In NCAA Hockey I believe they recently joined the CCHA and in Lacrosse I think they are still an independent since the Big East does not have Lax. As for their baseball affiliation, who cares.
As an at-large team with a big fan base that spends $$$'s wherever they go, ND always gets consideration from the secondary bowl games.
ESPN.com has my back on that: " Notre Dame, an independent in football but a Big East member in nearly every other sport, was added to the league's portion of the BCS mix after the 1997 season, when the league went 0-4 in bowl games. Miami was ineligible because of probation that year."
DDP: Well, there's this little passage I got memorized, Diamond Dallas 25:17. Sort of fits this occasion:
"The path of the bookerman is beset on all sides by the inequities of the talented, and the tyranny of workrate freaks. Blessed is he, who in the name of tradition and sports entertainment carries the stiffs through the matches of Nitro, for he is truly the workrate's keeper, and the finder of lost quality. And I will lay the smack down upon thee with great vengeance and furious roid rage those who attempt to outwrestle and expose my brothers. And you will know my name as the Bookerman, when I lay my catchphrase upon thee!"
West Virginia coach should have made sure his team wasn't taken to the woodshed by Wisconsin if he's so concerned about bowl placement, or stopped Miami in the 4th quarter of a 1 point game if he really wanted a BCS game.
I want you to know, I agree with everything I've just said.
Just more whining from a coach. The time to complain about this was before the agreement was made. It's too late now.
Also, if the bowl agreement with the Big East is like most, these bowls get 1st choice, 2nd choice, etc., they don't have to take the 1st best team, 2nd best team, etc. So if it makes him feel better, Notre Dame would be selected for the Gator Bowl, regardless of whether or not they finished ahead of them in second (though I have to believe they would beat WV anyway).
the problem with ND is that they are guarenteed a bowl. If they don't get picked by the Gator Bowl, then the insight.com bowl takes them if my memory serves me.
the offical bowl sch. would say Gator bowl, Notre Dame (or Big East #2), and insight.com said Big East #3 (or Notre Dame)
that's what the WV coach is pissed. ND gets a good Big East bowl, but doesn't have to face the Big East conf sch. AND gets some special considerations for BCS selection.
He wants ND to join the conf or get out and give up all big east tie ins, bowls included

ND did go 2-1 in the Big East. And, they were a tri-champion of the Big Ten with a 3-0 Conference record.
I want you to know, I agree with everything I've just said.
that 2-1 in the big east didn't include going up against Miami or VT or WV...

Also, Notre Dame gets half the money from their bowl game, while any conference team has to split their cash with everyone else in their conference. But if the WV coach hates it so bad, he can get his team to leave the Big East and they can try to go it alone like Notre Dame has.
And there are other teams that are for all intents and purposes guaranteed a bowl. Wisconsin nearly always gets a bowl because they have such loyal fans.
*sigh* Congrats to the Steelers. Beautiful sight of the night was Fitzgerald blazing through everyone on the way to the end zone. Damn awesome. Sad that there was too much time left on the clock after that.
