In the past, I've written a collumn for SlashWrestling about how nonsensical the WWF's storylines were in the lead up to WrestleMania. And now the nWo joins a long list of recent screw-ups by the WWF, including how they screwed up the "dream" angle of wrestling fans throughout the late '90s, the WCW vs WWF angle. And they dropped the ball on ECW too.

Well they've dropped the ball on the nWo as well. It really doesn't look good when WWF's ratings, gate reciepts, buyrates, etc. are only 'falling slightly' despite all these potential goldmines!

I wouldn't say that the WWF dropped the ball with the NWO. I think blame can be spread around equally to Austin, Kevin Nash's injury, and Scott Hall being a drunk. And don't forget that Hogan came in with the NWO and is now the Undisputed Champion.

I wish they'd just call it the Undisputed World Championship. Who the hell wants to be the WWE Champ? Anyone?

...or just call it the "World Title" and hype its lineage back to 1900 like WCW used to do. I mean there's no reason anymore to differntiate anymore; AWA is dead, and that belt represents the WCW and ECW World Titles, so it's basically the old NWA World Title re-unified.

Of course, this would kill the myth that Vince McMahon invented wrestling, wouldn't it?

And there's a million ways the nWo could have worked. Like perhaps if Vince wasn't such a stooge after he bought out WCW and payed for an extra year of Hogan, Hall, Flair and Nash wages. Then shilled out a bit extra for Goldberg.

This would have meant a WCW / nWo Invasion angle that would have had some credibility to it. Then have ECW 'merge' into the WCW and WWF Hardcore divisions to make it a serious division.

Alternatively, they oculd have made the nWo a credible threat from day one. If people cheered Hogan and had the nWo as a cool heel group, all the better! This would have recreated the atmosphere that the nWo had the 1st time around.

IMO, on both counts, the WWF f*cked up.

Not even Steve Austin could pull a good match out of Scott Hall.

Nash is such a bad wrestler that WWE wouldn't even let him wrestle at WrestleMania.

I don't understand how the nWo could have worked in the first place. Especially when the payoff to any angle is still a wrestling match. Sure WWE dropped the ball -- by bringing these guys back.

I'd say they dropped the ball in terms of long term potential with the nWo. But, No Way Out did a very good buyrate and Wrestlemania X-8 did a record 1.3 million buys. If the nWo hadn't been signed that wouldn't have been the case.

I think both Dreamer & Stasiak are former HC Title-holders.
