Nintendo of Japan announced that they're working on a 3DS, a DS with 3D capabilities without the need for glasses. It will be compatible with all DS & DSi games. No clue if the older games will support the 3D technology. I was expecting to hear about a new DS at E3, but instead of the rumored HD display, GameCube graphics engine, and (maybe) motion controls, they took it in a whole other direction.
I'm baffled by Nintendo's thought process here. Instead of giving everyone what they want, i.e. an HD handheld, they jumped on the 3D gaming bandwagon. I was skeptical of 3D gaming before, even when Sony trumpeted it, but with Nintendo on board I've gotta say this really gives it a brand new viability. It's already been proven that people will buy whatever Nintendo sells in the way of handhelds, so you know this will be a success. Once again, as with the Wii, they're taking the road not yet traveled in order to have something that's not so much positioned as a competitor to the competition but as a mainstream alternative. 3D in the movies is a huge success with Joe Public, so I'm surprised I didn't see this coming. Score another point for casual gamers.
The most surprising part? It will be available before the end of this fiscal year. I've gotta say, a 3D Metroid game would look pretty slick. But do we really need Zelda in 3D rather than in high def?| Promote this thread! | | thecubsfan

I have trouble believing it'll actually add much to most games, but after the Wii, you only need it to work well in a couple games to get people to buy the systems.

Yes that was 15 years ago (I know a guy who had one!), but I think the point remains that you should never assume that a company will continue to do as well or as poorly as they have in the past, regardless of the quality of the product.

Yeah, I was one of the few and the not-so proud who actually bought the Virtual Boy back then, and it still stings... But 3D is such a craze in theaters right now that there's huge built-in interest from the general public for more. As long as that doesn't die down, I can't see it being anywhere near as big of a disaster this time around. | SchippeWreck

Which is why I'm thinking soon enough we will get official word of a new portable system from Nintendo.
Well, this is one time I'm glad I'm right! And like I said in that thread, right on time for their usual portable development schedule.
We'll see if my other prediction comes true; that they release the next-generation of Pokemon at the same time.

That's....incredible. That is absolutely incredible. They're trying to slit their competitors throats with this one.....and if that video is any indicator then they got a good chance of doing so.

The real trick is to make the video look dimensional without moving the screen at all. Autostereoscopic LCD screens do exist (I want to say Sharp makes them) so this isn't a major leap, and in fact Intel had a large scale demo at this year's CES of glasses free #D tvs.
Also, I believe the 2DS will only have one 3D screen, possibly to keep costs down.
