One of my friends just showed me this, and the facts presented on this page make it seem like reparations would be something easy to do. There are SO many problems with the opinions on that page. For example, how do they decide which African Americans get which amount of money? Should those with slave ancestors get it and those without get none? Just to use a real life example, I have a very good black friend who's family are millionares, and another very good black friend who's parents just divorced and who's family is having trouble with money, who gets more money in that case? What about black families who moved here 20 years ago, do they get money soley because of their race? Also, if this was included in taxes, who would pay it, white people only? Well the percentage of people who owned slaves in the South was miniscule, should their ancestors be forced to pay? What about my Mom's side of the family, who is white but moved here after the Civil War? What about my Dad's side of the family, who lived up North and fought for the North and died for the North, which several of my ancestors did. Should just Southerners pay? I have friends whose ancestors actually did own slaves, but how could such a small percentage of the population pay 8 trillion dollars? Also, if African Americans get reparations, I want some too. My Grandmother is an Italian American and growing up people wouldn't hire her based soley on that fact. They wouldn't hire her and would call her a Wop, a Dago, a Giuena (sp?) and other horrible names. I think I deserve some benefits for my Grandmother's horrible treatment also.

| #3 Posted on 8.4.03 0931.47 | Reparations are a horrible idea for way too many obvious reasons I won't get into, but they'll never actually happen in a million years, so I find it diffucult to get that worked up over it.

This is silly. Your grandmothers story is no different than the story of every immigrant that came to America VOLUNTARILY (key word). This is how it works here - you come here, work hard, go through a lot of shit, so your children and grandchildren can live the American life (and a great life it is too, thank you Great-Grandparents). This is also why I think Affirmative Action for Latinos and Asians is a big mistake.
Your grandmother got paid for her work. If she didn't want to work she didn't have to. These are two huge things. Reparations aren't based on "we went through horrible treatment." They're based on "we didn't get paid for our work, and we didn't have a choice of whether to do it or not."
I agree there are a million problems with the practicalities of reparations. But if this country decided in principle that something is right and just, it has a way of working out the thorny details. I think if anything ever came of the reparations movement, you wouldn't see (as opponents like to paint things) every white person, or the government, cutting a fat check to every black person. It would much more likely be something along the lines of, an apology for slavery, and scholorships, low-interest loans, and stuff of that nature being set up. Which of course, we have already.
This is the biggest argument against reparations in my book - we already have them. I think a sincere, meaningful apology is really the only thing left.

Dear President Bush,
OlFuzzyBastard and I, waffleking, will be sueing the United States government for 3 trillion dollars for compensation for the genocide of our ancestors and the theft of their land. We will accept our 3 trillion dollars in the 20 year payment plan option as done with lottery winnings.
If this is too much, we will be willing to settle this out of court for $200 billion, 2 dune buggies, 10 front row tickets to Wrestlemania XX, 3 Patriot missiles (I'm gonna have a kick ass 4th of July party), Mick Foley's car, and a couple states of the union (not any of those crappy ones either like West Virgina or Arkansas).
Thank you, waffleking

i only see one big flaw in that letter....
lottery payment plans are 25 year payments, not 20 ^_^
