Well it was STILL better than I expected it to be, but that either proves how low I can imagine, or I was inhibited by two helpings of Dean Rasmussen's Burrito Casserole, which my wife called "a keeper".

I didn't mind Tenay so much, but the other two have got to go. I was disappointed that Gertner got NO response whatsoever. And I was pretty well convinced Jarrett was going to pull a Von Erich, but instead he jobs to country music. AND he got my props for the night for cutting off that damn song.

I liked it, I don't think its worth ten bucks weekly, but it wasn't bad. The biggest problem with something like this is that they don't have any storylines, and many of the wrestlers are from regional feds that don't get any kind of exposure. Give them time to build angles and personalities, and I'm sure that "we" will enjoy it a little more.

I think the use of "How do you like me now" by Jarrett was more in reference to Toby Keith's song of the same name than Hardcore Holly, since Keith was there and all (or so I read).

Well, I bought the thing cause I found out it was $3.99 here. Dont know why but maybe it was a Richmond redneck rebate. I have to say that this damn thing was the best thing I have seen in at least two months. I thought they did about as good as they could with what they had. Allow me to just be lazy and list what I liked.

1 Easy number one. No jabs or mentions of the WWE other then saying that a wrestler used to be there. If I missed one I was on the way to the fridge for a beer or returning said beer back to the water treatment plant.

2. Mike Teney kicks ass. Give him a Heenan or even Gertner to play off of and we are in business. He knows his shit. It must have been hell for him with Tony and Madden. Put him with the right color guy and we have the next Gorilla- Jessie/Bobby.

3. Yes Jarrett got a ton of air time but he didnt book himself the title.

4. I dont listen to country unless its Hank (JR. or SR.) but I thought that song was cool. Just when it started to get repetitive Jarrett came out. There should have been a guitar shot though. Which leads me to

5. Southern wrestling. Without waving a rebel flag I dont think most people were exposed to this. Just like WWWF was spread into different northern promotions before Vince Jr. came along the NWA was the same way pretty much before Billionaire Ted. I heard Jeff Jarrett on this radio show called Piledriver (check your local listings. Its not bad) and he made the point that although WCW died the WWF didnt just gain their market share. There are still fans that never got into the WWF product and left because WCW became a bad version of the WWF. This post is already too long (for me anyway) to give my NWA history lesson. If anyone want to chime in feel free. It was a different style. I'm talking Blackjack, Paul Jones or even when they had Piper and Slaughter when they were on vacation from the WWF. The Nascar stuff was smart. I used to watch some Nascar cause I grew up here near a major track and I liked the heel Dale (SR. this post should have been titled Seniors and Juniors. Either that or Blatant Overuse of Parenthesis) . I stopped watching because I couldnt handle two sports where it seemed someone died every other week. Anyway, it is a good tie-in.

6. While I am not a workrate freak I like to think I know good stuff when I see it. There was some damn good wrestling going on despite the equally shitty wrestling.

Will I buy this again? This one was a good buy. I was worried when the battle royal started just a little past the one hour mark and I thought I had bought a one hour show with the basic overrun. Turned out it was a good long match and I think was the best way I think they could introduce their roster. Ill decide on buying future ones based on the matches. Right now I got all my mark out value for ECW and former NWA seniors (damn it, he said between more parenthesis) out of the way. The Lawler in me would like to see the ladies but they seem to have got all the leftover Butterfaces although Daffney or whatever they call her still rules. Hell its a PPV they should just show the "TNA". Film some backstage stuff but dont show it to the crowd that might have kids in attendence. This bucks the family entertainment part but again I am just being a perv.

Overall a much better start then I expected and I think it might have a little more than the snowballs chance I thought it would.

Last week, I sent an e-mail to the NWATNA website. After I heard the crap about the Johnsons and read Ed Ferrara's commentary on the site (which seemed to already bury the product), I vowed that I would not buy the PPV. But you know what? I caved in. And guess what else? I actually enjoyed the PPV. A LOT.

It's unfair to try to compare the NWA's effort to the WWE. So let's all just take it for what it is? It's not as bad as it could have been, and judging by the spoilers from another site, the X-title tourney is FRIGGIN' AWESOME.

I had to allow myself to be a mark last night. That doesn't mean that I turned a blind eye to blown spots or bad gimmicks, but I allowed myself to be open enough to at least try to enjoy the action. And again, I thought the PPV was pretty damn good for what it was.

Ed Ferrara MUST GO. He bites. But I'll say this about Mike Tenay-- not once did he insult any of the fans watching, nor did he try to take shots at WWE. And Mike Tenay believed in the product! And you know who else does, enough to bust out a killer f'n promo?

Ricky 'The Dragon" Steamboat.

I know I'm going on and on, but damn. The NWA:TNA needs to be given a chance. As true wrestling fans, let's give the NWA the benefit of a doubt. I mean, hell, it's a lot better than seeing Rikishi vs. Albert WITHOUT A SHIRT ON! UGHHHH!!!

So come on everybody! Let's jump on this bandwagon (at least for a while...)

Don West = Mark Madden Lite

Ed Ferrara. News flash, pal. Whatever look you were going for, you missed! And by the way, Raven and Godfather called...THEY WANT THEIR GIMMICKS BACK!

I know there's some folks who'd rather puncture their own eardrums and gouge out their eyes before sitting through anything involving Mike Tenay, but he was the only tolerable thing on the announce team.

How long before we get a special handicap match between Principal Richard Pound, on loan from Stampede Wrestling, vs. The Johnsons? And what kind of stipulation do we put in place? Make it a circumcision match? "Loser Gets A Vasectomy" match?

Or, have the team of Richard Pound and Jeff Jarrett vs. The Johnsons? That gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "slap nuts".

(However, when the inevitable Johnsons vs. Rainbow Express match occurs, for the love of God, PLEASE let Joel Gertner sit in and do guest commentary. I miss those dirty little limericks, I really do.)

Why is it that midgets are entertaining as hell on WWE television (Joe C.'s guest appearance on RAW a couple of years back comes to mind, along with an Al Snow midget match) but are just excrutiating on TNA?

And isn't it sad when one of the best moments of the night is a NON-WRESTLER (Toby Keith) executing a killer suplex on the boss' son?

I couldn't agree with you anymore RKMtwin. I thought the first match was AWESOME. The midget
was intresting. I could have done withouth the women and the johnsons. I forgot how good of a heel Jarret really is. It was a solid show and i look forward to next weeks show. Especially that main event which i hear is worth price of admission alone.

Call NARAL, after watching last night's show, I have a feeling there'll be new calls to ban abortions.

One decent match--the Junior boy's spotfest.

The worst-booked battle royal I've even seen. "Hey, here a good idea: Let's have Jeff Jarrett in the ring alone for four of the first eight minutes.

That Toby Keith song was worse than "Wind Beneath my Ring".

Yet, he was the most impressive wrestler in the Battle Royal.

Midgets are just creepy. It was like watching a four-year-old beat up Emimen, which normally would be a good thing, but it just made me feel bad for seeing it. It was like watching mentally-retarded amateur porn--you just hate that you even saw it.

They should changer their names from "The Johnsons" to "The Michelin Men".

Sinister MInister's gimmick worked because he managed guys who didn't look lide legitimate Deeevil worshippers. He's being wasted here as Paul Bearer Jr.

God, what a skanky-lookin' buncha wimmin folk.

Did anyone else spit out their drinks when they kept saying "Total Nonstop Action" during the geriatric parade of former NWA people?

And who the hell is Jackie Fargo? At first, I thought they dug up and reanimated the corpse of Jerry Clower.

Ricky Steamboat sure looks a lot like Don Ho.

How great was it to have the top three names in the company start the show by talkkng about how stupid the main even is? Hey, they were right, too!

Did Tenay take the gig because he knew there was no way he'd look bad in between Don West and Ed Ferrara?

And did Mortimer Plumtree look like Charles Nelson Reilly playing Jim Cornette.

Speaking of Corny, who else wants to spit on Ferrara now?

When the bimbo interviewed the midget, did you think "Oh my God, Tazz fell into a trash compacter!"?

Were the other matches on the show that forgettable, or am I just blanking them out because they sucked so much?

Sheesh.

The only thing more amazing than how bad that show was is the stunning generousity of the folks on the internet who are desperate for anything to root for against WWE. The show sucked. It was worse than the first XFL game. I give it three months, tops, unless they manages some kind of PR stunt, like having somebody shot dead in the ring.

Come on now Rudy, you usually sound reasonably non-pessimistic in your posts, so why the about face for a show that wasn't as bad as you thought?

The first match was great, and it set the tone for an even greater series of matches next week. I didn't dig the Johnsons' match, but the York/Matthews vs. Dupps contest was good for what it was (too short).
The main event was done so that the live crowd (and us) could see the mostly new guys/gimmicks. Before last night I didn't know who Apolo was, and now I am impressed with him. Ditto with the Wall's new gimmick, and I have to admit that it was good to see Buff Bagwell play Koko B. Ware to Jeff Jarrett's Ted Dibiase. The big guys who will be getting pushes were showcased the right way, and a name that isn't too old or met with too many groans (Shamrock) got to be champion. Jarrett was awesome in every promo last night, and he will make a fine champion.

All in all, I enjoyed the first show and the second show will be even better (thank you Jerry for bringing back Daffney).

Only one question remains: Since Slick Johnson reffed a clean match between the Johnsons and Psi/Storm, why would Alicia give him money? I am baffled here, but then again anything to get the former Ryan Shamrock on my TV isn't a bad thing...it's a great thing.

Has Don West ever called a wrestling match before? The last time I saw him, he was shilling baseball cards for the Shop at Home network.

My thoughts on the PPV:

- Production values were not bad for a startup.

- The legends opening dragged, but made sense if they were trying to fix the ring.

- Scott Hall is still funny.

- Whatever they paid Rick Steiner and Buff Bagwell, it wasn't for a whole lot of work.

- The 6-man tag match was awesome. I didn't know any of the guys, neither did my friends, but it was fun.

- Main event was okay. Malice seems to flabby and not big enough to be believable as a monster.

- And as Rex said, "It wouldn't be an indy show without a midget match."

It's not an about face. That show last night was everything that I don't like in professional wrestling. It was indeed as bad as I said. It was so bad that I may have set a personal record for the amount of typos in one post.

The first match I'll agree, was decent, but still seriously flawed.

It's obvious that NWA TNA doesn't have any agents as talented as Michaal Hayes or Pat Patterson. Even the first match was something of a cluster, with the guys just moving from spot to spot so fast that the crowd couldn't even manage a "holy shit" chant. It didn't really tell a story until the faces screwed up and took each other out. Still, had they ended the show with it, I would have felt better about the show as a whole.

The ceremony was filler and crap. It was more "Total Nonstop Arthritis" than action. They could have done better with a well-produced video package, and then have the legends come out on the stage all at once. The way they did it, it was like watching a compilation of Undertaker run-ins from 1999.

The midgets were creepy. Sorry, I just feel that way. Never want to see 'em again.

The Dupps were like the Godwinns, without the sterling wit. And they did that gimmick in Alabama, for christ's sake! That match was nothing compared to previous times I've seen both teams.

I can't believe how many people are saying that the battle royal was well-booked. It was a mess. I know Buff is an idiot, but why toss him out early, and let indy guys or Lash Leroux stay in for a long time. I mean, they paid him, why not get a few minutes of onscreen time out of him. It was intriguing that they didn't put Hall, Jarrett, or Steiner in the final, but that made the final two a match of two competing guys with no charisma.

And during the battle royal there sure were a lot of guys standing around doing nothing for long periods of time. At times it reminded me of the Refigerator Perry boxing match.

There were some promising things in the show, but they were overshadowed by the overwhelming awfulness.

Scott Hall seemed to have some star power, and might benefit from stealing Sandman's entering from the crowd gimmick (minus the beer). It would have been funnier if the T shirt he was wearing was from the Gold Club in Atlanta.

The guys in the opening match could really shine, if they're given the chance to work one-on-one matches that are well-laid out.

Gertner and Mitchell should be given more screen time.

Don West and Ed Ferrara shouldn't.

They have some good, fresh talent, but too much was buried in the battle royal.

And after hearing that Toby Keith song, I have two thoughts: Peter Jennings is a wonderful anchor. For the sake of music, Keith should give up singing and wrestle full-time.

The NASCAR guys made me feel like I was watching an extended Stacker 2 Commercial.

K Krush has the potential to be a top heel. But not if his feud is with Brian Christopher. Weren't they in matches together in the WWF before they were were ejected?

The camera work was poor, but that's something that can improve over time. They really need to tweak the production side. They have the chance to try some really different things with camera placement, but last night showed nothing new. The static shot from the hard camera was too wide, poorly lit, and the camera kept shifting it's white balance.

But on the whole, it was a sub-Thunder mess. Only good for the deeply-entrenched McMahon hater.

Actually, I've seen episodes of Thunder with better six-man cruiser matches.

Later, Rudy

Edited for nagging errors that made no sense.
