She was one tough old "broad." She certainly said dumb things and was a center of controversy but loved the game very much. R.I.P.

She hadn't been "owner" since selling controlling interest back after the racism flap...

From the AP wire...

CINCINNATI -- Marge Schott, the tough-talking, chain-smoking owner of the Cincinnati Reds who won a World Series but was repeatedly suspended for offensive remarks, died Tuesday, a hospital spokeswoman said. She was 75.

Schott was hospitalized about three weeks ago for breathing difficulties, said Christ Hospital spokeswoman Dona Buckler. She did not release a cause of death.

Schott kept a low profile after she ended years of turmoil by selling her controlling interest in the club in October 1999. She appeared at news conferences when she made donations to the zoo and other local organizations.

She remained a limited partner in the team's ownership group, and sued owner Carl Lindner because she didn't like her seats in the new Great American Ball Park, where the Reds moved in 2003.

Her outspokenness as owner became her legacy and her downfall.

Schott had inherited and expanded her husband's business empire after he died in 1968. Until she took over the Reds in the mid-1980s, she was known as a car dealer who made campy television commercials featuring her beloved St. Bernards.

Once she got control of the front office, she became one of the most prominent figures in the history of baseball's first professional team.

The Reds won the 1990 World Series, sweeping the Oakland A's while Schott rubbed dog hair on manager Lou Piniella and his players.

Yeah, I'm weeping away right now.

"I respect Adolf Hitler"

"Dave Parker and Eric Davis are just a bunch of million dollar n*ggers"

"Hitler wasn't so bad at the beginning...he just went too far"

Ugh. Hope you like it warm, Marge.

I'll throw my hat in with those who are saying "RIP" to Ms. Schott.

She said a lot of things that weren't well thought out and she definitely wasn't PC, but I'm not sure that is enough to condemn her; I remember reading that she gave a lot back to the community. I would think that if she practiced good deeds that they should outweigh her stupid comments or at least even them out.

I always thought that she was energetic and enjoyed baseball. I also have always thought that she was never accepted because she was a she.

This will severely damage the yearly Martin Bormann telethon.

She was a racist moron. I don't care if she was a woman or a man or a dog, an idiot of that caliber should not have been allowed anywhere near a microphone. I don't care if she loved baseball or not. She was a black eye on baseball.

She was whack, but was into the game. It seemed her biggest problem was not thinking before she spoke, though. I remember when that umpire died on Opening Day and her first response was "I don't see why we had to stop play" (somewhere, Vince McMahon was agreeing).

Funniest Marge story, for me, was probably during the All-Star festivties in Texas, 1995. The heat was well over 100 and Marge was quoted with "it's so damn hot, I think I oughta' just take my top off!"

Click Here (twincities.com) The AP wire has some of Marge's famous or is it infamous quotes... Boy she says some stupid stuff.

"Well, I don't like it when they come here, honey, and stay so long and then outdo our kids. That's not right." - On Asian-Americans, in a 1996 interview.

"What did I win? Did I win another championship?" - Heading to the clubhouse after the Reds beat the Dodgers in the 1995 division series.

I wouldn't read too much hoopla into this; it's basically what they've been doing on and off for the last couple years anyway, similar to Wednesday night, and it's non-exclusive so the local teams will still have their broadcasts, unlike on Sundays when i...
