ESPN - Four prime-time games highlight '08 kickoff weekend

The NFL season kicks off proper on Thursday, September 4 with the New York Giants facing the Washington Redskins. Kickoff will come 90 minutes early to make way for the Republican National Convention, because Republicans are football fans too.

NBC starts off their season with the Chicago Bears facing the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, the first regular season game hosted at the venue.

And ESPN kicks off Monday Night Football with the Brett Favre-less Packers against the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau and...the Oakland Raiders versus the Denver Broncos in Oakland.

Ok, seriously, is ESPN actively TRYING to find the worst possible games to put on so everyone can pay more attention to ESPN Variety Hour in the booth? The RAIDERS? Really?

Its not like ESPN gets to choose what teams they get. That is up to the NFL.

Besides, who really want to watch the Bronco's in prime time. The Rat is trying to turn into Al Jr.

Shouldn't be too bad, aren't they the "early" game?

Well boy did ESPN ever get the shitty end of that particular stick. Raiders? Against the Broncos? Really?!

At least that match up might be close I guess. Peyton Manning against Sexy Rex/Kyle Orton, probably not so much.

Pack/Vikes kicks off at 7pm ET I believe (or minight for ME) and is probably the pick of the bunch if only to see the start of the post-Favre era. Personally I think the Pack'll be just fine but time will tell.

Speaking of which, 'just' 156 days to go until the new season! Hmmph. At least I have Euro 08 to tide me over during the summer.

Let's be honest, it's opening week football. You're going to watch Monday night no matter what the game is. ESPN is happy to get a garbage game like Broncos-Raiders in week one rather than in, say, week nine when both teams are 3-6 and it would be ratings death.

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

Now lets be real here, neither team will be 3-6 come week 9. The Raiders have brought in alot of high priced players.

Plus both teams will most likely have had their buy week by then, and you can't play your 9th game until week 9, so I'm thinking

2-5 vs. 3-4

(and I'm a Raider fan, so they get the 3-4)

The 0-11 Dolphins festered the ESPN airwaves with their presence on MNF in Week 12. If that can happen, I don't doubt we can get a similar debacle next season.

One man's high priced is another man's over-paid.

Ah the off-season, time of crazy optimism. Says me, fully expecting 19 games of "Healthy Pro Bowl Donovan".

This decision baffled me no end. I painfully remember the McMahon-led Eagles being sufficiently sucky to be pulled mid-season from prime time not three years back. Why they couldn't have done the same to the '07 Dolphins is beyond me.

As a general rule, televised sacrifices should be a no-no.

Packers on the opening Monday Night Game? I wonder if Tony Kornheiser might mention to the audience once or twice (or between ever play no matter who has the ball) that Favre has retired.

It's a sad day for Jags fans, seeing perhpas the former face of the franchise leave. It's kinda bittersweet, because he wouldn't be playing if he stayed. Seven-year contract? That seems a bit much for a 33 year-old with past injuries.
