Damn you Freeway! You and your scarily prescient "Cold Mountain will get jobbed" sentiment! I'm uber-shocked at Law being the lead to get the nod over Kidman, seeing as he's the weak link of the two, and Seabiscuit STILL has no business being anywhere near a Best Picture slate. And no Props for Johansson? Boo. Apart from that, everything's rosy. I'm particularly over-the-moon about the surprise love for City Of God and In America, two movies that I was dead-certain were going to get overlooked. Plus DEPP MADE THE CUT!! Oscar, you rule this year. Now don't fuck it up by giving the lame horse movie the big award.

Well at least my prediction of Tom Cruise not getting a nomination held up. Is this where a I get to say "NYAH!"? Anyway, even though I think Depp can act like a real idiot sometimes in public, I'm happy he finally got nominated because he was great in Pirates and he pretty much carried that movie on his back.

I wonder if the indie/art crowd is going to be pissed off this year. I mean look at it, most of the films that got the biggest nominations are big budget studio pictures. The only kind of quirky indie/art type film that got some major nominations was Lost In Translation...and I suppose Mystic River if you want to count that...but I'm not ;-).

For all the buzz around him, I'm still shocked that Johnny Depp got nominated for a comedic role in an action movie. Don't get me wrong - he carried that movie and totally deserves the nomination, I'm just suprised the Academy actually pulled the trigger on it. (I'm pulling for him or Bill Murray, although I'll have no problem with Sean Penn when he actually wins the thing.)

(On the same token, Uma Thurman should've snuck into the Best Actress category for "Kill Bill" - another movie carried by one performance. Oh well, there's always next year...)

And do you want to talk about getting jobbed? Where's "Big Fish"? Not only was that one of the best films I've seen in years (You're telling me that "Seabiscuit" was better? I highly doubt it.), not only was that the movie that Tim Burton should finally have gotten a Best Director nomination for, but seeing that Best Supporting Actor list without Albert Finney is just insulting.

Oh well. As long as they have the sense to give Best Picture to Lord of the Rings, even though everyone's been assuming it would win this year since 2001, I won't complain.

Renegade Raine says:

I am really happy/suprised to see that Keisha Castle-Hughes got nominated. YES! Love for Whale Rider! And I guess she's the youngest actress (at 13) to ever be nominated for Best Actress. Of course, I don't expect her to win (my guess is Theron), but it was still cool to see her getting nominated.

Also happy to see that Ken Watanabe got nominated, but again, I don't see him getting the award.

WHAT? No love for Chiaki Kuriyama? Okay, okay, I wasn't expecting to see her nominated (seeing as she doesn't speak English), but I still say she had the most memorable performance of all the supporting actresses the past year.

I hope Watanabe takes supporting actor, it was one of the best performances I've ever seen. Last Samurai got robbed, though. It totally should have gotten nominations for director (Zwick), cinematography (Toll), and original score (Zimmer).

PICTURE: No problems with the noms.
DIRECTOR: Big snub for Anthony Mighella (Cold Mt.) & Jim Sheridan (In America). Still, City of God got huge accolades from a lot of critics in the foreign film category...which it wasn't eligible for. So...we get this.
ACTOR: Eh, they're fine.
ACTRESS: Snub for Kidman surprising, but not really unexpected since she wasn't exactly staggeringly good in the film. Nom for Morton IS pretty surprising. Keisha Castle-Hughes being included is awesome, Evan Rachel Wood being excluded isn't...
SUPPORTING ACTOR: 6 guys (Peter Sarsgaard, Albert Finney, Chris Cooper, William H. Macy, Sean Astin & Dijmon Hounsou) had a shot at the fifth spot...and Hounsou got it, probably as a reward for a bunch of good performances.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: No Scarlett Johansson? No Maria Bello? No Hope Davis?
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Another Cold Mountain snub.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: The Station Agent probably could've snuck in...

Overall, not a bad group of nominees. A lot of snubs, but this was a pretty stacked year for nominee contenders.

The Last Samurai just didn't have the critical support to be a major contender. I think the problem with the movie is that it tries way too much to be "oscar worthy." But whatever.

Neither did Seabiscuit at the time-less so, in fact. Didn't stop it getting a main-event place, though. And hey, it tried FAR more to be "Oscar-worthy".

All I can really try to say about that is that Seabiscuit generally got better reviews and reception than The Last Samurai. It did better commercially and among general audiences as well. Also since Seabiscuit came out earlier in the year it gives more time for critics and others to take another look at films and possibly change their opinions like many did for Moulin Rouge which came out in the summer of 2001. The Last Samurai didn't have that going for it since it came out in December.

In conclusion though, I'm not really a big Seabiscuit fan either for that matter. I was just making a case why The Last Samurai didn't get any major award nods.

Dances with Samurai was not original enough.

Anyway, the whole indy film scene was very weak this year. There were some good films and performances but nothing really Oscar worthy.

I found it interesting that LOTR gets no actor nominations. It almost screams lock on picture and director but allows other films to get a piece of the action.

It'll get picture or director, but definitely not both.

Is anyone else suprised at the nomination for Master & Commander (as well as the Golden Globe nomination it got)? Las Samurai is a similarly big budget, trying to be an epic film, and it did a lot better. Master & Commander looked bad and flopped.

I'm not surprised. Even though Last Samurai did better at the BO, it didnt' do so well with critics. Master and Commander got great critical reviews and got that support that The Last Samurai did not.

I was shocked that LOTR even won Golden Globes. I predict no major win for it on Oscar night. To me, the Globe awards for LOTR seemed like a recognition that "Hey we were sorry for snubbing movies like Star Wars and the like in the past for major awards." That might work at one level, but not for the Oscars. I will cry if Jackson or the movie wins, literally.

I will take the Evan Rachel Wood snub for Best Actress because Holly Hunter got nominated for Thirteen. I'm torn though because while Pieces of April was mediocre at best, Patricia Clarkson was AWESOME in it. Clarkson won't win, but like the Whale Rider girl, it's all about just being nominated.

After seeing Master And Commander get a BP nod, I now know that it is LOTR's year. I do think that it will win for both movie and director, and it will deserve it.

Overall, it is a great year for movies that more than 30 people in NY and LA saw, and my interest in the Oscars just jumped tenfold. The only true lock this year is Finding Nemo for animated flick. Everything else is up for grabs; that is the way it should be.

Damn you WWE for making me change my sig. I'm sure you have good enough reasons to get rid of Shannon, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Let me thus be the first to say: BRING BACK DAFFNEY!

Kill Bill got jobbed in the editing, sound, sound effects editing and cinematography categories. Come on, it at least should've gotten ONE of these four.

Other than that, I'm surprisingly okay with the nominations this year. I echo the complain about no Albert Finney, but he's never been a Hollywood guy, which explains his five noms but no wins.

My picks to win....LOTR, Jackson, Penn, Theron, Robbins and Zellweger (though Renee is the one most ripe for the upset).

Wait…if it’s MLK Jr. Day AND Pat Patterson’s Birthday…who gets the token win here?-- Matt "Excalibur05" Hocking on a match between Mark Henry and Rico

MH: What’s a clever way to say that I have a penis?
CJ: Uh…Mark, nobody’s going to buy that shirt.
MH: How about if I say that I’ve got…a…uh…?
CJ: Coming up with T-Shirt ideas is hard Mark, why not leave it to the WWE marketing department.
MH: I know! I’ve got it!
CJ: Got what?
MH: Stank! That’s Mah Stank! I’m gonna make a fortune!!
CJ: “That’s Mah Stank”?
MH: On the front it’ll say “Can You Smell It?” and on the back it’ll say “That’s Mah Stank”. Everybody’ll buy it because they’ll think it’s a Rock shirt.
CJ: You know…you might be on to something there, sad to say.
MH: I can’t wait to show mah stank to Trish.

You know, I have a feeling that Spanky didn’t quit, he was fired. Why? So they could repackage Mark Henry as “Stanky.” Think about THAT!

Despite me rampant love of Mystic River, I REALLY don't want to see Robbins taking home the statuette come the 29th. His overplayed performance was the only weak spot of the film; it just felt waaay too overt and theatrical, and overbalanced the subtler work done by Penn and Bacon. Fingers crossed for Ken Watanabe-now THAT'S how you steal a movie.

I know that it was never going to happen, but I would have loved for Kill Bill to get a Best Score nomination. RZA does really good work, and it helped the film immensely. I also agree with you on the sound/sound effects catagories.
