Do threads still lock themselves around the 100 mark? Or was that EZ-Board?

What a trainwreck. I actually felt bad for some of the people there, like Edge. He seems like a guy who actually watched all ten years of Raw, even before he made it to the WWF, and everything in his demeanor at the end was that of a guy who knew that everything that could have gone wrong had done so. Matt Hardy had a similar defeated-but-thanks-for-the-effort look when he made his toast to Bubba Ray.

Arguably, none of the biggest stars of the past decade were there. No Austin, Rock, Foley, Undertaker or Bret. Things went wrong early when Booker rolled his eyes before reading Foley's name off as a winner, knowing it was going to turn the crowd hostile, and he was right as the first booing of the night kicked up. Foley not being there got booed. Rock's pre-taped marathon speech got booed. Vince got booed. HHH got some boos when they showed his package (no, not that one - though he tried) for Superstar of the Decade. UT's got almost no reaction (but I really do think that was a case of the audio on the package getting accidentally too high to hear the crowd, he would have gotten cheers, yeah?). And the two guys who may or may not be in exile from the company - the two guys who had the feud that set the standard for the company for its resurrection - Bret and Austin got cheers and chants begging for them to show up. Yikes. If nothing else, maybe that's an idication that what they are showing isn't what the people want to see?

Did they promise Bret and Austin? Most certainly not. Does that mean people shouldn't be disappointed that they ended up not being there? I dunno, but those Austin clips sure reminded me of how amazing he was and how he took a show in trouble and revitalized it. Forget the actual beerbath, what about that killer interview where he laced into Vince and Rock right before hand? How about "Oh, don't worry nurse, I'll take it from here?" or the confrontation with Tyson?

I think people do have a reason to be disappointed. This is something that the WWF used to do well. Remember those SummerSlam flashbacks a few years ago, when they were still on USA? Shawn Michaels watching old footage of himself and laughing about old times and that great line about still having babyfat? Last night, they made the worst possible format decision, because it was the one that would most alienate the crowd and viewers. A recollection show would have had more time for old footage and would have let the superstars themselves have a chance to talk about what the show has meant.

I liked the package remembering the dead, hell, I even liked the sad remix (take that, NFL on Fox) of "Tell Me a Lie". I'm glad they showed two of my favorite clips as far as being so perfectly over the top to become supremely hilarious (Austin vs. Pillman's House and Kane utilizing his Deadly Mystical Lightning). And Angle and Jericho did what they could to entertain, but I think they both knew it was a lost cause.

Overall, though, yes - I really did expect something different than what they got. I was hoping for better segments actually going over some of the truly great moments the last ten years produced - I wanted a chance to see Bret vs. Austin, Bret vs. Rock, Austin vs. Dude Love, Bret vs. Owen, HHH vs. Rock and all that stuff that took place over the ten years but we can't see anymore. Or something. I don't know. I'm not heartbroken or anything, it was just a big missed opportunity for something really cool.

Maybe it is my fault, but really, all I wanted was to see a really well-planned presentation of the best and most important moments of the show's history and a little context to tie it all together. And also for Bret and Austin to return and inject HHH with a deadly neurotoxin. Is that too much to ask? I don't think so, friends.

For someone who was there live let me set some things straight.

1. The people working at the World told us Bret and Rock were there. So, I know the home audience may not have a reason to yell, but I do. I don't like being lied or even led on about this shit espiecally after standing 3 and half hours in the freezing cold.

2. Rock is going heel thanks to NY. The New York crowd was not happy. Standing outside for three hours in the cold and tak on an extra half hour for some unknown reason got the crowd pissed. Bubbha, Stacy and RVD came out to say hi that settled everyone down a bit.

3. Seating was horrific. If you wanted to eat, there was a $20 minium to purchase plus fighting the crowd and management for tables. The waitress we had was great and saved most of the night by letting us stay there instead of kicking us out like she was supposed to.

4. The show felt slapped together. They did some interviews with the stars during the breaks, but by the end the wrestlers didn't care to speak. When Austin no showed for wrestler of the year, people began leaving.

A Fan- Probably the worst WWF experience I have ever had.

This would have been fine, and classier, if it was just JR and King in a studio in Stamford going year by year over the best clips for ten years. No anticipated no-shows. No superstars on video feed. No gratuitous male ass. Hell, if they might be worried that the past might look better than the present, leave it as an hour show so that you have less time to focus on each year, and how good or bad it might have been. No one asked to find out who was the best superstar in the last decade, or what the best whatever was in any of those categories in the last decade. For as little effort as they put into this show, it amazes that it could have been even better with even less overall effort.

Just my opinion, of course, but Eddie B (and those few others who have echoed his words) nailed my thoughts exactly on Raw's tenth anniversary show. You would think it would be impossible to screw up a ten-year retrospective on a hit television show. Show the highlights, share a few anecdotes, reminisce about the past. Yet screw it up they did, just as they have so many other golden opportunities over the past couple of years. Look at the WCW Invasion angle. Or, for that matter, look at The World. Alessandro provided a link to a review of WWE's restaurant in Times Square; consider this excerpt from that review:

It's a great place to go and a wonderful wrestling experience if you're there on a night usually devoted to wrestling. For the rest of the week, well, it pretty much sucks and I'm shocked that the WWF wouldn't use the opportunity they have to do more than promote themselves as a worldwide entity and to get a few Kodak moments on their television programs. It's like they don't give a crap....emphasis mine - db

When you read that, don't you feel as if you could apply that sentiment to almost everything WWE is doing these days? So much could be so improved with just a little more effort. Instead, it seems as if WWE is King Midas in reverse, taking golden opportunities and turning them into shit. Or, maybe the above reviewer is onto something; maybe the WWE just doesn't give a crap.

Well, it looks like WWE wasn't much kinder to the folks who came out for the show, either. It's pretty cheap that the World staff told the live crowd that Bret and Rock were there (ie, at the World) - probably to get a good hot crowd - and then have Rock only by pre-recorded "satellite" and Bret not be there at all. There seems no end to WWE's "give them anything, and they will come" philosophy.

P.S. I believe this is the first 100+ thread of 2003! Yay!

I'm seeing a lot of negative feelings here, and that Sunny picture who happens to look a lot more like Cloudy every day isn't helping matters. And seeing Triple H's ass isn't a good thing, or is it the other way around seeing that ass Triple H is not a good thing. Either way.

But remember this show wasn't all for not

It does not get better then that. Even god boy Shawn Michaels must be thinking unholy thoughts.

And YES greatest Icon ever, and I'm not talking about Shawn. Hope it fits/shows well

It's annoying how WWE thinks they are so "with it" now, when they are just as out of it as they ever were. You can almost hear Vince and his gargling laugh..."Haha, we know our early 90's bad gimmick-fest was absurd. Let's all laugh at it!"...and 10 years from now, when they have the dumbest WWE moments, it'll be full of stuff that Vince just loves right now, like HHH banging a corpse, Al Wilson, and A-Train.

I agree completely. Lets mock MOM now, but lets conveniently forget they had a tag title reign, as well as Mabel being a King of the Ring and main eventer at SummerSlam. And Tatanka, that gimmick was so bad we didn't have him job for over a year. IRS multi-time tag title holder who was around for a long time.
Funny, if they were going with bad gimmicks, why wasn't Blue Chipper Rocky Maivia included? That was a gimmick hated by the fans. And of course, Blackjack Bradshaw. But he's a hoss now and a lockerroom leader so we can't mock one of his gimmicks.

I never really had a like or dislike for Tajiri. Ever since the "new" look I always thought he was a poor man's Muta. Not as bad as that one guy they had in TNA. GL Tajiri with whatever comes your way.
