Always seems to be occasion for me to fade into deep thought while watching NFC playoff games on FOX. You see, every time - EVERY time there's an injury and they have to take it to a commercial break, they always use as a bumper not the more lusty, action-oriented "Theme from NFL on FOX" ... but the more somber, quiet, yes I would even say downright pensive "Theme from NFL on FOX (downtempo smooth jazz version)." And *every* time I hear it, without fail, I find myself pausing not only to consider the downfallen player, but indeed to reflect upon the fleeting nature of my own life. Have I done everything I could to make my world a better place? When they play that haunting piano refrain for me, will those watching me be similarly affected? Or will their examination end the moment a glimpse is caught of Garth Brooks' Good Friends The Crazy Old Man Playing Spoons As Well As The Guy Who Sneaks In A Violin Solo Between Every Line in the Dr Pepper commercial?

AND HOW COME every other artist had to imitate some OTHER artist in THEIR Dr Pepper commercial, yet Garth Brooks gets to imitate GARTH BROOKS? Was Chris Gaines unavailable or something? Also, what happened to the "Green Baywatch" Diet Dr Pepper ad because a weekly reminder that WOW isn't on is also a decent affirmation and opportunity for thoughtful reflection upon the world around us and our role in it.

In summary, my heart is with the Raiders and the Eagles but my head is still higher up on my body. Most of the time.

The lighter theme is appropriate. All of the other sport networks doing the same thing except for CBS, which oftentimes plays no bumper going out in these cases.

Eitherway, the lack of an uptempo bumper is appropriate considering the potential enormity of what the medical situation on the field.

Nothing of course tops the Sportscenter 'Someone has died or a tragedy has occurred theme.' If that does not make a person question the infinate size of the universe and the speck of dust that everything is within that space, nothing does.

The alternate, sad remix of the main theme song is one of the hallmarks of great television production. Where would we be without the sad version of the Price Is Right theme when somebody loses on "Hole In One (or Two)" with a really long putt that just rolled past the cup? And then the way they cut right back to the up-tempo main theme as Bob tells us they'll be right back, it's taking us from the lowest low to the highest high. The Brady Bunch had another notable sad remix for when someone was learning a particularly important lesson.

I wish Fox would go all out and take the next step by having an alternate set of crazy computer graphics so that, when someone gets hurt and is down on the field, they can pull up some graphics of the football playin' robots milling around nervously, metal claws on their steel hips and heads down, looking at the field and hoping for the injured player to get up and walk off the field under his own power. I think that would really bring home the gravity of the situation and the brotherhood of athletic competition, where even the robots are worried about injured players.

I forget which game it was, I'm thinking it was the Pittsburgh game, but there was a moment this week where somebody was down and they stayed with it for a while. You could feel the announcers preparing themselves to stick it out until the player got up or was moved out - which is probably one of the more difficult parts of a game to handle - but then they finally went to commercial. It was in that weird period of not going to commercial right away and hoping the guy would be back but not keeping it there for the whole time. I wonder if the director and producers have a set amount of time they usually wait until they go to commercial, like a 2-point conversion chart.

Holy cow, you're totally right. Geez, I think I actually prefer the elevator music from that one "This is SportsCenter" spot to THAT thing. But on the other hand, in its own way it helps me to "never forget...never forget" so, in a small way, I also feel grateful. Ah, music.

Dr Unlikely: But would the robots pray? And to whom/what would they pray if they did? Powerful things to think about, indeed...because those robots look pretty powerful!

Grimis: I think my point may have escaped when I got swept up in a mood...really, it's two points: 1) I really don't think they need to drop everything for commercials as soon as possible, 2) I think I'd actually prefer NO music to that driven, emotionally wrenching variation that will be stuck in my head for probably the rest of my life, playing silently in the music of my mind every time I befall personal tragedy. Whoops, I think I got swept up again. ;-)

This phenomenon (not limited to ESPN) has led to my circle of friends announcing a pop culture death as "playing the piano", complete with pantomime piano playing.

When a sports person dies, we usually metaphorically take bets on whether they get the sad music, the pseudo-marble background and the (born-died) dates.

The robots are a good idea, but that just isn't enough. When someone gets hurt, they need is somber way to retract that scoreboard at the top of the screen before going to commercial. Instead of the quick retraction and vacuum sound effect, they should have the scoreboard retract slowly and have a somber whirring sound as it disappears off the screen. Combine that with the slow jazz music and concerned robots, I dare you to find somebody who wouldn't get choked up.

The robots could pray to Bender on Futurama, thus FOX would be able to get cross-promotional material into an injury. This is the same network giving us elephant vs. midget plane pulls, so it wouldn't shock me if they did that.

By the way...did anybody have "just over two minutes into the game" in the pool?

I was SOOOOO certain that the Bucs were gonna lose (as usual) that I went to sleep at 11:30 before the game started. (I took the porn shop job by the way... LONG nights!)

I got woken up about 15 minutes ago with what sounds like world war 3. I look outside and sure enough, I'm seeing explosions up in the sky and shit. It takes my 5 seconds to put 2 and 2 together and I take a gander at the Yahoo sports page and sure enough, TO THE SHOCK(and possibly delight) OF EVERYONE IN TAMPA, the Bucs are going to the superbowl.

I had $50 on it being the Eagles and the Titans this year, with the Titans going on to win... I REALLY hope they still win, cause it's gonna suck if they don't.

He's gone. He's also in trouble for the fact USF can't win a game in November and December these last few seasons. I wonder who they can get to replace him.. probably a small hire I would assume.
