A few covers I think would be good listening that haven't been mentioned yet...

Foo Fighters - Have a Cigar (Pink Floyd)
Hootie and the Blowfish - Hey Hey What Can I Do (Led Zeppelin)
Molly Hatchet - Dreams I'll Never See (Allman Brothers)
Offspring - Why Don't You Get a Job (Beatles, remixed version of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da)
Queensryche - Closer to the Heart (Rush, live cover, may have to search online)
Stevie Ray Vaughn - covers many different tunes by Jimi Hendrix

"Alright, now I'd like to show you one of my favorite cartoons. It's a sad, depressing story about a pathetic coyote who spends every waking moment of his life in the futile pursuit of a sadistic roadrunner, who mocks him and laughs at him as he is repeatedly crushed and maimed. I hope you enjoy it!"

Any of Tori Amos' covers. She did an entire album of them, actually. I recommend "Real Men", originally by Tom Waits. And her cover of Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat".

The Cardigans do a cover of "Iron Man".

Bi-god 20 does an awesome "Like a Prayer".

On the latest Nettwerk compilation "For the Kids", Sarah McLachlan sings "Rainbow Connection". Awesome.

Worst cover? Josh Groban singing "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)". Way to take the pussiest song of Don McLean and make it even MORE pussy, Josh.

Spiraling_Shape: I think I found it on Kazaa, if I remember right, but it also might have been on WinMX. I'd just do a search for it--Rhett Miller and "I Wanna Be Sedated." If you don't find it, I'm sorry, but maybe we could work out a way for me to get it to you.

And, all of you who mentioned the Foo Fighters did my heart proud--I can't believe I forgot about them. But, we're ALL forgetting their best and greatest cover:

CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON!!!!!

They should push Batista as the RAW monster and have D-VON DUDLEY beat Brock Lesnar and become the Smackdown monster and have a big payoff fight on PPV.

Those two are the future of pro-wrestling.

This is why I like boards like this--everyone's got their own opinion, and no one belittles it.

Actually, "Real Men" is Joe Jackson. The Tom Waits cover is "Time", which if memory serves was originally on 'Rain Dogs'.

And Tori added nothing to that one, IMODO.

"Time" I will grant you was one of the weakest covers that she did. "Real Men" however is incredibly poignant, especially when she does it live. I saw her do that song live a month after 9/11, and it moved me very deeply.

May all of you have a blessed solstice.

Re: Matthew Sweet doing "Scooby Doo":

Sponge had a halfway decent cover of the Speed Racer theme, and Reverend Horton Heat did "Stop that Pigeon" and some other song in a medley. But by far, Dig's version of the Fat Albert theme was the best on the CD.

And I also found a comp of indie punk bands covering TV themes... H2O had an acceptable version of the Cops theme, but other than that, it's... eh.

Cover songs are cool especially when you have no idea they were someone elses until someone brings it up. Real smart group you guys are I thought I had some killer originals and you beat me to it. Some that hasn't been mentioned

Fugees- Killing me Softly(Roberta Flack), Beautifully done, great video as well

Aimee Mann- One[is the loneliest number](Three Dogs Night), From Magnolia, with her beautiful voice it's such a great song.

Reel Big Fish- Take on Me (A-Ha), surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet

Crash Test Dummies- Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead(XTC), One of my favourite songs. Adn the Girl from the band sings it. She should sing more often

Hole- GoldDust Woman (Fleetwood Mac), Wasn't bad

Nirvana- The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie) One of my favourite Nirvana songs

Alien Ant Farm- Smoothe Criminal (Michael Jackson), Hate the band but love this cover.

Dope- You Spin Me right round [Like a Record baby] (Dead or Alive), It's such a fun song any cover would do well.

Some of my favourites that's been mentioned

LemonHeads- Mrs.Robinson (Simon and Garfunkel). First time I heard them sing this I became an automatic fan

Snake River Conspiracy- How soon is now?(The Smiths), Some found this being sacrilege, I liked it. They took such a depression song and put cutesie sound effects and a somewhat happy girl and for some reason I enjoyed it for it's insane aspect.

Pearl Jam - Last Kiss (Wayne Cochran) Eddie sounded great

As for worst Madonna's version of a classic like American Pie made me ill. The worst butchered cover ever.

Oops, in the words of Kurt Angle:as they say on the streets, "my bad". I was a little stoned when I posted, forgive me.

It's still an awesome song though, best on that album, I think.

What I want to know is what the hell happened to Simple Minds? Based on the two covers I've heard of theirs, which is the extent of their newest material. They turn the following songs into almost generic dance-pop (especially the first one):

* Joy Division: "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (on Neon Lights
* Erasure: "The Floating World" (on Cry)

Although now that I think about it, I kinda wish I covered "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Ah well, something to do once I get my modest recording setup, well, set up.

"Do Ya" wasn't an Ace Frehely song. He covered it, too. It was an ELO song, and actually, a pseudo-cover then, since they originally wrote and recorded it (a lot heavier, with the "train-a-comin"' bit at the end) as The Move. Speaking of them, I've never heard the original version, but The Move's live version of "Sunshine Help Me" (Spooky Tooth) is/was awesome.

As for Matthew Sweet, I liked his cover of "Burning Airlines Give You So Much More" (Eno) and his "Photograph" (Def Leppard) is fun.

My apologies about "Do Ya." I looked up the lyrics on Google and the only hits I got were on an Ace Frehley fan site.

I can't believe I forgot Sweet's cover of "Justify My Love."

IIRC, the other song in the medley with "Stop That Pigeon" is the theme song to "Jonny Quest." I love that Jonny Quest theme song. So very dramatic.

Hah, no that is the most infamously mislabelled song in the short history of internet song-sharing. My friend told me he was searching for it once and found it labelled as being done by "Not-Phish." I believe it`s a band called the Gourds?

Jawbox did a great rock cover of "Cornflake Girl" as the hidden track on their self-titled album.

For sheer weirdness, try 10,000 Mona Lisas' version of Alanis' "You Oughta Know".

Also, I've heard a radio in-studio of Carbon Leaf doing Ozzy's "Crazy Train" that is awesome.

Woah, woah, woah. Where can I find that song? That would be cool to hear.

Edited- Of course I know the difference between here and hear, why do you ask?

I found it on KaZaA (lite, of course). It's really short (1:01, 976896 bytes).

Lyrics:

Link, he come to town
Come to save the princess Zelda
Ganon took her away
Now the children don't play
But they will when Link saves the day
Hallelujah

Now, Link, fill up your hearts
So you can shoot your sword with power
And when you're feeling all down
The fairy will come around
So you be brave, and not a sissy coward

Now Link has saved the day
Put Ganon in his grave
So now Zelda is free
And now a hero shall be
Link, I think your name shall go down into history

(edited to add lyrics)
