Like I said in the original Raw X thread, I was at a party, so I didn't see it. I read the recaps, and here are a few knee-jerk reactions...

The Rock? Just make him a heel, already!

Let's see, it's true that most of the clips were from '97-onward, probably except for the opening. I can remember plenty (well, as much as I can) from before '97, other than the Pillman gun thing.

WHO HERE remembers Goldust literally creeping out Vince McMahon with the words, "Is that a microphone in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

WHO HERE remembers the late, great Owen Hart, giving HBK the best enzuguiri in the USA, putting out Mr Michaels for the rest of the show?

WHO HERE remembers the RAW BOWL?

WHO HERE remembers HHH beating Marc Mero to win the IC title for the very first time?

Okay, I may not remember as much as I thought, but these things happened before '97. A couple should've been included in the show, I think. Well, when the VCR stopped recording, I decided to pay tribute to RAW in a more comfortable way, popping in one of my favorite episodes. Yeah, like I'm gonna tell you which one. Why don't you guys guess which RAW I watched coming home last night?

I actually watched the show, and I thought it was pretty sad. ZERO special guests. Hell, I knew the evening was off to a bad start when Mick Foley "could not be here tonight." And the Rock getting BORING chants? I totally got that "pre-taped" vibe from the Rock's promo too-
And talking shit to a helicopter?
On the whole, it was pretty sorry. I thought Angle, T and dust, and Jericho were entertaining, but that was the extent of it. I was hoping for MORE old clips, MORE history, and less prancing around on a podium and LESS modern times.
This show definitly did NOT rekindle interest in the WWE for me..... and that was what I was really hoping it would do...

Am I the only one who finds it odd that the person who thanks you for watching RAW for the last decade and can't wait until the 20th anniversary show is on SD? Really push that competition between the brands by having Edge pimp RAW at the end.

Were they trying to make it bad on purpose? That's the only explanation I can think of.

I invited friends over, we had a 12-pack of beer, ready to reminisce and laugh about the good old days. Instead, we got some recycled promo packages, and a bunch of podium speeches. The ONLY things that we enjoyed were the gimmicks montage, the sick bumps and the Bret montage. All the rest was garbage, spliced with big blocks of commercials.

So, they give awards to Rock, Austin and Mick Foley, probably their three biggest guys during the boom years and can't get ANY of them to show up? Way to make the rest of your roster look like a junior varsity squad.

And their forget-the-past style of history telling was blatantly on display. Hell, anything that didn't happen during the last 2 years got barely a notice. Jeff Hardy/Undertaker was one of the best matches EVER? Entertaining, sure, but nowhere near the realm of greatness. TLC 2002? Please.

Why, oh why, do they continue to shit all over their history? Why do they act like the past never existed? Because when you get down to it, Vince has screwed, injured, cheated or manipulated all of his employees. Everyone who was not at "The Word" was not there because they have been left bitter and probably broken down. No wonder Mick didn't show, he crippled his body for a company and STILL doesn't want to be associated with this current shit. Bret Hart's brother died in the ring and they didn't have the decency to stop the show. Austin broke his neck while on the job. The ones that were at Tuesday's show just haven't gotten theirs yet. In the words of Bret's wife, "What goes around comes around."

And their disengenuous "thank you" to the fans didn't help at all. If they want to thank us, give us a good show, not lukewarm, eye-rolling applause at the end.

Well, I'm just lucky that some of the great moments they did overlook are in my video collection. It kinda makes me feel smarter than them, apparently.

You know...that show sucked bigtime. I knew that the show would be a total manipulation and re-working of history, but damn, that was bad. I wish that a 3rd party had done the show. Like I said yesterday, a wrestling writer or fan could make a better show for Raw's 10th than Vince. There should have been no mentino of current storylines or current happenings. It should have been a tribute to the past 10 years. But instead, it was a chance for Vince to be vindictive again on live TV. To try to sell the Royal rumble, a chance for WWE to try to push the new talent instead of paying tribute to the past. I thought that is what that show was supposed to be about?

What is up with the Rock getting a 20 minute promo? It was so boring and pointless. If it was pre-taped, why not splice some video of the matches he was talking about in there? Why have people "in character"? Why not let people actually give tribute to the biggest wrestling show in history?

I knew that it will be wrestlecrap, and I wish that I would have been wrong. I hoped it would be something I could watch 5 years from now and smile. But instead, I will be taping the NFC Championship game over that show this weekend.

The really sad thing about the RAW X show is that it had all the ingredients available to be a great show for marks and smarts and remind people of how the company has changed in the past decade.
The three 'masterminds' of the 90's boom all are under contract. Why not have a piece where Vince is asked why he switched from the syndication and Prime Time Wrestling formula that he had used since the 80's and risked switching to RAW. Then, why switch the direction of the company in '94, '97. And then ask him what he can see as the direction of the company in the next several years.
After that, ask Bischoff why he decided to go head to head with RAW, instead of on another night or time slot. What convinced him to expand Nitro to 2 then 3 hours. And finally, what he took from RAW to make Nitro a success.
Finally, you have Heyman. Ask him why ECW invading RAW in '96 and '97 was important to his company. Ask him how ECW impacted the changes in RAW.
By doing this, you give the fans a look at the changes in the business in the context that the wrestling world revolved around RAW. Throw in clip segments of great title matches, feuds etc, dump the awards (maybe keep match of the decade [which was a joke] and superstar of the decade), have short comments by current and former wrestlers on the importance of RAW, and you have a show that would have received far better review from those watching it. It still would have been a 'Universe revolves around the McMahon show' but it would have been better than what was shown.

You will never, EVER, hear Paul Heyman being allowed to discuss the influence of ECW on a WWE show. Vince invented attitude, and don't you forget it!!

This would have worked much, much better with just JR and King sitting in a studio introducing classic clips for two hours. Of the top ten "Raw Moments," didn't anyone notice that NOT ONE of them involved actual wrestling. Plus, by all accounts, the live crowd felt pretty badly ripped off. Reminds why I haven't watched a full episode of Raw in months now.

Boring. What could have been a real retrospective of RAW, with more clips covering more people and more time than post 1997 was turned into a quasi-awards show with three award winners "unable to show up". What, exactly, was the point of giving them the awards if that was going to be the case? Waste of time, and a lost opportunity for the WWE.

But he already did, with that end-of-the-Alliance promo from pre-Survivor Series `01 (that was when it was, right?).

Yknow, I really try to look for the positive side when I'm watching WWE programing and not let the negative drag me down, but GODDAMN was I bummed last night.

Asteroidboy was right on when he said he was ready to reminisce about the good old days; thats the main reason I think most people were psyched about the show. And instead we got mostly mediocre stuff from the 2000's. Huh? What was the thinking here, cuz I don't get it. I won't even dignify it by comparing it to the Slammys, cuz the Slammys weren't hyped up as being a glorious celebration of HISTORY.

Don't get me wrong, Team Angle, Shane, Jercho, Christian & BookDust were all great, and I absolutely loved RVD faking out the other TLC guys so he could make his own speech. The video packages were all great as usual, but some of those bad gimmick choices were way off base.

I mean really, I went into the show with snacks and good humor and up until the 2nd award I was enjoying the show (Trish winning the Diva award was right on IMO) but everything after that made me feel like I was watching a trainwreck. The "fans" at the World didn't help things either; I knew they were going to be a distraction the minute that guy started heckling Shane.

Eh. I'm not up in arms about it or anything, but they could have and should have done a million times better.

Since I've already expressed my opinion on the anniversay program in another thread, I'll just say here that Triple H and Ric Flair are the smartest members of the company, as they had enough sense to walk out before the show ended. Rather, the point of this post is 1997. Several wieners in this and the other thread have pointed out that virtually nothing pre-1997 on RAW was highlighted during the show. Being my normal curious self, I checked out WWE's "Best of Raw" DVD/VHS Series on Amazon.com, and noticed that Volume 1 begins with 1997 and goes forward from there. So my question is "Why?". Why does WWE ignore the initial years of its signature television program? I could understand (though not agree) with a decision to focus on the more recent during the anniversary show, but I can't imagine why WWE would ignore those years in its DVD/VHS series, seeing as it would provide them with at least another couple of volumes to sell. Now, I could hypothesize a possible answer (i.e. the rights to those shows are at least partly owned by USA network, and/or the McMahon's former partners in Titan Sports and/or Colliseum Video; Vince doesn't want to be shown in his pre-"evil owner" incantation; Vince doesn't want anything to do with anything from the years when he was fighting the U.S. Justice Dept., etc.) but that would just be conjecture on my part. Does anyone here have a solid answer as to why this is, or at least a solid lead as to where an answer may be found?

I rewatched the Kid Rock intro video again last night and that has to be one of the best damned pump-me-up-for-a-show video piece they've done. It's mandatory viewing at live events now, along with the Desire Federation history video.

The WWE could put on 2 hours of Kevin Kelly sitting on the toilet reading a phone book, and I'd still watch next week.
