I was on SI.com reading some articles in the MMA section and I saw a link to this article from the SI Vault on the sidebar. I figured at least a few people here would be interested in reading it. This was before I was aware of wrestling (or much else, I was barely 1 yr old!), so it's a bit surreal to read.

Lloyd: When I met Mary, I got that old fashioned romantic feeling, where I'd do anything to bone her.
Harry: That's a special feeling.

I remember being pissed off because someone stole this entire article out of my high school's library. I ended up sitting and reading it at my local public library.

Around the same time, there was a LIFE Magazine article about pro wrestling that I desperately wanted because it had a cool picture of Paul Orndorff inside (he was lifting a bench with a bunch of kids on it).

Bashing Hulk's wrestling skill is a decades-old tradition.

Welcome home, men of the 2nd Bn, 127th Inf, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army Nat'l Guard! Good luck to those down south.

In his book, I remember Hogan saying that a lot of fans saved that SI issue, and he still signs those covers even today.

Wow, Meltzer was quoted in there...I didn't know he was doing his thing already when he was just 24.

Some of the faux-slang writing was kind of hokey though... the continued "maahhvelous" Billy Crystal catchphrase, really?

I actually have this magazine somewhere :)

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

Here we are twenty years later, and sports writers still make the laziest possible mainstream references to popular culture that embarrassingly date themelves as soon as they're written, let alone in hindsight.

It's not just sports writers.

stories about comic books still use "BIFF!POW!BAM!" from the Batman TV show 40 years ago.

After the weak way Punk was booked in his last title reign--as the cheap win was followed by non-title losses--I think they did indeed need to make him look strong. In fact, I'd like to see him get some solid wins (probably over Matt and Morrison)
