Janeane Garofalo!!! So now, one of the most unfunny cast memembers of SNL (name one funny character or skit that she truly helped) is telling us not to go to war. But wait, she knows alot about this situation because she watches the news! And her fame, I mean in the past 4 years, she was on the Tom Green show telling Glenn to return, and maybe did a commercial or two... wow, we all should listen to her!

As a Republican, I'll be nice and give the Democrats and the anti-war activists a friendly hint: The more people from Hollywood/entertainment open their mouths about an issue, the less credibility they have. So, please encourage the Garafolo's, the Penn's, the Sheen's, the Streisand's etc. to keep talking, because the more they talk, the less effective they become.

Yes, because we should all follow the advice of Barbara Streisand and not go to war with Iran.

See, this bugs me, but not for reasons you might think. I SO like Garafalo. I mean, I am a big fan. When lefty psycho celebs like Streisand and Baldwin, who I do not like anyway, come out and tell me how nazi-like I am because I am a Rebublican, and I support X, it is no big deal because I hate them anyway. But when Garafalo or someone like THAT comes out and basically says the same thing, It causes serious issues. Half this country is Republican. I understand freedom of speech issues, but this sort of thing goes far beyond that. Why are these "celebrities" so willing to ostracise a good half of their fanbase, just so that they can seem important because they can spew acid about the topic of the day? Why does the press give them so much credibility in this regard? Look, I am not saying they have no right to say what they believe, but my question is that why do these celebrities and the press itself start with the assumption that since these are "famous people!" that everything that comes out of their mouths is a truth of great importance, and that I should automatically heed what they say! Fucking Garafalo- I won't ever be able to look at you the same again! *sob*
Hey, I read the NY Times and watch CNN everyday, and I never saw an article or a report on the breaking news that Jeaneane (how do you spell that anyway?) Garafalo is against the war in Iraq. Instead, I read it on a wrestling newsboard. That's hardly the "press giving them so much credibility in this regard," or "assuming that everything out of their mouths is of great importance."
Look, I hate Barbra Stiesand's little diatribes as much as the next guy. I find them incredibly embarrasing. But I am much MUCH more likely to read something along the lines of "Hah hah, Barbra Striesand's being an idiot again" than "Barbra Striesand had something very important to say about the war in Ira(n)q today." It's another one of those jujitsu-like "have the conservative media ridicule the liberal media even though the liberal media never actually did what the conservative media is ridiculing" moves. Hey, I'm not hating, I'm jealous. You guys are really good at it. We should start doing it also. The problem is we at least try to be, you know, fair and objective and non-sensationalist. We've got to cut that out.
And at least us liberals don't elect our celebrities to actually head a major lobbying organization or recruit them to run for Governor of California.
It seems that I am - in no particular order - Zack Morris, John Adams, a Siren, Aphrodite, Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel, Amy-Wynn Pastor, Hydrogen, Spider-Man, and Boston.

Reliable Sources on CNN this weekend provided most of its show to allow Garafalo to pontificate upon her beliefs. As for Arnold in California, the only reason I actually like him as a politician is that he is married into the Kennedy/Shriver family and is a Republican. Nothing nicer than sticking it to the Kennedy's in any manner.

I almost spit-taked my entire soda when I read this. Next thing you know Moe will believe in the tooth fairy. :)

I think the difference between people like Arnold and Heston is that they are physically out there politicking for an actual office. Heston is ALL ABOUT the NRA right now, and that is all he tries and comment about, becaue it is within his realm of current work. Arnold, like him or not, has his head screwed on straight when it comes to California politics, and has been "kinda" running for office, on a pro-children platform. I have heard him speak when he is in "politician" mode, and honestly he is somewhat convincing. I guess my point is that if a "Liberal" celebrity would run for office instead of making grand pronouncements as if they were already there, I would give them more respect. At least if they were doing that, they would have a bit more credibility coming from there. Conservative media? Huh? You mean the precious few radio programs that only Republicans listen to anyway, that are given no credibility by the mainstream (liberal) press? You mean that?
My big problem is, that she gets this much attention, and when asked where she learned what she thinks, she said she watches the news alot. Hell, I might be young (19), but I watch the news too, and I also have had several AP classes on government, and I'm not saying I'm some political expert or anything. I have my opinions, and hope others believe them too, but for someone to assume because they are an actor/actress and that there experiences allow them to tell us what to do because they watch "the news" and are educated is wrong. If this was a Shakespearen actor who you know, had a college degree in English or something, I would believe him or her a lot more. Just because someone is a good actor doesn't make them qualified to judge politics. Hell, by my life examples (acing the AP US and AP Comp Govt tests for college credit) I have the credibility to go on Fox News for half an hour.
Edited: Here is the "news" quote I talk about above: How did the 38-year-old actress drift into politics? "Now that I'm sober I watch a lot of news," she says, quickly adding that critics will snort: "See, she had a drinking problem! I knew she was crazy!"
That is taken from the Washington Post btw.

I think the point, Fuz, is not that she should not be criticizing her government (which she is perfectly allowed to do, I think we can all agree on that), it is that she is being presented as a political expert, whose opinion we should all heed and agree with, simple because she is a celebrity. There is a subtle difference there- but an important one! I guess I expect the media to present more credible "experts," but hey, I guess if an actor on CSI can be an expert on the forensics of the whole sniper thing out east, why can't an actress who "follows the news" be a legitimate political analyst? I long for the hard journalism of generations past- I really do...

I don't think anybody has a problem criticizing the government. It's the tendency to automatically take any celebrity seriously when they say such nonsense that's the problem.

As long as People Magazine still sells, and people read the articles in TV Guide, celebrities will always be able to get the media's attention when they take a stance on something. You can pull all your viewers from Entertainment Weekly (or whatever Celeb show you have) into your regular news broadcast if you give them some more stuff about their favorite celebrities.

So why would you take them at all seriously, much less automatically?
The first rule of following politics and staying sane is refusing to grant carte-blanche credibility to ANYONE, whether they're a celebrity, a politician, a media pundit or a gas station attendant. Even the trained "experts" and pundits have their own opinions and agendas, and any who claim to be truly neutral are the biggest bullshit artists of them all.
I'm interested in what Garofalo thinks, but not because she's a celebrity -- more so because she's NOT a politician or someone paid to broadcast their political views regularly. I'm also interested in what my local cab driver thinks, and for the same reason. Maybe they'd agree, maybe they wouldn't. But I don't artificially value Garofalo's opinions (or James Woods's, or Arnold's, or Bono's, or Streisand's, or Heston's, or Mike Farrell's, or any other celebrity's) over my cab driver's JUST because my cab driver's never been in a movie or cracked the Billboard charts. CNN might value them that way -- but that's CNN's problem.

You just summed up the majority of people who are supposed to have power in a democracy-the public. How about that, I guess we should leave the running of world affairs in the hands of those who "know the situation better". Because politicians, high-ranking public officials, etc. NEVER have their own agendas and ALWAYS do the right thing.

OldSchool I would answer your question as "Yes we should leave it in the hands of people who know better" That is why they are there. Should we not watch them and let then act in impunity? No, but do I want Janeane Garofalo making our countries decisions or leave it to the Colin Powell's of the world who have more information on a subject than you or I can receive by watching CNN or Fox News all day long.

They obviously (they being higher up politicans) do have agendas, but I would take the word of a Georgetown educated PhD who knows and has studied politics for years over the word of someone who knows the same as I do, or less, regardless of their agenda. Its good for everyone to have their own say obviously, but I still don't need to value one person's opinion over another.

Who's taking her seriously? Do you really think Mr. and Mrs. America were waiting with baited breath to hear Janeane Garofalo weigh in on the Iraq war?
