favorite obscure bands that you hope get the credit they deserve someday? And, do you think it's better to go mainstream and risk having their musical style/approach changed for the masses, but to get a lot of credit/fans.. or should they stay underground and remain the awesome band you fell in love with? Here's my wishlist:
HUM Failure (They've already broken up, sadly. BUT, if their music picked up in popularity, maybe they'd get back together.)
System of a Down (They're going mainstream, slowly. I hope they don't change their style.. I've been a fan of theirs for over three years.)
Blackmore's Night Slipknot (Already made it, kinda.)
LMP (Hell, yes. Xyylivia, you're my hero.)
Short list, but I clog up the board enough. And, on the question I asked.. I think it's better to have them go mainstream and risk the change. Why? Because if they stay underground, chances are, they won't be able to survive long enough to stay together. And, if the masses can love their music 'as is,' then there's really no reason for change, right? I'd hope they go mainstream and stay the same or relatively the same.
i would really like to see del the funkeehomosapian and the entire hieroglyphics crew get big. real big. i'd love to see trendy little high school girls carrying del lunch boxes. i want them to sell unused beats for car commercials. (www.hieroglyphics.com)
it'd be real cool if reflection eternal and blackstar started getting the kind of crossover success of even the roots. blackstar is essentially r.e. with mos def, and i get the feeling mos is going to be huge one day in his own right. (as well he should.)
operation ivy's album should be huge. everyone should know those songs by heart.

On the obscure, smart, educated, Canadian hip-hop tip...do yourselves a favor and check out my man Buck 65.
Q: If you could have interviewed Marvin Gaye, where would you have proposed to meet and what would you have asked him?
A: I would have met anywhere as long as it was before his father shot him. I would have asked him, "Hey, don't you think there's some chance that your father might shoot you? To death, I mean?"
Wyn: Gee....I wonder who else likes HUM around here....hmmm....
Moxy Früvous is the only band I really like that could be considrered obscure...I suppose Matthew Sweet and Our Lady Peace would be on the verge of that distinction.
Argh! This is the kind of thread I've being dying to see, but with me being English and all, the bands would be even more obscure! Any of you guys heard of the Lost Prophets over there? Nice little welsh band, with a kick ass single "Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja" (cool title, eh?) .
"Nobody enjoys a good time more than I do, but this business of yours is as legitimate as a three-legged donkey...which of course is illegitimate because as we all know donkeys have four legs."
While I guess they're in the one-hit wonder category, it's criminal that The Flaming Lips are not the biggest band in this or any other world. Go listen to "The Soft Bulletin" and if you haven't realized this, go listen to it again and again until you do.
Some other ones who ought to be selling more albums than N'Sync: Edson - a Swedish pop band with just a hint of Belle & Sebastian style melancholy. "For Strength" is their new album due out this month, and I'm sure going to be looking to import it for my pleasure. Robbie Fulks - The most whip-smart songwriter in the alt-country genre. Expanding horizons with latest disc "Couples in Trouble" but still telling very catchy tales. And if you don't like modern Nashville country, download "Fuck This Town", you won't be sorry. Godspeed You Black Emperor/A Silver Mt. Zion - Canadian post-rock collective GYBE and offshoot ASMZ make the most mind-boggling orchestral crescendo based sound collages detailing the inevitable decline of the large-scale industrial capitalist world. But even Gordon Gekko would be impressed by the sheer mammoth walls of sound and delicate counterpoints of silence. Neil Finn - Famous worldwide as the lead singer of later Split Enz and then of Crowded House, new album not even released in America until almost 2 years after its worldwide debut. Still the catchiest songwriter on earth now that Paul McCartney has lost his knack. "One All" should be out in the US soon, and is available everywhere else. Pedro The Lion - A Christian rock band that you don't have to be ashamed of to your athiest friends. David Bazan is a very powerful songwriter, who gets across his struggles with his faith among other things without ever making you feel creepy or preached at. Some others I would explain but this post is running too damn long as is: Randy First Floor Power Anna Fermin's Trigger Gospel Red House Painters Chantal Kreviazuk K'S Choice
The Urinals, Flipper, Gang of Four (not so obscure) and Blackaliscious (again, not so obscure). I don't really think Del is that hard to find. I dunno. He was bigger 8 years ago than he is today.
opivy are fairly well known, but i want them to be HUGE. blink 182 huge. like, every green day fan should know "sound system" and "caution" and "junkies running dry" by heart. getting $10,000 gaurantees for every show on a reunion tour, which they would summarily shoot down. (unlike the jello-less dead kennedys tour.)
(cool story - green day opened for op ivy on their last show ever. their bassist's guitar broke and he used green day's bass.)
del and the hiero emporium have good distro but it just boggles my mind that they're not Big. i mean, that's crossover friendly stuff. "catch all this"? get off him!
ps: godspeed you black emperor! are fucking great. thanks for the tip about the offshoot band.

Actually, I have heard this. A lot. They're playing it all the time on MTV2. In fact, the tune is on the MTV2 CD they're releasing.
Soak: A Texas industrial/rock band, originally from Austin but I think they're based out of Dallas now. They kind of sound like a less heavy version of Static-X, or maybe like Disturbed played at 2x speed.
Everything's cool when you're Yun [point] Cheol [point] Su [point]
Anyone heard of Project Wyze? I'm not sure how obscure they are. They're touring Canada with Ozzy on his up coming canadian tour, and they played at Ozfest last year. I wouldn't go out to call them great or anything, and I only mention them because the two front men from the band are from my hometown of Sudbury *dramatic pause* Ontario, Canada.
I have faith that Buck 65 will eventually get the props he deserves, as will Six Too.
Tom Waits deserves so much more credit than he's ever received it's criminal (yes, he's got two grammies, but he should have more; plus an oscar, maybe two).
NOFX deserves to be huge, but they don't want to be. Their call, I guess.
Martin Sexton. If you don't know, I can't explain.
The Pixies. I'm tempted to say no band influenced rock music in the nineties as much as these guys, but it could very well be true.

kurt cobain hisself called "nevermind" a pixies rip off. how many songs out there snake the opening line to "debaser"? the cranberries' "i shot john lennon", that one hit blunder with "choke the medicine down"... too many to count! (or just two. you know, whichever.)
i'm with you on tom waits, too. "closing time" and "rain dogs" are just fine fucking examples of great albumry.
