Here (sportsillustrated.cnn.com) is Stewart Mandel's post-spring top 25. I don't care that it's Sports Illustrated and usually those guys are nuts (see Oregon State: 2001 National Champs - Ha!) because it's all about the COLLEGE FOOTBALL, baby!

1 - Georgia
2 - USC
3 - Oklahoma
4 - LSU
5 - Miami
6 - Texas
7 - Ohio State
8 - Florida State
9 - Minnesota (!)
10 - Florida
11 - Michigan
12 - Kansas State
13 - Iowa
14 - West Virginia (!)
15 - California
16 - Clemson
17 - Maryland
18 - Utah
19 - Wisconsin
20 - Virginia
21 - Missouri
22 - TCU
23 - Auburn
24 - Oregon
25 - Toledo

Sadly, no Washington on the list, but they really don't deserve to be on there since they lost their QB, stud WR, best DT, and best CB among others from a team that wasn't very good anyway. Hopefully they'll get their offense in order and win eight games this year.

I'm surprisd to see no Va. Tech in the Top 25. As for the shock over W. Virginia, remember the new landscape: No Miami or Va Tech in the Big East, Pitt lost Fitzgerald, and Boston College never starts strong. That means a West Virginia team that played well the last 7 weeks of the season should win the Conference, and probably means Top 15 out of default.

I'd forgotten about the ACC/Big East realignments. That means he's got VaTech FIFTH at best in the ACC, behind Miami, FSU, Clemson, and Maryland.

Or sixth, unless Virginia has seceded from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

If I'm not mistaken, I might be, but it appears that the ACC leads the way with FIVE teams on that top 25 list. Not just a basketball conference anymore

Here is espn.com's poll by Ivan Maisel.

1. USC
2. LSU
3. Oklahoma
4. Georgia
5. Miami
6. Florida State
7. Michigan
8. Maryland
9. Texas
10. Iowa
11. California
12. West Virginia
13. Clemson
14. Utah
15. Ohio State
16. Oregon State
17. Tennessee
18. Auburn
19. Missouri
20. Virginia
21. Florida
22. Nebraska
23. Toledo
24. Purdue

And if we ever get a playoff, some of us in the ACC might just even care!

Always a basketball conference.

I like that first the best because it has Florida the highest Come on, maybe LSU and Georgia will finish higher (even though we will beat Georgia again) but Tennessee and Auburn? Nuh uh.

No way the Longhorns make the Top 10 with all of their losses plus the fact they didn't lose the one person they should've(Mack the fool).

Tennessee? Two words: rebuilding year. We'll be lucky to crack 8 wins - in other words, no way we're top 25 material. Not yet.

I stumbled across it a few weeks ago, so I just looked at his column archive. That's lame that they wouldn't update their link to the newer one.

Not to mention the hiring of defensive guru Greg Robinson! Maybe OU can put 100 on them this year.

Man, no Notre Dame, Penn State and Virgina Tech, color me shocked. After watching the Irish embrasse themselves all season, I expect some immediate changes coming if it happens again. Remember what Dave Chappel said "Don't be the first black anything." Sorry, Ty, I love ya,but the alumini at Notre Dame can't take much more. Penn State's alumini is starting to get on Joe Paterno's case, so he may be gone even before the season begins.

USC is going to be a major contender and I am not looking forward to another USC/ND beatdown. Of course, ND has beaten them before with little or nothing on the field, so we will see. The West and South got a lot of love this year. I am even shocked that Miami isn't the traditional number 1 going into the year. Of course, the ACC got stronger, so we will see if they can actually play against good teams which would be a surpise since them and the other Florida teams avoid big teams unless its home like the plague.

It is way too early to tell and just by looking at the list, I can see at least four of the top ten going down withing a week or two. I do like these lists espically SI. So, when their number 1 loses in the first week, they look like complete morons. Always like to see that in the ultra-smug SI college section.

No team coming off a 3-9 season, its third losing season in the past four years, should ever break a preseason Top 25. We may now have both a running game and a passing game in the same season, but for the most part this is a pretty young, small team. I'd say I'd be happy with a .500 season, but a) that'd be a damned dirty lie, and b) we only have 11 games on schedule, and 5-6 still looks more plausible than 6-5. We've got 4 out of the 5 ranked Big Ten teams on schedule.

Alumni have been on JoePa's case for the last five years. The truth of the matter is, with all he's given to and done for the University in the past 54 years, they're going to let him leave on his own terms. While there may be whispers that this recruiting class may be his last shot at a national title, JoePa's not leaving until he's ready. He's handed the bulk of the playcalling over to his offensive coordinator and QBs coach, and the rest of the staff does most of the recruiting trips. He probably realizes his tenure is coming to an end, and he's gradually handing over the reins. But to think he's going to step down between spring practice and the fall season is pretty inconceivable. If any Paterno should leave the coaching ranks before the fall, it should be Jay "My passing game ignores the middle of the field" Paterno.

Ohio State still being ranked as high as they are (#13) is surprising, considering they just had a majority of their defense and some key offensive guys drafted. But Maisel took Nebraska out of his preseason Top 25? Aw, come on! Mike Callahan's West Coast Offense - in Nebraska? That premise has got to be worth that #22 spot alone! ;)

Amen. That's why every coaching vacancy has people waiting with baited breath for Jay to get the job. Too bad everybody else realizes how untalented he is.

The good news is that he's away from recruiting (ex QB and current WR coach Mike McQueary is now recruiting coordinator) so we can't have another Chad Henne debacle (and JayPa is clearly one of the big reasons why Henne didn't come to PSU)

.500 is a good prediction for the team this year (well, 5-6 or 6-5), but a few games could go either way. Throw in some players with huge potential and an offensive line that might actually protect somebody this year (Galen Hall's zone blocking scheme works better for them than Ganter's schemes last year) and it lays a good foundation.

And Joe's constantly said that he doesn't want to leave until he wins another national championship. The pessimist in me says that it looks like he's going to die as the head coach at Penn State.

This is my take on Ty at this point: I'm having fond memories of the Anti-Christ Gerry Faust, and even some non-violent reactions towards Bob Davies. The USC game this year might be the Miami game of '85.
Miami has to take a slight hit in the polls because they lost 6 guys in the first round, and no one has any faith in their QB. I despise Miami, but they did have home and home series with Washington and Penn State in the past few years, so they have gone and played tough teams non-conference. And, didn't Florida State play a home and home with Notre Dame the past two years? And I think they are in one with Colorado now. Non Conference last year for Florida State had Notre Dame, Colorado, Miami and Florida. I think on paper going into a season, that might look a bit difficult. You also have to remember, not many sane teams are going to blow a home date that could be used for an easy win against Rutgers on a game where they would be a home dog against Miami or Florida State.

Riiight, because Florida ONLY played 8 ranked teams last year. They ONLY had the fifth hardest schedule in the nation last year. ONLY the hardest schedule that any of the ranked teams played.
