There's this game called MAPLE STORY, it's a MMORPG where you do a bunch of stuff, kind of like SECOND LIFE but this one is Japanese and the AVs are anime. Anyway, this woman who was 'married' in the game to a guy got dumped by him.
In retaliation, she logged on using his user name and password and 'killed' the character. For doing this, she could possibly spend 5 years in prison.
Seriously, some people need to get a fucking life.
Although IANAL, I do know that accessing an account that does not belong to you can be a violation of state and/or federal laws. Accessing a computer system/network without permission is, in fact, a violation of California State law.
The article doesn't detail the exact law under which she is facing potential prosecution, but I am willing to bet it has to do with accessing and account that doesn't belong to her.

I met an ex through Maple Story. It's more like a 2d WOW than Second Life as it's an RPG and SL is...not.
She was ADDICTED to that game. It was ironically one of the reasons we split up because I could not get her off of the damn game and come back to reality. People in that game take things way too seriously. People think they "own" maps and if you try to play on one, without their "permission" they will steal all your kills.
Because it's a South Korean MMO, it's all grinding. People spend hours measuring their Damage per second so they can find out how many .01% they can get in an hour (.1% an hour is good past level 30). It sucks your soul away. I am 2 years Maple Story free and I'm so glad I was able to pull myself away from it.
I never played WOW, but that South Park episode brought back many bad memories of my MS days with the ex. And it was funny as hell.
And this is why you should change all your known passwords immediately after breaking up with someone. I'm guessing she deleted the character using account access.
Wow... apparently marriage is a big part of the game.
Yeah, alot of quests are for married people only and you have to spend real money so you can assess their Cash Shop to buy the in-game wedding ring and other marriage stuff.
If only married people can access parts of the game, and suddenly she wasn't married (and presumably he was or was going to be again) I can see her being pretty pissed.
I hope that she can prove that she was previously authorized to access that account (because he gave her the account information and password) and because he had not changed that information by default she was still authorized by the owner. At worst she should be in violation of the game rules and have her account terminated (which in this case might be worse than jail time).

I never thought they'd get out. I guess, technically, they haven't yet, but this is definitely promising. 'West Memphis 3' may be freed, source says (cnn.com)
