Hi gamers. I finally have a functional N64, after buying an old console from a video store for $20, then replacing the RF cord. Now, I need some games. I already plan on getting Mario 64 and Goldeneye (if I can find it). I saw a used copy of WWF Attitude. Is it any good? Are there any overlooked gems that I should be on the lookout for? I'll be on the hunt at the pawn shops this weekend, just want to go in armed with some info! Thanks!
Are you ready for Mahkan-mania to run wild all over you?
No. It was awesome at the time, but WWF Attitude is terrible in retrospect. All the moves are performed in the "Push left, left, left, C-UP" method, which is a real pain in the ass. Look for No Mercy - I still play that one.
Overlooked gems? It's hard to say, but if it's got Nintendo or Rare's name on it, it's a pretty safe bet. And Zelda 64 is still the best damn game for the system and just as good as the day it was released.

Mario 64, Mario Cart 64, Mario Tennis, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Ogre Battle 64, Super Smash Bros., Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Those first 9 are must haves for me. Here are some other's I'd probably pick up too:
Mario Golf, Battletanx: Global Assualt, Turok: Rage Wars, Gauntlet Legends, Gex: Enter the Gecko, Kirby 64, Blitz 2001, Paper Mario, Rainbow Six, and Donkey Kong 64
As for wrestling games, there are only 3:
WCW/NWO Revenge WWF Wrestlemania 2000 WWF No Mercy <- last and best of the series

edit/ added DK64... hmmm... what am I missing?
(edited by Jaguar on 6.11.02 1611) With poison running through your veins, and death marching solemnly towards you, heroic acts become more of a necessity as you see your time dwindling.
Vanquishing your enemies, making amends to those you have wronged, and leaving words of love and kindness for those around you become second nature as your own mortality looms
However, true strength lies not in these last desperate acts, but in the actions of one who has to get out of bed the next day and face the consequences of doing that which you believe is right.
Totally Donkey Kong 64... that one was great. I also liked the Command and Conquer that they came out with for the 64. And Rogue Squadron is pretty damned good. If you want a wrestling game, go with WCW/NWO Revenge. Awesome game... Kirby 64? You are not talking about that damned one with the crystals, are you? That one was so bad... I never even finished it... The Zeldas are great, especially the second one. Oh, and make sure you have the newer memory pack so you can play Ocarnia of Time, and get the better graphics on Rogue Squadron....

Honestly, the only N64 game that piqued my interest was Mischief Makers, and that only because it was by Treasure. If Treasure's made a bad game yet, I don't know what it is.
Between the debut of the Atari 2600 and the death of the Sega Dreamcast, there are only three major systems that I haven't owned at one time or another -- the Neo-Geo (too expensive), the Lynx (couldn't find games for it on the used market) and the N64. There's a reason for the last one.

I'm going to go out on an limb here, and suggest the reason is that you don't like Multiplayer Goodness.
Which btw, is what most of the games I mentioned are designed for. So if you don't have 3 other friends, you may not be getting your money's worth on some of those titles. (Rage Wars for instance)

Avoid any WCW game made by Electronic Arts. Mayhem and Backstage Assault are hideous.
That and I have to make an ammendment to my "anything by Nintendo or Rare" blanket statement from above - if you ever wanted to know what would happen if Nintendo shit out a franchise title, play "Yoshi's Story" sometime. Short, boring and totally forgotten.

Hunt down Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 (VPW2). This is (IMO) the best of the series. It's an import, but well worth trying to find (check eBay, or here).
Matthew: You would've loved it, David. A week in a foreign country, strange people, strange customs... Dave: Oh, I know what you mean. I've been to Canada.
I have 28 games for N64. Of the ones I have, I highly recommend the following titles:
Super Mario 64 Mario Tennis Mario Kart 64 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Banjo-Kazooie Banjo-Tooie Perfect Dark GoldenEye 007 WWF No Mercy WWF WrestleMania 2000 WCW/nWo Revenge NBA Courtside 2 Featuring Kobe Bryant Monopoly
And I highly recommend you avoid the following titles (avoid like the plague, that is):
WCW Nitro WCW Mayhem (and for that matter, Backstage Assault, even though I only have it for PSX) WWF War Zone WWF Attitude NBA Live '99 (and for that matter, NBA Live 2000, which I thankfully rented before buying-- and didn't buy.)
I still get some playability out of these titles:
Knockout Kings 2000 Rampage World Tour (more fun with two players!) Mortal Kombat Trilogy (when I get in that sort of mood) Triple Play 2000
And the remaining ones I have, I very rarely play.
Of course, now that I have Vice City, my N64 is probably going to gather some more dust for the time being. But I still love it to death!!!

And Rare did make that shit game where you were the little kids and the dog exploring worlds for N64... forget the name, but man did it suck.

I'm not sure I have three friends who'd want to play those specific games. When we want to go multiplayer, we break out Fire Pro Wrestling (Saturn, PSX, Dreamcast), Quake 3/Unreal Tournament (Dreamcast), Duke Nukem (Saturn, Netlinked back in the day), Twisted Metal 2 (PSX), Poy Poy (PSX), and others. More often than not, our multiplayer experience is one-or-two-player games with the others heckling those playing and switching with whoever loses.
The closest thing to a brightly-colored happy N64 4-player game I have is Toy Commander on the DC, and that lasted about twenty minutes before we said "screw it" and put Fire Pro D back in.

Do yourself a favor and skip KI Gold. Buy me a copy of Goldeneye instead. And like they've said before, Mario Kart 64 rocks the ass, as do OoT and WM2K.
I was always partial to Rush 2:Extreme Racing just for the sheer ease of play. Not a lot of depth to it, but it was quick to get going if you wanted to play a driving game.
I'll agree with you and the rest the Superman game sucked hard.
Good luck with the new/old system, we just bought one for our daughter for about $20 and stocked it up with the Mario Party games which she loves.
My collection of N-64 titles are more quality over quantity....but I can honestly say you'll do no wrong with them.
Mario Kart 64: Underrated singleplayer, FANTASTIC multiplayer. Zelda 64 (the first one): You needed this game YESTERDAY it's that awesome. Mario 64: Get this game ASAP. GoldenEye: Excellent multi-player shooter, lots of stuff to unlock. Madden 2000: Best football game for the system IMHO. Paper Mario: Plays like Mario RPG, and it's just as fun.
I hear the Mario Party games are good too....

Okay, I got Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time, WCW/NWO Revenge and Pokemon Stadium last weekend! But now I need a new controller, since the analog stick on mine is worn out. I push it forward and only get walk instead of run. Other than that, I have lots of N64 goodness!
