Here's a surprising move, in that they're putting in Field Turf in mid-season:

http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/reiss_pieces/

What exactly is there issue, that they can't get grass to grow there? It can be done in worse climates. Regardless, it certainly seems to be a necessary move.

EDIT: This is an interesting quote at the end:

News of the new field was first reported today by Patriots Football Weekly, the team's official newspaper, and was previously reported by NESN. The Patriots have had a natural grass playing field at Gillette since the facility opened in 2002.

If it was "first" reported by Patriots Football Weekly, how could it have been "previously" reported by NESN?

That's an interesting visual with the field half scraped off.

I think the field turf is popular amongst the players for outdoor games.

As long as it isnt like the turf the put in the Edward Jones Dome that lets players leave a trail of blue dust behind them with every step, it should look great on TV.

NESN had the story a few weeks ago, then word came down that NFL rules prohibited changing the surface in the middle of the season, thus it actually occurring does qualify as them breaking a new story.
The reason they can't grow grass there: They filmed a movie during a 2 week period where the Patriots didn't have a home game, they play soccer on it, and they held concerts on the field after the season began.
No coincidence that they are doing this mid-season this season when the offense has been far more dynamic on the fake stuff on the road than on the sand/mud at home, is there?

If you're talking about the pellets that the players kick up, I think that's common to all field turf, because those damn pellets are in every field I play flag football on (including Qwest Field), and they get EVERYWHERE.

It seems like several years in a row that Gillette Stadium has looked really bad by the end of the year. Not to mention the times where the team choose not to cover the field before a rainstorm or snowstorm. A suspicious person would point out that it always seems to happen when Indianapolis comes to town.

Speaking of dirt, they just signed a QB (sports.espn.go.com) as old as it.

Pellets? Is that what that stuff is? Always looks like a cloud of blue dust anytime somebody drags a toe or makes a slide. Annoying as hell on the tv, or at least it is to me.

Generally it's pulverized tires or shoes. It's used to help the fake blades of grass stand up.

Watch that game last sunday reminded me of the old Fulton County stadium in Atlanta.

Pittsburgh's new stadium needs to due something about its grass too.

Poor Ficken; not only has he missed a bunch, but he gets 'em blocked today now too. I really think O'Brien went for the FG to try to inspire some confidence in Ficken.
