Now not to sound like an over the top RVD Mark but does it occur to anyone else how retarded it is to mute or turn down RVD crowds.
1)He's a face that wasn't created by the WWF machine
2)He's a face that gets a *gasp* REACTION (Unlike Edge, Tajiri, and Big Show....sadly for all really)
3)He's different. (That's "unorthodox" by god(see Regal,Tajiri, and Booker T)
4) He has no political friends in the business.
Yup....depush and kill his crowd reaction.

I don`t put a lot of stock in accusations of muting the crowd chants. If you`re live at the show, chants may sound louder to you than on TV. It`s hard to tell, and probably has happened, but not to the extent it`s suspected. This goes with that theory in the Billy Gunn thread, about something happening once and everyone following along.
I was at RAW on Monday and from the "live" perspective, thevolume of the "RVD" chants were only topped by the "What?" chants. (That is saying something, since the match was not his best).
yeah, i was at sd! in tacoma back in july. the chants at the time were pretty loud live but really didnt translate on tv really well...i really dont think there is any muting going on...

Had the same with Taz' debut in MSG. The crowd did a huge chant before he came out, but it didn't translate well on tv..
Just depends on where the mics are i guess. Heh...muting is better than faking the chants like WCW did. I once was at a Nitro, and from outta nowhere you heard a cheer. Obviously coming from the top of the building *grin* It silenced the crowd even more..

It's hard to guess why they'd undersell the RVD reaction - but I can't see why you'd be able to hear What as loudly as you can, and RVD so softly. Could they be planning to turn him nWo?

...you ever just read something and start yelling at an empty room?
The first i heard of the WWF muting RVD chants was after Smackdown a week ago. I forget which site i read the report on though, but basically the guy said the RVD chants were long and loud, and he didnt hear them on t.v. Well, last week on Smackdown RVD squashed Regal in a 42 second match. I don't have it on tape but i remember the crowd being pretty into the entire time, as RVD was hitting all his highspots rather quickly. I mean, how loud and long can a chant be if the match is less than a minute and is all offense for the face? So i don't really buy into the muting at all.
Ohio State's mens basketball team is 17-3 as of 1/30/01. I am a happy man. And Michigan sucks.
For all it matters, I was at a Smackdown taping in Montreal a few months ago. If you remember, there was a shot a Vince coming out of his limo and we started a "We Want Bret" chant that never got on TV. I wonder why. And a little later in the show, some people started a "Vince screwed Bret" but that was during a commercial break.
I don't think there's anything sinister at work here.
In the case of Smackdown, it could have been that they had to re-do the announcing of that segement, and didn't bother to find background audio of the RVD chant. I know that on Jakked lots of matches have "reconstructed" audio, because the announcers are talking about things that "happened on Smackdown!", which hadn't actually been taped yet.
Or, in the case of RAW, it could just be the mic placement.
I'm wondering if the "What!" chants might be sweetened a bit.
And on the subject, don't you think the State of the Union address would have been better if the crowd had just yelled "What?", instead of giving Dubya all those standing ovations?
I can understand the idea about having to redo the audio, but this is the third or fourth time that this issue has been raised. The first time I remember hearing it was when he was with the Alliance, and all the live spoilers said the crowd was chanting RVD when he went against the Rock in a tag match, and then on the show proper you couldn't hear a damn thing. I personally just think the WWF doesn't want people seeming to get a bigger reaction then their place in the hierarchy dictates. How silly would it seem if RVD came out to the second/third biggest response in the company, while the Undertaker performs to the dulcet tones of 1000 crickets?
I was at a show in Nashville one time, I think it was Smackdown, and Bob Holly was the first recognizable wrestler to come out. Man that pop was huge, and since it was my first non house show i was marking out too. Next time they came back Billy Gunn was the first one out. I didn't really participate in that pop.
And thanks for letting me know the Buckeyes record BobHolly. I have made the correction. At least you didn't overlook my main point. Michigan sucks.

The Undertaker's pop is still huge. Didn't you get the Smark memo requiring 'net writers to point out the best way to stop the Undertaker from getting a giant face reaction is to change his entrance music? The people pop big for that, my friend. They go the ape-$hit for it.

from spf2119: "I personally just think the WWF doesn't want people seeming to get a bigger reaction then their place in the hierarchy dictates." DUDE!!! That is EXACTLY what I feel. I've said it before, "The WWF will NEVER let someone get over all by themselves. They will usually drop them down to curtain jerking, and lots of Heat and Jakked matches(See: Tazz, Raven, Angle, etc...and to a lesser degree Jericho and Benoit), UNTIL the WWF decides to do an organized push, and possible elevation AFTER that(Jericho, Angle, Benoit, Edge, etc...)" Yes, it's corporate, and political, but what do you expect from a publicly traded company?
From a pwtorch report on a radio interview with Scott Hudson:
Hudson suggested that Rob Van Dam might be in for a heel turn, therefore explaining the WWF's recent editing to tone down "RVD" chants. If not that, it could be what Joe Pedicino once told Hudson is the WWF theory -- they like to push a guy to the top, bring him back down so it appears a star is working the mid-card matches, and then later, it won't take much to push him back up. He paid Van Dam the ultimate compliment by suggesting he is probably the only guy over for his in-ring work.
Im sorry, I refuse to buy into any of this conspiracy theory crap.
#1 What is gained by "muting" a guys chant? Nothing, thats why I dont believe it happens. Theres no point in muting a guys chant to keep him down. RVD is already over, and just because you mute his chant for TV that doesnt keep him down. The WWF isnt totally dumb. They know what they have with RVD, theyre not keeping him down. But hes not totally main event material yet. His mic work has to catch up with his ring work, and until that happens hes not a main eventer.
#2 If the WWF "muted" chants that they didnt like, why do they let all the "asshole" and "stephanie swallows" chants to go on? For that matter, they could kill the "WHAT" chant.
Theres no need to get worked into a frenzy about why chants dont tranlate well on TV. its live television done in an arena. Lots of forces are at work to keep it enjoyable for the fans at home and the ones at the arena. So maybe the sound guy turns down the crowd to make sure you (the crowd at home) can hear JR and King talking during a match. Thats just good TV, thats not a conspiracy.
The WWF has and does mute various chants, I know that for sure. I was at the Smackdown where Undertaker attacked RVD and lay down to have a little "heart-to-heart" with him, and he got "WHAT"ed just as much as Kurt Angle did... matter of fact, he even stopped his speech to tell the crowd not to piss him off. NONE of that made it to the show, not even a stray "WHAT".

Don't the taped shows get higher ratings? I think I had heard that somewhere when they did a couple live Smackdowns (I think it was a year or two ago though, I'm trying to remember something Meltzer said on that e-yada show).
