Apparently the search engines go through the referrals pages too. The reason I mention this is because I was looking at the referalls, and I see the page they got linked to was ... a referall page. In other words, they type in a phrase, and they end up on a page where it lists what other people have typed to end up on a certain page. Hopefully, they follow that link to actually get to the thread.
I wonder how often that happens. Of course, we have no way of knowing, since in order to keep track of that, we'd need a page that shows the referrals to the referrals pages. And then what would happen when the search engines started crawling that, and someone ended up being referred to that?

I've hurt my head thinking about this too long.

NOTE: The above post makes no sense. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I already track referrals to referrals, but it's a super secret page that nobody knows about so bots can't find it. Needless to say this is nothing new, albeit kinda rare. I think referral pages weren't disallowed by our robots.txt for about a month after we started putting them in the database, so naturally they STILL show up because some crawlers (mostly Google) think results from March are still pretty great and won't expire them. Same deal with ending up at the "new reply" page - they're not SUPPOSED to, but it happens. We just redirect those hits to the thread proper.
