ESPN is reporting that the Globe & Mail has reported that the NHL and the Players Union have agreed on a Salary Cap - Click Here (sports.espn.go.com)

It would be based on team by team revenues with a $34-36m ceiling and a $22-24m floor. It's a first step but an agreement is still a ways off.

Any step is closer to hockey. While they still need to agree on what they'll do with free agency and arbitration, the big thing was the cap. I am hopeful that this is the start of a new CBA and the return of the NHL in October.

I'm glad they started these marathon talks AFTER the whole season had already been canceled. Where were these fucking 14-hour sessions back in October, guys?

Screw the NHL.

"You can look the other way once, and it's no big deal, except it makes it easier for you to compromise the next time, and pretty soon that's all your doing; compromising, because that's the way you think things are done. You know those guys I busted? You think they were the bad guys? Because they weren't, they weren't bad guys, they were just like you and me. Except they compromised... Once." -- Jack Bauer

Bettman's always been about crushing ze union. His owners lost, collectively, much less money by not playing this season than they did in any recent year of the latest CBA.

The owners (and Bettman) needed to prove to the NHLPA that they weren't worried about tossing away a whole season to change the system.

Betteman has done a nice job against the union. The managing of the league is a whole different story.

Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux, Howe, Richard? Those are the nominees? Sounds like a fair list... Richard is out because he's from more or less the same time period as Howe and Howe's numbers eclipse Richard's easily.
