As has already been brought up, this is quite a tangent. But since we are discussing it, we might as well get the details right. The writers of the songs that Weird Al parodies do get writers credit (because they wrote the music), and therefore some amount of royalties. Anyone can verify that by looking at allmusic.com, where they list the composed by lines for songs. Amish Paradise, for example, says it was composed by A. Ivey Jr. (Coolio), Doug Rasheed, L. Sanders, Stevie Wonder (who were all listed as composers of Gangsta's Paradise), and Weird Al Yankovic.

Because he is paying the composers (the actual singers, if different, get nothing), he has no legal obligation to ask for permission. And, has been pointed out, parody is recognized as a fair use under copyright laws. Al chooses to do so because he doesn't want to make anyone angry. There have been times when the artists have said no, and he has respected that (off the top of my head, Prince, and The Offspring [a parody of "Come Out And Play" called "Laundry Day"] come to mind).

Because of the royalties that are paid to the composers, I've heard it said that no Weird Al album will ever be 100% parodies, for the simple fact that he wouldn't make any money from them. And I won't even get into dealing with composer royalites on one of his polka medleys, which contain snippets from something like 13 different songs.

As always, way more information than you wanted.

Come to think of it, why didn't WWE use the Motorhead version in the first place, during the live show? The only issue here is that they should use the original song (as opposed to generic crunchy metal like Dreamer's current "Man in the Box" ripoff), not the original artists. As long as the tune and the lyrics are the same, the entrance still works.

I certainly wouldn't think ECW purists would care which version is used. And the cover is incredibly true to the original. I love Metallica and Motorhead, and yet I can't tell the two versions apart until Hetfield or Lemmy starts singing.

No, seriously, ECW purists would both notice and care.

Well, there's about the amount of extas you'd expect for a rush job DVD, heh. There's the JBL commentary, each of the "ECW Icon" commercial spots (Dreamer, Sabu, Sandman, etc), the Funeral of ECW off of RAW, and then something called "Fans at One Night Stand" which I haven't checked out yet. I have no clue what's in there, heh.

They did, and it's still hilarious. :)

Useless fact for the day: KaneRobot as a 7th grader called into MTV Rockline in 1992 and got on the air with Al and...Martha Quinn. The question was if he had tried to parody a song and the original artist didn't want him to. He did make note of the Prince thing. Damn U, Prince!

No Best Buy stores have this available. Online it's on backorder which is bullsh*t. No Best Buy's in the country got them yet. The same went for Greatest 80's & Road Warriors DVD sets. They finally got those sets almost a week later then every other retailer. Hmm... what's going no behind the scenes here >?

I'm pretty sure I saw the 80's DVD at Best Buy on Tuesday and I did get the Road Warriors DVD on release day last Tuesday, but One Night Stand wasn't there yet. For that matter, no stores near me had it that I could find.

Amazon seems to have some of each of these used, and it looks like you can get them new as well.

Wow, the fact that you can get the DVD for about twenty bucks less than the cost of ordering PPV really puts into perspective how much the cable operators must be getting. No wonder Vince is always trying to find a way to do an end run around them.

(Of course, it DOESN'T explain the cost of the Webcast except for the old standby "Vince is really greedy" argument)

Has anyone ever tried buying used DVDs from one of Amazon.com's sellers? I've bought a ton of books that way, but never a used DVD. I was tempted to a few months ago, but I chickened out at the last minute.

I tend to shy away from buying used disc media if I can't see it before hand. I've had problems in the past buying used video games. They always resolved them, but it was never worth the hassle to me.

How much do you want to spend to avoid a hassle? For me, it's got to be more than $5 savings to justify the risk.

I bought both the Mick Foley: Hard Knocks and Cheap Pops DVD and the latest Smackdown game from one of the Amazon.com sellers, and I didn't have any problems with either.
