Seven sports presented their vision for inclusion in the Olympic Games programme today in a series of briefings for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board. The seven sports — baseball, golf, karate, roller sports, rugby, softball and squash — are vying for two programme slots at the 2016 Games.

Apparently they've set a hard limit of 28 summer sports, and they currently have 26. Baseball and Softball were the two sports eliminated for the 2012 Olympics. Golf was an Olympic sport in 1900 and 1904. The rest have never been competed in the Olympics.

The current 26 sports are Swimming (which includes Synchronized Swimming, Diving, and Water Polo), Fencing, Shooting, Archery, Football (which of course is soccer), Table Tennis, Athletics, Gymnastics (Artistic, Rythmic, and Trampoline), Taekwondo, Badminton, Handball, Tennis, Basketball, Hockey (Field), Triathlon, Boxing, Judo, Volleyball (which includes Beach Volleyball), Canoe-Kayak, Modern Pentathlon, Weightlifting, Cycling, Rowing, Wrestling, Equestrian, and Sailing.

Looking at that, I can see why Karate would be annoyed that Taekwondo and Judo both are in, but they aren't. I don't know why they can't combine these under a sport called "Martial Arts" or something.

If you were in charge, what would you keep and what you get rid of? I'd get rid of Equestrian and Modern Pentathlon (MP is supposed to represent the qualities needed for a 19th century soldier, as this video shows). I'm not sure about keeping Fencing, Shooting, or Archery either. A list of all the recognized but not currently Olympic competed sports is at http://www.olympic.org/uk/sports/recognized/index_uk.asp .

They are also considering 33 changes to events for 2012.

The International Olympic Committee will consider the introduction of women's boxing and an overhaul of the modern pentathlon among possible changes to events in time for London 2012. The IOC sports director, Christophe Dubi, said today that the executive board would consider 33 changes to the 26 existing Olympic sports before the London Games.

Those two changes listed are the only two I can find details of. The other 31 remain secret I guess. So, Women's Boxing. Is that something you'd watch during the Olympics?

Yeah, that would make sense. For that matter, if diving and water polo are part of swimming and athletics (aka track and field) is one sport, then I would certainly hope that softball and baseball would be considered one sport, not two.

Would pay top dollar to see them combine polo and diving.

Regular Polo and diving? Me too.

I love the modern Pentathlon. But then, I love shooting and archery and equestrian events in general. Actually, I believe the Olympics are too big now.

I would stay rid of baseball and get rid of softball too.

I would eliminate Rhythmic and trampoline gymnastics, Sailing and canoe/Kayak.

I agree on adding Karate, and think Squash should be in if Handball is, but personally, I could drop both.

The rest - roller sports - no. Rugby? No. Golf? We already have weekly and yearly world golf championships.

and that's where I focus - I'd drop football too - we have the world cup, Saling - we have the Cup and other competitions.

I believe "handball" (squash without the raquet) is not in the olympics, however "team handball" is. Two very different sports. Team handball is similar to soccer, but you use your hands instead of kicking the ball.

Golf definitely doesn't need another 'event' between the majors, WGC, Ryder and Presidents Cup matches.

Baseball is out, since they won't accommodate the break in the season needed for preparation and tournament. (Nor should they)

I would put Softball back in, as they've got a decent worldwide footprint, and the Olympics would still be a big deal event for the sport (Why I don't like Tennis on this level).

My other choice would be RollerGames, although banked track skating seems to be a lost art. Always marked for Roller Derby back in the day....

Seriously, I'd go with the Ruggers as a second add.

Not to mention team handball's exponentially more badass. We're talking orders of magnitude here.
