According to ESPN.com, this is entirely possible in the AFC this year.

I think it's safe to say at least one of the wild-card teams will finish 9-7. Plus, the Ravens will(hopefully) win the AFC North at 9-7 once Pittsburgh blow up here in the last two weeks.

This is why running up the score is a necessity in the NFL. It is tie-breaker #11, between which city has nicer weather and the ever important 'If Paul Tagliabue was an alien, what planet would he be from' tiebreakers.

You know someone's going to get screwed by the coin flip this year. So you just played an exaustive NFL season and it gets decided by heads/tails. There's got to be a better way.

Well, the coin toss is like the 11th or 12th tiebreaker, so I really can't see someone getting screwed on that. I'm sure net touchdowns would come into play before we got to that stage...

If it comes down to the coin toss can we start saying the NFL needs the BCS?

Tie Breaking from nfl.com

TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION
If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.

Two Clubs
1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in common games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.

Three or More Clubs
(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated during any step, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of the two-club format).
1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the clubs).

DDP: Well, there's this little passage I got memorized, Diamond Dallas 25:17. Sort of fits this occasion:

"The path of the bookerman is beset on all sides by the inequities of the talented, and the tyranny of workrate freaks. Blessed is he, who in the name of tradition and sports entertainment carries the stiffs through the matches of Nitro, for he is truly the workrate's keeper, and the finder of lost quality. And I will lay the smack down upon thee with great vengeance and furious roid rage those who attempt to outwrestle and expose my brothers. And you will know my name as the Bookerman, when I lay my catchphrase upon thee!"

And can you imagine watching ESPN that night waiting for them to try to sort out that mess if it happens? It's going ot be hard enough to keep track of what will happen, much less this scenario.

There is. It's called winning enough games that you're not stuck in this situation. These are professional sports teams staffed with professional athletes. Their job is to win. Period. Every team's fate is in its own hands, from management to players to support staff. Every team has an equal opportunity (or as close to equal as the league's been able to legislate) at the start of the season.

The NFL right now is the best professional sports I've seen since the early 80s NHL when the game was wide open and it seemed that anyone could win any given game. I personally would rather see teams mucking it out for playoff spots than free and clear by week 12. I like a little excitement in my regular season.

Actually, I said that. First, note the SARCASM. The coin flip is like the twentieth tiebreaker. It hasn't been used since 1978 or something. You don't get out of your shell enough and when you do, you come off negative as hell.

Note the SARCASM? How exactly am I supposed to note it given that it's not indicated in any way by the flat word on the page? Or am I in dire need of this?

Admittedly, I didn't realize that a coin flip was waaaay down the line of tie-breakers, but at the same time, your comment was similar to both bellyaching last year about the Western conference in the NHL being "too close" and similar current bellyaching about the AFC. Judging by other posts in this thread, I was not the only one who took you at least somewhat seriously. (Mind you, the other guy was Canadian too...)

But thanks for telling me what my "problem" is. Without you, I might have carried on in the vast delusion that I'm a positive and optimistic soul. Now I know I'm shrewish and vilely pessimistic. Out of curiosity, do you find the unsolicited "Your problem is..." technique useful in real life, or do you just use it on the Internet?

We could have a Paper/Scissor/Stones contest between the tied teams. Or televised twister involving the clubs cheerleaders....

The reason I responded like that to you is that I don't buy into your argument at all.

"It's called winning enough games that you're not stuck in this situation."

Granted there are still two games left. If somehow the situation does turn out to be an eleven team tie than all those teams would have the same win/loss record. So none of them would have won enough games not to be stuck in a shitty situation.

By the way. I didn't intend to upset you with the comment of being a hermit and pessimistic. You have great views on sports and wrestling and I just wish you would post more often in a kinder fashion without trying to give a lecture. And that is not sarcasm.

If there's still a possibility of an 11-way tie (heck, at this point, I'd say an 8-way tie or something similiar), then we can start having some fun. See how it balances out after the first week.

The likelihood of even a six-way tie will probably be remote after Sunday(the Monday night game won't affect those 11 teams)

If Pittsburgh/Tampa ends in a tie, and the belief that a tie=1/2 a win-1/2 a loss, then things could really go into crazy directions.

You're right because if they tied Tampa and lost to the Ravens they would wind up at 8-6-2 and effectively 9-7. They couldn't win the division if that happened, but who knows how the wild-card would sort out.

God I hope it doesn't come down to tiebreakers for teams getting in. To sort out the teams that get in doesn't bother me because if they get in the cream can rise to the top.

Actually, they could win the division, if the Ravens lose to Cleveland, and the Browns lose to the Falcons.
The way this season is going, I wouldn't be shocked if the Texans knocked out the Titans the last week of the season in Houston. You know the old Oiler fans would love to see Bud's team knocked out in Houston.

Of course, between the 1975-76 and 1989-1990 seasons, a time period that the early 80's were smack dab in the middle of, exactly one Stanley Cup was won by a team that wasn't Montreal, Edmonton or the Islanders... which was Calgary in 1988-1989, who beat Montreal in the finals.

Not exactly a persuasive argument for parity.

All of this reminds me too much of the funny scene in "BASEketball" when Dan Patrick and Kenny Mayne try to sort out the tiebreakers for the Baseketball division.

I don't think he means parity, per se...rather that the game itself was wide open, firewagon hockey.

You were more likely to see a 7-6 game than the ultra-exciting 1-1 games we get today. You were more likely to see Gretzky put up 212 points in a year as opposed to Iginla's league-leading 96.
