I just saw a commercial on TNN advertising them as the new channel just for men but then it said "due to a ruling in ny we can't say our name. %#$*!" Looks like they may have lost to Spike Lee or atleast have to hold off on their new name.

Hmmm...those must be new. Last night on Raw they ran the cartoon ads (Gary the Rat, Ren & Stimpy, Stripperella), but with "The New TNN" added on to the end. No mention of Spike TV.

Yes, last week's ruling made them postpone the name change. They're currently appealing the decision on the name, but are still going ahead with the programming changes. The commercial is just a bit humor about the situation.

I for one am glad the whole "We've got POP!" nonsense is over.

Spike TV or not, they won't be the 'first' network for men ... any claims to that are refuted by the fact that there's been a "Men TV" channel north of the 49th for almost two years now. All the "COPS" reruns you can handle!

Yeah, it ended like a YEAR ago.

I believe the hearing is still scheduled for Monday.

I just read that TNN is expected to lose $16 million this week alone because of the court order.
It never ONCE crossed my mind to associate the director of "Do the Right Thing" with the TV network. There was nothing to imply it in any of the advertising.
I never thought I would see anything more ridiculous than the WWF being forced by the panda folks to change their name...until THIS came along.

Mr. Lee, I like your movies and all, but get over yourself.

I think the ironic part of all of this is that should Viacom be allowed at some point to take the Spike TV name for the network, it's now going to be much more associated with Spike Lee than it ever would have been before all of this lawsuit nonsense. In the last week there have been articles everywhere putting the two of them in the same thought, something that surely wasn't happening to that many people beforehand. Now when I hear Spike TV, I think of the director. He better hope he wins this case, or he's going to have created the very thing his ego caused him to try to avoid.

and maybe I should open up my sensitive side/but really, the sensitive side sucks./I've been there./You can only imagine the kinds of sweaters they make you wear.

NWA:TNA - I swear Russo is about a week away from making me pull this link.

Men TV know this. They are trying to get Spike TV removed from Canada if they go through with the "Network for Men" aspect, because it'll be in direct competition with a Canadian equivilent. So enjoy "Velocity" while you can!

I think this may be a money grab for Spike. No, I don't know why the hell he would need the money. But then again, he wouldn't be the first celebrity to blow all his money and be in need of cash.

If it wasn't for his celebrity status, this would have all the markings of someone looking to force a company into a money settlement just so they don't have to be tied up with the courts (and not have some jackass ruin their big money promotion).

Why is ViaCom so stuck on SpikeTV as a name anyway? I mean, they already have channels marketed at a young / male demographic. Why not leverage off those? Let em give you some examples...

I'm pretty sure ViaCom already own BETV (Black Entertainment TV). I would guess that most of their viewers are young African-American males, a subset of what they want to get with the new-new TNN. They also mentioned in focus groups that some guys claimed that the new channel is for me; so why not MeTV (Men's Entertainment TV)?

Another trick often used to create a brand-name is to take the brand of an existing product and drop an "X" in there for "Xtreme". Like Vince did when he created the XFL. UPN is aimed at a young, male demographic; why not UPN-X. Or if it'll end up being Mtv for young males, Xtv or something. A big red "X" with the letters of whatever brand they're co-opting through the middle.

3 examples I thought of in less than a minute. Yeah, I know they're lame, but then again I'm not being paid to come up with brand names for ViaCom - ViaCom has a heap of such individuals on their payroll. And I'm sure "SpikeTV" was neither the first nor only thing they brainstormed. Why not pick another name?

Wow, I didn't think he could give a more wooden performance than he did in an ad for a Plainville plumber... and that was in a newspaper. The end was worth it, I must say.
