It's going late into the night, and the barbecue sauce is flowing at the Alamodome as JR's Oklahoma Sooners go into the half tied with the #1 Missouri Tigers, 14-14.

But the bizarre story is coming out of Morgantown, where the #2 West Virginia Mountaineers are going into the 4th quarter trailing Dave "Hopalong" Wannstedt's Pitt Panthers 10-7. WV's starting QB has been knocked out of the game, and Pittsburgh had a TD taken away by a horrible phantom holding call. (They then missed a short FG)

Fans of #3 Ohio State, and especially #4 Georgia are looking on with great interest. Also down in Champaign, #15 Illinois fans are still hoping to smell the Roses if the Buckeyes move up into the Championship game, since #11 Boston College and #14 Tennessee have already fallen. #12 Hawaii's game for a BCS berth is still to come.

Wolverine fans have to be in a bad mood after Les Miles spurned their offer and decided to stay with LSU, possibly because of a "story" leaked by ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit (a Buckeye grad) early this morning.

Not everything is wacky though, USC beat UCLA handily, and Navy stomped Army 38-3, their record 6th straight win in my favorite game each year.

(edit: corrected ACC game as pointed out by Texas Kelly - no offense to the Hokienautics out there)

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

Boston College lost, not Virginia Tech.

I firmly believe with all my heart that if Missouri loses, the team to back into the title game against Ohio State has to be Kansas. You cannot justify putting in a Georgia team that didn't even make its conference championship ahead of the SEC champion LSU Tigers, who achieved equal success with a much tougher schedule than Georgia did and did not lose in regulation once (which the Bulldogs did twice). You also can't justify putting in Virginia Tech ahead of LSU, simply because of the ass-kicking the Tigers laid on the Hokies early in the season. You can, however, justify the Jayhawks, due to their better overall record.

If the Buckeyes' opponent is anyone other than Missouri, Kansas, or LSU, I'll call bullshit daily until the day of the game.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

Despite the repeated best efforts of the back judge in the West Virginia/Pitt game, all hell looks like it might just break loose. Unless Missouri stages a 4th quarter comeback, the chaos theory really hits mythical levels. Someone needs to tell Mike Patrick how many time-outs West Virginia had, as his confusion was really bad.
By not playing, Ohio State found the only safe method to survive this season. They seem to be in. Unless Mizzou pulls off the miracle, this could get into some real ugly territory. Do coaches leave teams completely off their ballot in order to manipulate the process? If you are a Pac-10 coach, do you support your conference by putting USC #2 and leaving Georgia and LSU off your ballot or out of the Top 15? If you are a Big Ten Coach, do you vote Kansas #1/2 in order to provide the apparently easiest opponent for your conference champion to face, thus attempting to resurrect the image of the conference after last season? Does Oklahoma pull off a 1977 Notre Dame by coming out of the clouds by beating #1 Missouri and jumping into the national title game because the SEC teams split their own votes and no one puts Va. Tech at the top due to memories of the Destruction on the Bayou?
The way LSU has played down the stretch, I'd have problems putting them in the title game. It's tough to put Va. Tech in over LSU because they got destroyed by them. Georgia is playing well, but couldn't win their division. Oklahoma beat #1, but they also lost to Texas Tech the week after Tech had 58 hung on them. Kansas only has 1 loss, but, they had wins that are similar to unbeaten Hawaii, who isn't jumping up this high. USC has the talent, but lost to Stanford at home. If not for Georgia giving them loss #3, Florida would probably be a given right now and they aren't even going to a BCS Game. People thought I was joking at the time, but if Michigan had knocked off Wisconsin and Ohio State they might have been playing for the National Title.

Should Mizzou lose, you have to put LSU in the title game versus Ohio State ... I can see how people would argue for Kansas, but they didn't win their conference championship. Heck, I think Va. Tech should be mentioned in all of this.

I still think it's bullshit that three of the six BCS conferences don't have championship games. EXPAND PEOPLE!

Like you said, though, we're about 10 minutes of game time away from total chaos breaking loose unless Mizzou can pull off the comeback. My opinion's just that - my opinion - but I can hem and haw all I want if the ultimate outcome looks like bullshit to me.

The funny thing is even after all this we're still not gonna get anywhere closer to a playoff system; I could see this season make the commissioners consider the idea of a plus-one, though.

I personally think it's bullshit that a conference is required to have 12 teams to stage a conference championship game. I don't see any reason why the Big East can't split into two divisions of four and the Pac-10 into two divisions of five, as is, and add a conference championship. As for the Big Ten, it's high time Notre Dame bites the bullet and signs up anyway, which would give them the twelve they need.

Normally, at this point, I would make my best guesses for the bowls assuming that Hawaii will take care of business, but in this crazy season, no fucking way am I going to make that assumption. I'll do 'em in the morning once all is said and done.

All I'll add at this point is if I had a poll vote, it would be for an LSU/Kansas national championship.

Both the Georgia and USC coaches have turned up on SportsCenter to stump for a spot in the title game. You'd think Les Miles would go on to talk up his team to voters, but after (justifiably) ripping ESPN's coverage of his job non-switch, even the hosts were laughing at how unlikely that'd be.

And yet, he's on the show right now (AND he's trying the "we're undefeated in regulation" line again!)

Kansas simply hasn't earned it. They beat no one that matters and lost their only game to a top team. They are Hawaii with a loss(which may be Hawaii in a little bit).

And in the end, it's not chaos so much as a return to form. The teams playing for the title will likely be top conference teams(Ohio State vs LSU).

And no it won't help a Plus One format, because who do you pick for the extra game no matter the outcome of the bowls? it would be just as controversial.

If I had to vote the BCS conference champs in order I think I'd have to go:

1. Ohio State
2. LSU
3. Virginia Tech
4. Oklahoma
5. USC
6. West Virginia

I don't think you can move Kansas up - they only have one more loss than Missouri because Missouri had an opportunity to lose in the Big XII championship game. LSU beat Virginia Tech and Tennessee (who beat Georgia) and lost two games in deep OT - it's stupid that we have to pick two teams but out of the other five they have the best resum.

While we have all the college football fans on the board watching this thread, let me pose you this question: how many of you have actually WATCHED Hawaii play? I honestly think their offense is the most exciting brand of football I've seen in quite some time. It's like watching a 2-minute offense (with a little bit of running mixed in for good measure) for the entire duration of the game. When I posted earlier about them being down 21 points in the first quarter, I should have realized that with the way they play, 21 points is literally NOTHING when you still have 45+ minutes left to play.

Currently - Washington 28, Hawai'i 21 (Halftime)

StingArmy: I've actually been working up my guess for the final BCS matchups with the game on in the background, and I've had Hawai'i winning this game all along. I would say based on my faith in Ty Willingham, but Wannstedt winning a big game has thrown me off Seriously, the Rainbows have an unbelievable offense, I think they're a legit BCS buster.

wmatistic: I think the "Plus One" concept means you go back to the conference tie-ins, then let the voters choose the championship game from among the winners of the Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta bowls. There generally wouldn't be a #1 vs. #2 matchup on New Year's Day under this plan.

Also, Washington is 4-8 because their defense is awful, particularly their pass defense (see Willie Tuitama throwing for 510 on them).

Ahem, PLAYOFF

As much as it sucks to see two 'traditional' powers (especially one as weak as OSU) make the title game in this crazy season, it appears as if Ohio State and LSU will end up as #1 and #2. I really can't see how Georgia or Virginia Tech could be argued ahead of the Tigers given that LSU beat them both, and USC's losses to Stanford/Oregon (given how the Ducks ended up) were worse than LSU's losses to Arkansas/Kentucky.

In conclusion, HAVE A PLAYOFF

Edited to add that Hawaii just came back to beat Washington, thus finishing at 12-0. Put them in the title game, they're the only unbeaten team. Boise State baby, Boise State.

Hawai'i pulls it out late, 35-28.

As ridiculous as this season has been, I don't think it's near as much fun if everyone's playing for a spot in the Top 8, against trying to get into the title game. Which is not to say that the current system is better than a playoff for finding the best team, just that it would take something away from the regular season. Your mileage may vary if you root for a perennial power.

Now for some fearless BCS Predictions:

Let us presume that the BCS Title Game turns out to be (as rumored) #1 Ohio State vs #2 LSU.

BCS rules then necessitate filling in the four other games according to conference tie-ins:

Rose: (poached), Big 10 Champ vs USC, Pac 10 Champ
Sugar: (poached), SEC Champ vs at large
Fiesta: Oklahoma, Big 12 Champ vs at large
Orange: Virginia Tech, ACC Champ vs at large

West Virginia, Big East Champ has clinched a BCS spot.
Hawai'i, WAC Champ and ranked #12 or better in BCS standings has clinched a BCS spot.
Teams must be in the BCS top 14 to be selected.
No more than two teams from one conference may be selected.

The Rose Bowl gets first choice to replace Ohio State.
The Sugar Bowl gets second choice to replace LSU.
At large selections go to Orange, Fiesta, then Sugar.

I'm thinking the voters will try to boost the conference champions up in the final poll:

1- Ohio State (Big 10)
2- LSU (SEC)
3- Oklahoma (Big 12)
4- Virginia Tech (ACC)
5- USC (Pac 10)
6- Georgia (SEC)
7- Kansas (Big 12)
8- Missouri (Big 12)
9- West Virginia (Big East)
10- Florida (SEC)
11- Hawai'i (WAC)
12- Arizona State (Pac 10)
13- Illinois (Big 10)
14- Boston College (ACC)

Missouri is out as third Big 12 team.
Florida is out as third SEC team.

*Rose has 1st choice of Georgia, Kansas, W. Virginia, Hawai'i, Az. State, Illinois, or BC. Rose Bowl chooses Illinois to have a traditional Pac-10/Big-10 matchup.

*Sugar has 2nd choice of Georgia, Kansas, W. Virginia, Hawai'i, Az. State, or BC. Sugar Bowl chooses Georgia to have an SEC team.

*Orange has 3rd choice of Kansas, W. Virginia, Hawai'i, Az. State, or BC. Orange chooses West Virginia as a better draw over Kansas.

*Fiesta has 4th choice of Kansas, Hawai'i, Az. State, or BC. Fiesta chooses local school Arizona State over giving Oklahoma another chance against the WAC.

*Sugar must take Hawai'i as the BCS Buster.

Sorry, Kansas.

Rose Bowl: #5 USC vs #13 Illinois (USC 55, Illinois 17)
Sugar Bowl: #6 Georgia vs #11 Hawai'i (Hawai'i 45, Georgia 42)
Fiesta Bowl: #3 Oklahoma vs #12 Arizona State (Oklahoma 41, Arizona State 23)
Orange Bowl: #4 Virginia Tech vs #9 West Virginia (West Virginia 17, Virginia Tech 12)
BCS Championship: #1 Ohio State vs #2 LSU (LSU 31, Ohio State 20)

In any case, helluva day, helluva season.

Two things before I go to bed at this extremely late hour:

1. THAT was the West Virginia that was going to run all over Ohio State? The one that the was faster than Florida? The one that Ohio State should be afraid of?

2. I'm very excited to listen for the next month about how lousy OSU is, how much of an atrocity is is that they're "backing into the title game", how much they're going to be stomped by Georgia, LSU, USC or whoever winds up in the national championship (although, somehow, whoever it is will have NOT backed into that same spot.)

Seriously, if today's coverage was any indication, I should just toss my TV out the window now, because these "experts" are going to drive me insane over the next few weeks. I'll say this much-if Ohio State makes it to the championship, and wins it, there aren't enough crows in this country for me to shoot down, grill up, and send to all of the media outlets in This United States of America.

Whatever happens, remember that the votes in the final coaches poll of the regular season are made public, so I don't think we'll see anything too shady. I can see Georgia dropping, at the expense of LSU and Va. Tech.

If I had a vote, screw it, I'd put Hawaii (assuming they remain BCS-eligible) and LSU in the game. Softer schedule or not, if they're the only BCS-eligible unbeaten out there, they go in the game. I give LSU the nod for a conference championship with 2 close OT losses.

For those screaming playoff- look at NEXT season. If we're back to business as usual next year, all this talk goes away. If next year goes the same as this one did, that might be what finally spurs the playoff talk into reality.
