So no one watched the special?

Adam Rose def Camacho via Party Foul.

The Ascension def El Local & Kalisto via Fall of Man on El Local.

Rusev beats down Mojo Rawley in a non-match.

Tyler Breeze def Sami Zayn to be the #1 contender. Sami Zayn tried to do a suplex flip into a sit down powerbomb but he kind of messed it up. They had to roll around and re-try to spot. Ending was kind of lame... Breeze "accidentally" low blow Sami when he tried a Helluva Kick and finished him off with a Beauty Shot.

Paige comes out to say a few words about the NXT Women's Championship.

Charlotte def Natalya to be the NXT Women's Champion. Pretty long match. After everyone hugged and cried.

Adrian Neville def Tyson Kidd to retain the NXT Championship. Ended with Neville tossing Kidd from the top rope into a hurricanrana. He then lands the Red Arrow for the pin. After the match, Adrian tried to shake Tyson's hand but Tyson just walked away shoulder checking Adrian on the way out.

It was a night of new theme songs. Tyler Breeze had a new theme of him doing a type of spoken word to techno. I just heard his previous theme in a movie trailer recently too. Charlotte also had new theme called "Recognition" (now available on iTunes!) which was techno with Ric Flair's theme mixed in. I think Sami Zayn had a new theme as well, it was hard to tell with the crowd chanting over it. NXT continues to change good themes into crap. (Such as Ascension's previous theme.)

Kris Kristofferson was shown in the crowd, and later Cesaro and Christian were shown.

Both the Zayn/Breeze and Kidd/Neville matches are worth watching. Tyson Kidd played his character as more cocky, smug and heelish.

They gave Natalya and Charlotte over 16 minutes. I still think Charlotte is terrible, but at least this match was passable.

It was a good wrestling show. The NXT cupboards feel really bare right now, but everyone tries really hard.

I enjoyed Breeze/Zayn, but giving Breeze the win seemed like a reach. I enjoy what he does down in NXT, but he's got no place on the WWE roster other than comedy guy we laugh at and if and when they do bring him up he will get killed by the announcers. It feels like something ECW would do when they were low on talent, 'oh hey look Danny Doring is a threat now'. Zayn is really great though.

I don't care for Adrian Neville. He jumps. He's RVD without the tables, chairs and swagger. He's got a strange look. Good to ser Tyson Kidd getting some play though This didn't really feel like a championship match.

I haven't wanted to see someone get squashed as badly as I wanted to see MoJo Rawley get squashed in a long time.

You two are nutty. That women's match was GREAT.

I didn't think so. It was long and they kept up most of the time. Charlotte is clearly learning and coming along, and that is the point. It probably should have been kept to ten minutes.

The "This is Awesome" chant is the most overused thing in wrestling right now.

This show felt like NXT getting a little too cute with itself and maybe becoming a too self aware. It's possible that they just need the next batch of talent to come up to flush things out. I liked it, it's always good to get a WRESTLING show, they flow so nicely. Better than the last couple of Raws, but not as good as Arrival.

Edit: It can't be stated enough, but how nice is it to have an announce team that enhances the product?

Also the fact that The Network has done nothing to fix the Xbox feed is just sad. What exactly are they doing over there?

I don't watch much NXT, but came off pretty impressed with what I saw with this show. The crowd seemed really into it.

Breeze/Zayn was fun to watch.

I really like the whole Rusev/Lana gimmick. It's a simple throwback to evil foreigner squashes, but it's fun for now. Eventually he'll have to have real matches and feuds.

Yep, I'm with you. Zayn/Breeze and Neville/Kidd were both good, but Charlotte/Natalya was better than both and easily the best thing on the show. I'm fine with saying Charlotte is still a little rough around the edges, but watching that match, it felt like she had it. A lot of raw athleticism, making it look like she meant it the whole time and some really interesting transitions between the various spots that both made sense and were out-of-the-ordinary enough to seem like someone actually coming up with them on the fly to get out of moves. I don't want to oversell this as some kind of match of the year or anything, but it was pretty damn good, told a real, coherent story and was a great use of Natalya, both as an in-ring performer and to get over the idea of Charlotte being someone special about to ascend. (Also, it's worth watching for Super Proud Dad Flair vs. Eh, Who Gives A Shit Bret on the outside.)

Animated Rusev seeming to get actually annoyed by Mojo and being super excited to destroy him was vastly more entertaining than the disengaged Rusev we get on Raw (I get the idea of Rusev being so good that he doesn't even have to try, it's actually commendable, but it hasn't been working and nobody on camera but Lana has even been bother to sell it).

Zayn/Breeze was a little messy at spots but still fun. The finish was something I can't recall seeing very often, if at all: a heel accidentally hitting a low blow in a legit, defensible way and then simply taking advantage of it to win. It almost felt like they were setting Zayn up to turn there out of frustration, but the post-show stuff seems to not bear that out.

I'd need to see more of him, but I disagree about Breeze being doomed if he gets called up. He's basically working the original, heel Heartbreak Kid gimmick just updated for a modern audience, and having him sing his own theme now puts a button on it. They worked hard to get across - and he backed it up in the ring - that he's a goof outside the match but genuinely mean as a competitor. That's been a pretty successful gimmick when given to talented performers over the years (Michaels early Goldust, guys named Adrian).

Compare that to Rose, who seems to be working the face side of that gimmick, and I'm not sure it plays right. Maybe it was just not-great match booking, but Camacho beat the hell out of him until the whistle blew and it was just time for Rose to start winning, vs. Breeze staying agressive the whole time. There's nothing to indicate that Breeze is anywhere on the level of those guys above, but I think he's got plenty of upside.

Regal worked hard to get that over, and he was great throughout. Not afraid to be funny, but mostly concerned with getting across what the people in the ring were doing and adding a Veteran Performer angle to explaining things like why they do the rest holds they do and how wrestlers are able to kick out after big moves (don't know if it was intentional or just Regal creating the narrative on the fly, but some of the best stuff in Zayn/Breeze was Regal following how good the covers were on each pin attempt). He's said himself, and I believe him, that he'd never be allowed to do what he's doing on either "real" show, but something JBL COULD learn is how to be a heel-sympathetic color man who doesn't disagree with EVERY SINGLE STATEMENT the other announcers make.

Some weird/bad stuff:

I assumed the tag match would be a Kalisto showcase, but they gave him almost nothing there and it was more of an Ascension squash/showcase. Odd choice.

The pre-show interview with Cole and Kidd/Natalya was setting up a very obvious Heel Natty driving a Face Kidd nuts angle, which would have been interesting. (Cole was very much Late-Period WCW Evil Mike Tenay, which seemed to amuse Heyman). During and after the show, though, Natty was largely a face (aside from some fair and earned taunting of Flair) and Kidd turned instead, which made it seem like not everyone was on the same page. Not sure what they were going for, though intentionally annoying heel Natty and genuine humble face Natty are both far more likeable than anything else they've done with her for the last few years.

The crowd is definitely teetering on the edge of overdoing it, but they still have their moments. I wouldn't call them up yet, since the Post Raw Mania Crowd is still moving all the merchandise, but they have potential if they work on a few things.

Regarding Bret, I've been noticing this for quite a while when he's around Natty. She comes across as the spoiled whiny niece that got everything handed to her, but still hasn't got "it". She IS talented in the ring, but MAN, she sucks on the mic. Those times she was guest announcing, it was a train wreck.

Back to Bret, yeah, she's his niece, but is Anvil really that big of a mess that they can't bring him out? I think the only person that ever had more intensity than him was Savage. His laugh is damned near as memorable as DiBiase's.

I came in during the page interview, which was unfortunate since Zayn/Breeze is what I was looking forward to most. I would put thumbs in the middle for the women's match. There was some good stuff there but the length was a definitely too much for me. I did love the figure four and sharpshooter battle.

I'm not super impressed with Neville. He's got some good high flying moves but he's got a weird look and not great mic skills. I'm not sure he's even a Evan Bourne/Kofi Kingston level high-flying face.

It was weird that Nattie/Charlotte feuded, they brought the families into and then hugged it out in the end. When Neville offered a handshake to Kidd I thought this was going to be a ROH show where everybody had to shake hands. I was glad Kidd blew him off.

I watched a lot of the fallout too. Pretty good stuff there, mainly because Heyman is gold. His reaction during Adam Rose and the Rosebuds dancing was just amazing.

Didn't the WWE sign Kris Kristofferson's son? Surprised they didn't throw that nuggget in there.

So Sami has a lock on the MOTY Slammy, yes?

The double uppercut from the outside during the tag match was a thing of beauty. El Local looked sloppy as all hell with his springboard spots.

I don't know what was happening with the extended figure 4 spot during the Women's match, but it was awkward.

Probably my favourite part of the main event was Neville back flipping out of the sunset bomb and he was all "no dice, fucker!" And Kidd was all "Holy shitballs!"

Line of the night for me was Regal wondering where the one legged Elvis impersonator was. "He does a great rendition of Blue Suede Shoe!" More Phoenix Nights references please.

The only thing that I can think of is Nattie just plain forgot how to sell a Figure Four.

Other than that, it was an amazingly good match. Even more so when you consider the lack of experience Charlotte has. I'd have to rewatch Nattie vs AJ from a couple months back, but this could easily be the best women's match WWE has had in years.

They do, but I wish they were helping the guys as much as they thought they were helping the guys. Doing the Ole chant is probably actually hurting Sami Zayn at this point - it becomes too easy for cynical people in charge to disregard his reactions as indy fans propping up an indy guy when they're still doing the indy chant. Generico's not around - if they're rooting for Sami to advance, they've got to cheer for him, not that masked guy.

But the match was cool and Sami coming up just short in great matches feels like it's going somewhere. It also feels like they've got a ways to go in that story and it wouldn't be easy to bail out of it right away if he got called up immediately, so maybe he's not being called up right away.

They worked hard to get across - and he backed it up in the ring - that he's a goof outside the match but genuinely mean as a competitor.

THIS. Regal definitely came into the match with a mission of getting Tyler Breeze over as more than a one dimensional goof. Both of them worked very hard at it.

Anvil really that big of a mess that they can't bring him out?

Probably! but it was more about having famous World Champions at ringside as a draw than father/daughter.

He's currently one of the nearly anonymous Rose Buds - the one who was in a match a few weeks back - and they may want to wait to acknowledge the connection when he's in a better chance to take advantage of it.

I wasn't excited about this card as much as Arrival, but I was very entertained and it exceeded my expectations. I wasn't a huge fan the card they put together, but the effort everyone put in made it a good show.

The main even was really good, but I would have preferred to see that spot given to someone else like Zayn, no offense to Kidd. It just didn't come off believable at all that he was going to win the title so it was anti-climatic. At least the match was fun though.

As for Neville, I am kind of luke warm on him as well. He does cool stuff but I really just don't care about him for some reason. It's weird that they seem to be bigger on him than Zayn right now. I thought maybe it was an anti-indie thing, but wasn't Neville big on the indies as Pac? Maybe it's just the case of they don't think Zayn needs the belt or even big wins since he is so over anyway. Or maybe they are recreating the Daniel Bryan loses every NXT match angle.

The women's title match was good. That figure four spot really bugged me though. It seemed like they both forgot at certain points who was supposed to be in pain and in control and then it ceased even looking like a figure four. Weird. Another match where I would have liked to see someone else get the spotlight. The Paige interview made it seem even weirder when she was talking about the NXT women's title being a springboard to the WWE Diva's title when one of the people in the match has already held that title.

Zayn/Breeze was tremendous. I really like both guys and thought it was an interesting mix of a down to earth normal guy character and a throwback kind of character. I just hope that Breeze tones down his Zoolander impression a bit. I like the gist of the gimmick but I have seen some interviews that just came off as a bad impression instead of being himself. And this is coming from someone who loves Zoolander. I felt bad that they had that one almost blown spot near the end but they recovered well and played it off.

Count me as surprised but not disappointed that they squashed MoJo like that. They had seemed to be building him up pretty big recently. This didn't really help NXT at all since Rusev is a main roster guy now so they could have just left if off. At least in the two title matches the main roster people put over NXT people big time.

Other than that I would have liked to see a debut or two at least in vignettes to get excited about a new wave of NXT guys. Whatever happened to Solomon Crowe? Did they drop that hacker gimmick already or is it just on hold? Or how about some new tag teams coming? Ascension really needs teams to wrestle other than squashes.

The Crowe appearance never made TV. He's toned the hacker gimmick down on NXT house shows (which must be amazing things.)

I liked Arrival better, but it was still pretty good - and possibly better than Payback will be this weekend? I think I'm one of those people who's bought the network but is really only using it to watch the one big show each month. Maybe that big show this month was really Takeover?

(That said, I'm very curious where this ends up on the most watched shows of the week list. Beating out either the pre or post Payback show would seem like a big deal for a show with 1/10th the non-Network hype.)

The women's title match was pretty much an unprecedented portrayal of women's wrestling in WWE. Including Paige/Emma on the last show, including Lita and Trish main eventing Raw. Seems like Charlotte has been preordained for a Roman Reigns-esque path to greatness. I think Natalya vs. AJ was a bit better as a match, but that was a throwaway Main Event main event while this was contextualized as a really big deal and they wrestled it as an epic athletic struggle of the highest stakes. I couldn't help thinking of that thing Falsefied quoted last year and chucklin' at the misplaced impotent RAGE against the WWE model factory. #yesallwomen

Speaking of which, I was hoping Alexa Bliss would be on this show doin' her faerie magicks or whatever.

This post was also running through my head as I watched Tyson Kidd performing with more personality, both overt and subtle, than he ever has in his career (excepting his deadpan alley character on Total Divas), working as a serious wrestling competitor and not a guy taking bumps for a heel midcarder for the first time since I guess ever (I think he challenged Christian for the ECW title once). Confidence is a hell of a thing in wrestling -- Kidd, Natalya, Barrett, Foxy. A major asset when you've got it and big detriment when they grind it out of you.

Along those lines, William Regal is outstanding, but he would not improve the announcing on Raw. No one can. It's a doomed setup. He would be overproduced into some kind of Simon Cowell/Piers Morgan caricature faster than you can say front chancery or "Monday Night Raw rolls on."

I think they are recreating the Daniel Bryan WWE angle to some extent where they're making the Full Sailors yearn for and demand it.

Is Conor O'Brian a rat? No? Then fuck off.

It's unnerving and endearing to see just how much Triple H loves NXT. Remember the ideas where Shane McMahon was going to given '01 WCW or '06 ECW to run as a legitimate offshoot in a chance for Faramir, captain of Gondor, to show his quality? This is like that except he's actually good at it.

I'll never watch an episode of NXT but I'll never miss an NXT special.

Is there any reason they have run both NXT specials the same week as PPVs? It's a lot to cram into a schedule for me at least, and I would think staggering the must see programming would be better for the Network as a whole.

Both specials have occurred at the end of taping cycles, so that could be it. The first special was a dry-run for the opening week of the Network. Not sure if there's any reason this one was scheduled this week.

Triple H said on the Fallout show that the NXT specials are going to be quarterly. So they have a schedule for these NXT specials and I guess WWE PPVs just happen to fall on the same week. If they continue this schedule the next two NXT specials should be the last week of August and the last week of November. The August PPV is Summerslam on the 17th so NXT should be a separate week. The November PPV, Survivor Series, is on the 23rd so I guess the NXT special will be the same week but it will be after the WWE PPV rather than before it.

I wonder if the quarterly specials is in any way a test run to see if that would be a better format than a special event every month.

The European tour could've been a complicating factor this particular time - Zayn and Neville were being used on those shows. The NXT production staff is said to be mostly Full Sail students, but there's probably some people in charge (HHH) who would've been needed on two continents at the same time.

Nah. They couldn't switch to running less PPVs if they wanted to due to international deals. The recent one with SKY in the UK guarantees 12 PPVs a year, and it's probably not the only one. (This is the same reason why TNA still runs the One Night Only shows.) It'd also be really hard selling the network, it'd give people even more reason only to subscribe for the Rumble and WrestleMania if there's only two more PPVs a year.

HHH has mentioned in other formats about not wanting to over expose NXT and how they're still losing money on every show they run. They don't try too hard to make money - last night was the first NXT taping in this building where they actually charged for tickets, and that was more of a crowd control issue - because the goal is to make the show look good instead of profit, and everything does look better when you don't have to think up a PPV card every month. They just don't have that option elsewhere.
