A while back, I thought the next mid carder to hit it big would be Edge. I was a big fan of his with E&C and still think they are in the top five tag teams of all time. It seemed a foregone conclusion that Edge would break out and be the next SuperStar to hit the Main Event. But now, I think that his time will never come. Edge is missing something that can make his a true super star. I have been thinking about this for a while and finally figured it out. All the current super stars (Austin, Undertaker, Jericho, Benoit, Angle, Rock, Booker T, HBK, HHH, Kane) have been able to seemlessly flow from face to heel. Even the Dudleys go from face to heel. All of the above have been hated and loved at one time. But Edge has always been "cool". Even with E&C, he was still cheered for and never really hated as a true heel. To me, Edge has to be able to pull off a true heel persona before he can be a true Super Star.

This is just a thought of mine but I would love to hear back from everyone to see if they feel the same way.

I disagree with your argument and your use of Creed lyrics.
In my opinion, it takes three times the superstar to be a good face than a good heel. It seems much easier to play the heel in one form or another (whether you're the guy who beats people up, or an egotistical jerk, or you just smile sinister and rub your hands). But to get true face pops and be loved by the crowd on a large level can be very hard to do.
Faces are a rarity these days. Leave Edge as the good guy.

He needs a haircut and a character overhaul. Get rid of the wise-ass persona and smart-ass jokes. Stop using the Spear as a finisher, and work on his long-term selling a bit (i.e. don't Spear with a shoulder that's been worked on the entire match). He's basically been the same character for the past few years, and it just seems like he needs a change to propel him to the next level.

And I'm not following you around looking to be contrary, it just seems that way, :)

I agree with you on Sting as he has always been a face andI do agree that it is tougher to get over as a face than a heel, but what I am saying is in TODAYS WWE, there is no one who has been a face, stayed a face and been a champion.

Dear me Parts, ever since Torchslasher brought to our attention the foolishness of riling you you've become quite the cantankerous young lad haven't you. Or are you just trying to prove your point that being a heels a piss in the park compared to being the nice guy.

Edge needs to lose the "End of WCW Booker T" vibe. This is especially true after the whole "get up there and stick your tounge up the fans' collective anus" thing at the end of the tenth anniversary special. Making fun of the town is a heel's cheap heat crutch that always ends up hurting their character. Conversely, unabashed sucking up to the fans is the face's cheap heat crutch that always backfires in the long run.

Sting and Edge are somewhat similar.... both have tons of "finishing moves" named after them that never end matches and both commonly win with a random move... and both were big enough to not worry about size but small enough to be an underdog aganist the "Hosses"

For some reason I keep having the feeling Edge will be a heel by the time Mania comes around to face Benoit. He's getting the ultra-face push that generally means he's on the verge of a shocking heel turn treatment right now, and if we are doing long term booking as Lesnar holding the belt after Mania, Edge could be built up as a heel by the time Angle's rematch is taken care of.

i just keep thinking that edge had such a distinctive personality as a heel ("this is where we run in and cost the Hardyz the tag belts") and is now the blandest face around. he really could have kept that same personality -- just generally a dick to people, but in a funny way -- as a face, but he seems to have abandoned it for cheap pops and bland face-ness.

Never got old for Rick Rude ;)

Edge bores me to tears now. He used to be alright back when he first came in and didn't speak much. What ever happened to him sitting up in the rafters and coming to the ring through the audience. That was pretty cool haw the did the swinging camera gimmick to find out where he was coming from each week.

This makes me miss Gangrel and Luna.

Hi,

I've been an Edge mark since just before the Brood days, mostly because of his character at that time. I followed him through his reinvention, and have enjoyed seeing him rise as high as he has. But, as much as I'd like to see it, I don't quite see him going up to that WWE Champion/main eventer spot. I'm not sure what it is, but I wonder if it's something about him physically (his hair is just fine....what's he gonna do, walk around looking like Raven? Playa please! By the way, I am suddenly reminded of Summerslam during Edge's match against Eddy, a group of like 3 or 4 clean cut frat-boy yuppie types in my section kept yelling at Edge to get a damn haircut already, even trying desperately to get a "Cut your hair" chant going. The look of utter disappointment on their faces when they realized that it wasn't catching on was more than priceless! Has this been the longest parenthetical ever?).

He just seems kinda.....lanky.

I think Edge should be the one who benefits from The Rock's heel turn. The face that Rock puts over on his way to his next movie break.

Fully agree, Rock could do wonders for Edge. Forge a partnership and have Rock beat his ass. Make Edge the underdog, triumphant win, one more main eventer.

Memo to Edge:

Cut Your Hair
Find a New Look (he's still using the Brood look!)
Hit the Gym -or-
Start Juicing
Get a Believable Finisher (spears A-Train, gets the win ... please)
Get a Tooth Reduction
Steal Christian's Heel Character
Three Words: New Entrance Theme!
Try to Buy a Personality (maybe Flair has his for sale)
Definitely Lose the Shiny Trench Coat
Find a New Career Choice

Sorry, but I'm no "Edge Head" and I'm tired of being force fed Edge when Booker T, RVD, D-Lo, Raven, etc., are all languishing in Raw midcard Hell.

Tell me I didn't just say that.

You may not like him but he's one of the most over guys on the roster. This is how WWE seems to be thinking, picking apart guys and focusing on their weaknesses instead of just running with guys people seem to dig.

I would argue that Edge is languishing in Smackdown midcard Hell, as opposed to being pushed down our faces, along with anyone not named A-Train or Big Show. It's Bill DeMott that's being pushed down people's faces, when its obvious that guys like Eddy Guerrero, Edge, and Matt Hardy, Ver. 1.0, are over.

Right, I suppose I can't really begrudge the man his opinion. I was just taken aback. I heard about a lot of what he writes, I don't think I was really ready for his bluntness. But I suppose that's the hook.
