My first post on the new TN.. sorry Slashwrestling board. HEY
After reading most people vs. Prof. van Snoot, I came up with a little thing. But first, I don't like Hogan, but give him a year and let him have his last WM at x9 as to end with dignity (passing the torch.)
What is more important is this: Most people (even CRZ) seem to be dissapointed with the WWF right now, they cannot do anything that's good anymore. Granted some of the stuff they do does suck. However, the point is that wrestling fans (as everybody else) tend to be nostalgic. We remember great fueds like Austin vs. McMahon or the first two fueds between Austin and Rock (IC and World title). We also remember "smaller" things: 1996's Austin 3:16 at KotR, Jericho's first WWF appearence or the early TLC matches. Well, you ask, so what?
The point is here that the participants in these great events in the past are now (most of them) bigger and more over stars than they were then. So, when we think back of those fueds, we think of the participants (and their over-ness) as they are today. Would you see Rock and Austin fued over the IC belt today? No, you wouldn't. Now, we see RVD, Regal etc. who are lower on the chain of over-ness at this point than Austin/Rock are now, which for most people means that the IC belt has been demoted.
On the other hand, fueds that are easily forgotten mostly had guys in them that aren't over now. Anyone remember that "The Godfather successfully defended the Intercontinental Championship against Goldust" at Backlash 1999? Are they over now? Well, you know the answer.
So, keep in mind that nostalgia plays a big role in how you percieve the current world of wrestling - especially when you dislike it.
I think you certainly have a point about nostalgia coloring the way we remember past angles, but there's also some cause/effect that you may have backwards (maybe not). I don't think it's so much that someone would remember Austin/Rock fondly because Austin and Rock are still popular than Austin and Rock are popular today because they had a great feud and built better characters then. Conversely, Godfather and Bull Buchanan aren't popular today because they didn't have those matches and angles to make them beloved in the first place.
To take an angle based on a series of matches that has come up on the board recently, the Booker/Benoit Best of Seven series is regarded as a lot better, in general, than Regal and Edge battling over the IC title and the Power of the Punch for several months prior to this Wrestlemania. I think nostalgia will eventually build up Booker/Benoit to be a bit better than it was, but it was also a well received angle at the time because it produced some great TV matches and had a pretty solid angle that related to them. Edge/Regal, on the other hand, had matches that produced a lot of mixed reactions and the feud itself didn't have that great of an arc, with Edge being portrayed as having been pushed too far and on the verge of suspension one show, then back to normal the next. It didn't really build to a finish, either.
A personal example is the return of Mr. Perfect. I was really looking forward to his WWF comeback, but I've been kind of disappointed with it. I don't think that it's purely nostalgia that makes me remember his previous WWF matches and angles so fondly - they really were great. And while my disappointment is partly based on what used to be, I think it's also a very real factor that his matches today are being rushed and don't have any kind of flow and he's got no direction - he forgets about Austin for an entire month before mentioning it and it immediately goes away, and he gets a mini-angle where he claims to have a perfect record after a loss, but then goes on a clean losing streak that ends any chance of that continuing.
I totally agree with you on the Hagan factor. I dislike seeing him in some way s just as much as the next smart. Taking the heat away from younger wrestlers doesnt make me happy. However a lengend like hogan deserves a proper sendoff and the ponly way to have that was in the wwf. Imagine you never heard of hagan agaion in ma9nstream wrestling and the last you would have seen of him was the embarrassing Bash atr the beach incedent with russo(not what happened with booker winnning the belt, that was gold). Hoagn should remain on tv for a year, ahve his retairment match next year but so help me god if he lasts past WM x-9, then im afraid we have a problem.
I should say if McMahon lets him stay past X-9. I dont think hes that stupid. I mean Vince must know that wrestling does not revolve around hogan now rihgt. Hogans good if they put him working with everyone on the smackdown roster.
Once the match started the giant looked high and low, but he couldnt find Shane.Which Way did GO?
Ric Flair aligning with the nWo disrespects history? History lesson: France and Britain hated each other. But an new upstart nation started rising to be the powerhouse in Europe, Germany. Since neither France nor Britain wanted that, they aligned.
