Baker is heading overseas. It made me curious since Powell seemed a perfectly acceptable Secretary of State. He always seemed one of the best members of the Cabinet. Speedy recovery and best wishes.
