It's, uh, Week 25 of season 5 of NXT Redemption. Four rookies have been eliminated as well as two pros. If you haven't been paying attention, the show has shifted greatly from the regular rigors of the NXT contest. It's now become a kind of awesome permanent purgatory for wayward competitors, the self-contained NXT Universe. TO WIT:

- The show now revolves around the feud between Yoshi Tatsu and Tyson Kidd over Kidd's desecration of Yoshi's action figure. It also usually features a 15 minute Tyson match that is the best wrestling you'll get on WWE TV many weeks. Tonight they were in Calgary so of course he lost to NXT newcomer (and perhaps future pro) Trent Barretta.

- Living god Derrick Bateman returned pure ages ago as an insta-finalist. Then he turned heel and is now feuding with Hornswoggle and Titus O'Neill. AJ has also returned to her NXT roots as Hornswoggle's smiley girlfriend. To help him destroy the love of AJ and Swog, Derrick brought MAXINE(!!!!!!) back from season 3. Maxine has a new hairstyle that makes her look 15 years younger and thus her actual age. Bateman and Maxine have formed a dominant evil couple. ON TOP.

(This means Naomi is now the only season 4'er not being used on TV excepting the late dead Jamie. CONSPIRACY.)

- Matt Striker has come out of retirement along with his strident schoolbell music as a legendary babyface to feud with Chavo Guerrero-orphan Darren Young. Tonight, commentator and endearing uncle William Regal, who feuded with evil JTG (aka "Jimmy the Gimmick") earlier this season (back in APRIL), made the save for Striker.

- The only negative is that Maryse, who had been the central figure of the season, abandoned her hosting duties when she got injured. Ladies and gentlemon.

- The actual NXT competition has not been addressed in weeks because Young always interrupts Striker when he tries to set up that week's wacky challenge for NXT Bucks. Hopefully it never will and NXT just takes its rightful place as the WWECW territory it displaced in the first place. If Johnny Curtis knows what's good for him, he should come back home instead of wasting his time with those Smackdown vignettes.

I guess the main question is: Should I have been watching this all along?

All signs point to yes. And no. But mainly no.

@JoeyStyles
Next week, Season 5 of NXT reaches week 26,twice as long as every other season. Can we just give Titus and Darren WWE contracts and move on?

Maybe Naomi sent the text to Nash. Maybe Naomi is the RAW GM. Maybe Naomi has been on TV all along and we just never knew it, and neither did she.

John, this has been no season 3. Not by a long shot.

I may have appeared on this show, I seem to have been sitting just to the right of the hard camera on the floor (based on what appeared on the tron during the show). Being Canadian I have to wait until Thursday to find out. Derrick Bateman winked at me, love that he and Aksana are willing to try U-S-A chants in foreign countries.

With my NBC Thursday comedies in reruns I've been "watching" this (TV's been on, my attention has been on & off). Titus (big thanks to his pro being the loveable midget) owns the competition & redemption points (whatever they are), Young & Bateman are trying like mofos but nobody seems to give a crap. Regal is, of course, the highlight on commentary (WWE should give the live crowd a break and pip him over the arena speakers) and honestly should replace Booker or Lawler.

It's pretty telling on WWE's views of shitting on hometown people that Kidd can't get a win over fucking Trent Baretta on NXT. Other than CM Punk & I think Cena, who else can get wins in their hometowns lately? Ryder did, although he was snubbed on Raw and had to get it on Superstars. Natalya doesn't even APPEAR on Smackdown, yet as advertised on NXT her retired uncle Bret does as guest GM.

I love AJ & Derrick, like Maxine, don't like Hornswaggle and hate Titus so this NXT feud has me pulled in all directions.

Shut up, Josh!

This will probably bear repeating on the Smackdown thread over the weekend but Kelly Kelly by her own Tweet yesterday was at Smackdown. Apparently, the planned Divas segment was scrapped because...

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
Heath Slater and Sin Cara (not sure which version) put on a botchfest that ended up with them coming out a second time later in the taping and perform the exact same match again.

I do like the irony of Bret Hart being GM but not scheduling Natalya to perform. He must be as bored and disappointed with the "Divas of Doom" as I am.

Adding to the pocketverse nature of this season of NXT, injured Yoshi Tatsu showed up last week in the 20-man Smackdown battle royal, and heel Derrick Bateman returned to face status to celebrate with Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne after their tag title win.

Nous ne nous pouvons pas sortir.
So I just watched all the episodes from June until now based on the first two paragraphs from my (in my own head at least) good message board buddy Justin and wow.

Heel Bateman. An even hotter Maxine. Adorable AJ.

Good times as long as you can skip most of the rookie matches, like Titus/Young's best of 301 series. Young is like 1-7 against Titus in singles but he keeps trying to move that rubber tree. You keep on reaching for that rainbow, D Young!

Grisham and Regal are really killing it on commentary. When Cole was trying to needle Todd to death so bad Todd finally relaxed and fired back I began to wish desperately he'd loosened up years ago. He'd be great on the big two shows and even though he started Coach bad he was good by the time he was demoted and now that he's great and leaving.

Todd: You have a collection of reptiles.
Regal: I also have a collection of phone numbers from horrifying looking women.
Todd: We've all got that.

They never did the whole match again. Right after it ended they did a couple minutes of stuff and then they just before the main they came back and just started doing stuff again.

Part of the Mark Henry/Sheamus opening segment was redone too, but they did it way better. Henry came out and said "I bet Sheamus couldn't do that to me again!"

Heath Slater causing me to not see Kaitlyn is worse than his alleged assault. It was getting a bit late but why didn't they just shorten the post-show dark match a bit? Won't they have to put something in to make up the show's run-time?

How great was AJ that one time she did guest commentary? An unusually normal human being. Plus she talked about being traumatized by the obstacle course.

Yeah the best way to watch is with a fully loaded YouTube replay so you can skip the matches and the constant commercials. Although it's a risk to miss out on Regal's commentary because you never know when he'll say something amusing, charming, surprisingly honest, or about Lance Storm or Haku.

I stopped watching this show because I just didn't care enough about the "contest" and who was going to make the roster, but if they turn this into a show where the goofballs and bottom feeders hang out and wrestle then I'm going to have to start checking this thing out more.

Here's some stats I blantently stole off my buddy HHHutch: In 13 30 Man Rumbles, #30 has never won. Numbers 1-5 have won 4 times. The person who drew #24 or #27 won 7 times. Except for one time (Michaels in '96 drawing 18 )
