Two words:

Ogre Battle.

-Jag

With poison running through your veins, and death marching solemnly towards you, heroic acts become more of a necessity as you see your time dwindling.

Vanquishing your enemies, making amends to those you have wronged, and leaving words of love and kindness for those around you become second nature as your own mortality looms

However, true strength lies not in these last desperate acts, but in the actions of one who has to get out of bed the next day and face the consequences of doing that which you believe is right.

Apparently FF VII doesn't get a lot of love from other wieners, but I thought it was awesome.

1. Earthbound (SNES) [Ness from Super Smash Bros.]
2. Final Fantasy VII (PS1) [CHOCOBOS!]
3. Final Fantasy III (SNES) [The aria is one of my favorite songs ever]

Apparently, Zelda games aren't RPGs or something, or else they'd be on the list, too. They ALL rock.

(Admittedly, I haven't played a lot of the games you guys mentioned, but I guess the allure just wasn't there)

Sorry... did you just call us newbies? Not to pull age rank, but that's pretty ballsy for a guy born in 1983. I remember buying the first Final Fantasy when you were a ripe old 7 years old, so step off.

(edited by asteroidboy on 18.12.02 1449)

No kidding. I bought Final Fantasy 1 when it first came out in the US for the NES. Since then I've played every single Final Fanrasy game, including Mystic Quest (ugh...), Tactics and all four Gameboy FFs. So maybe you shouldn't talk a bunch of shit when you don't actually know the people you're talking to?

My ideal RPG would be a lot different from what I'm used to getting fed. No "six teenagers save the world" bullshit. I'm SO sick of running a party made up of punk-ass, whiny kids- FFX was exemplary in this respect. I loathed Tidus more than any other video game character in recent memory. What especially got under my skin was that he couldn't even hold his damn sword in the beginning of the game, and then at the end they're jocking him as the best guardian ever? This kid, over the period of a month, surpasses a bad motherfucker like Auron who's been fucking shit up forever? That kind of crap really bothers me. My favorite part of FFVI was that most of the characters were certified badasses, and there were very few "teen heroes" in the bunch. Cyan was a credible hero because he had been a hardass knight forever and a day, and he knew what the hell he was doing when asses needed to be kicked.

To me, Final Fantasy is about a small group of bad motherfuckers that are tough enough, dedicated enough and honorable enough to put their asses on the line to save the world. FFVI is excellent in this respect. FFVIII, while falling back on teens to make the party, at least made them credible hardasses- they were elite special forces and that made sense. I just want people that are believable badasses to take on the endless hordes of evil. A fucking teen sports hero doesn't cut the mustard with me. Cyan, Cecil, Squall, Auron- bad motherfuckers. Tidus, Rinoa, Rikku- should be getting shredded by the first nasty to come along.

My ideal RPG... well, mix and match elements from any number of my favourites, and there you go.

FFVI is still my favorite, just because it felt like far and away the most epic of the games I've played. All the others can claim that the fate of the world is at stake, but this one actually means it. (I suppose spoilers follow, but this game is over a decade old and you shouldn't need any warnings...but just in case someone hasn't played it and has been inspired by this thread to track it down...)

Kefka is definitely the best of the villains in the games I've played (well, role-playing game and Final Fantasy villains, nobody beats Hitler's Brain from Bionic Commando). I think someone above said he had no depth, but I'd disagree. The clown attire and his early appearances at Edgar's castle are just part of the show and he turns into a much different person later in the game, once he's achieved his initial goals. That's right, every other villain can claim to want to rule or destroy the world, but he actually does it. Halfway through the game, no less. That was as awesome a moment in a video game as I've seen, when you play the game right and it results in your rag-tag group not only failing, but getting the world destroyed and having everyone flung across the globe and driven to near suicide. That's some top-shelf badassery right there.

In the first half of the game, Kefka is perfect as a power-hungry lunatic. The siege on Doma where he poisons the entire castle, kids and all, and says the line about how there's nothing he loves more than the screams of the dying...getting locked up by the Empire when they appear to see the light...killing General Leo (damn you!) after he's become part of your party for the only time in the game...pulling the fast one on the Emperor and kicking him to his death. All great. But once he gets his power and becomes what amounts to a god in wrecking the Earth and making all of humanity live in fear of his "Light of Judgement", he has nothing left to do and he takes that turn towards nihilism. Essentially, there's no one left to oppose him and no goal for him because he's already stopped the only people who can be a threat, so he sits in his tower and sees only nothingness. Alexander wept and all that. And that's when you reassemble your badass party, grab the world's toughest mime and kick his clown ass. Clown vs. mime might be a draw, but clown vs. mime, world's strongest fighter, ninja and guy with a chainsaw is a blowout every time. Never mess with a group where the sane one carries the chainsaw.

Plus, he had the awesome laugh and the best theme in the series, even better than Golbez' pretty awesome organ theme from IV. Shadow's Ennio Morricone music gave it a close run, though. Overall, the music from VI is another reason I loved the game. Everyone having a personal theme that tied into the finale suite was terrific. Also, VI is the only Final Fantasy Game (that I'm aware of) to have the sadly forgotten two-player option. What ever happened to that?

For the coolest single moment in the series, though, I'd have to go back to FFIV and give it to the end of about the first half of the game, when Cecil (still dressed in his cool armor before he started letting Rosa do his hair) and his group have been beaten clear across the world and are forced to hole up in Toroia (I think that's the name, it's been a long time) where the - as far as you know at the time - last crystal is held. And that's when his former trusted ally Kain shows up with Cecil's Red Wing flag ship (salt on the wound) and forces him to hand over the last crystal. Even in 8-bit graphics, the mid-air showdown on the planks between the two of them on their respective air ships was fantastic.

For later stuff, the faux-recreation of the Flash Gordon wedding, complete with the airship raid right in the middle, in FFX was really cool. If only Seymour had put together vows as cool as Ming the Merciless. Kefka would have.

Very good points, but I think it depends a lot on your maturity level.
When I played FF3 (US) I was very young and let me tell you, it DEPRESSED the hell out of me when the world was destroyed. It just made me want to throw away the game and not play anymore.
Had it happened when I was a cynical teenager, I would have loved it, but it just amounted to a bunch of drudgery at the time. The world is all brown and burned looking, everyone is crying or nuts and a troop of crackheads is marching around Kefka's tower. It was just too dark for me at the time, especially after beating the fairly lighthearted FF2.

Kefka sucks, I think. He may be crazy and actually succeed in some bad stuff, but he's still a shrimpy dork in a clown outfit with a stupid laugh.

Best moment from FF2: when Cid straps a bomb to himself and dives off the airship to seal the hole and prevent the Red Wings from coming through. SACRIFICE~!

And I love FUSOYA.

Wow, someone actually mentions EarthBound!

I'm not entirely sure where I stand on EB... it was fun to play, but there's not much replay value in it. Also, it was kind of annoying whenever there were more than 4 or 5 people (non-party) on-screen and the game would start running slower. It was still fun, though.

FFVI was - is - a great game. I'm not going to dispute anybody's inclusion of this game on their list. Same basic story with FFVII.

However, to say Kefka is the greatest villian because he destroyed the world once?

Chrono Trigger.. Lavos destroys the world not once, but twice! However, I thought Queen Zeal was a better "pure evil" character as opposed to Lavos; however, Square did a spectacular job of building it up as a legitimate opposition with complete malice. Combined, they're just awesome villians.

Ogre Battle is fun.. haven't finished it yet, though. (Only got the ROM recently.) Vampires are just abusive early-level... (yes, I somehow managed to get a vampire in the SECOND MISSION. Wrong.)

I got Legaia 2 for Xmas.

So far, I've fought an eight-foot gorilla that hit me with a Goldust-style butt-butt and mocked me before I killed it, then got my ass whupped by a fat little girl in a Heidi costume and her overly-feminine brother, each of whom had mystical powers that I couldn't contend with. I found myself chained to a wall in a crucifix pose and beaten senseless by a musclehead human (in the aforementioned siblings' employ), who complains strenuously when they won't let him kill me, because the gorilla wasn't just his pet; they were bound by the bonds of TRUE LOVE, y'see.

This is in the first two hours of the game. Any game that can get this surreal this quickly has my stamp of approval.

I don't play a lot of RPGs, but Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for Super Nintendo and Legend of Zelda: Ocorana of Time (if that even is and RPG, I'm not really sure) for 64 are probably my two favorite games ever.

Ah, Nethack. Rogue begat two major ASCII-text series of games -- there's the Hack tree (Rogue -> Hack -> Nethack) and the Moria tree (Rogue -> Moria -> Angband -> *angband). Of the two, I'm more partial to the latter, but both are worthy successors in the random-dungeon genre.

have you played MAngband or is *Angband the new name for it? i hear it's a Multiplayer Angband...

i've never tryed it, as i'm very partial to NH...never ascended yet, because i'm partial to Wizards and suck with them. I get farther with Val, Monks, Preists, and Arch's more than any other class...

Just to reiterate an opinion voiced way back in this thread: There are damn few RPGs for the Dreamcast out there, but both Skies of Arcadia and Grandia 2 rock hard. If you have any access to a Dreamcast and any interest in RPGs, you Must try SoA at least. You'll thank me.

Regarding PC RPGs, I'm surprised that no one seems to have given props so far to Planescape: Torment, which may be a few years long in the tooth but is still a terrific game (although the fact that I ran a long Planescape campaign in pencil-n-paper AD&D probably affects my judgment there). And how about the Fallouts? And if you want to get seriously old skool, nothing, but nothing, ever touched the greatness that was Wasteland.

I'm currently playing my way through FFX and enjoying the hell out of it, aside from the too-frequent cutscenes and lack of strategy in most of the battles so far.

You should pick up AT LEAST the first Breath of Fire. I enjoyed the first Wild Arms game too. If your looking for something incredibally unique and cheap pick up Planscape Torment. I got it and Soulbringer at Wal-Mart for $10. It's more than worth it.

Was it good for you too?
