PWINsider says Cena was injured last night. (pwinsider.com)

CENA INJURED
By Mike Johnson on 2012-09-17 10:15:36 John Cena posted a photo on Twitter of a badly swollen left ankle, noting that he rolled it very early on in his Night of Champions PPV main event against WWE champion CM Punk. The fact he was that hurt and still worked a great 30 minute bout against Punk is a hell of a testament to Cena as a performer.
We will try and update Cena's condition but have no received any early word that he's expected to miss dates.

Wrestled 30 minutes on an injured ankle? Boy, that makes Kaitlyn look even more like a helpless crybaby.

I forgot who on the board said it but Vince has to realize that crowds are smarter now and more vocal in picking who they want to cheer for, despite the writers forcing certain Superstars face/heel alignments down our throat each week. What worked for Hogan in the 80's doesn't work for Cena today.

Ziggler wins the crowd over Orton (Orton actually couldn't take how vocal the crowd is about how much they disliked him, so he decides to flip them off during the match. He just doesn't learn). Punk is doing all he can manage to get the full brunt of fans disapproval these past few weeks, but he's attempting it against such a vanilla pandering kiss ass opponent that the fans (especially the older male fans) just can't shut off their BS meter and fully accept Cena.

WWE Writer: Hey to guarantee Cena wins the crowd over why don't we align Punk with Heyman for no real explicable reason, and we started a allegiance with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer research foundation. We could make a few hundred Cena "Rise above Cancer" shirts and have Cena sport the shirt and pink wristband! This can't lose.

Common Sense WWE Writer: Won't some of the fans think we are forcing the issue and turn on Cena from another obvious attempt to make him the ultimate babyface? Why not have more of the face wrestlers wear a pink ribbon or some form of pink to their attire when they come out so Cena's pandering doesn't look so obvious to the smarter fans.

Vince: I love it! They wouldn't boo Cena wearing pink cause that would be like cheering for Cancer. This could also help my wife's election chances. What a maneuver! Get the graphic design department on those shirts now dammit. Common Sense Writer YOU"RE FIIIIIREEEEDD........Fuck You.

Good match though between Cena and Punk. I love the multiple finish matches when done right and it was done excellently.

I feel very scared for Disneyland right now. Seriously Team No!va-Kane aka Team No Chants in Hell aka Hell No aka Team Big Red Goat Face aka Team Friendship is in a whole other class compared to the other angles in this company right now.

I thought this was a really good show. Better in all the ways that SummerSlam disappointed. Great crowd, good wrestling, and entertaining crowd-pleasing stuff like the tag title match and the battle royal. It was also the best-announced show in what must be years, as JBL was outstanding as always and he allowed Cole to slide back into the babyface PBP spot they'd be wise to transition him into with the goodwill and extraordinary circumstances of what happened with Jerry Lawler.

Cena/Punk was easily the second best match they've had together after MITB, even with the contrived draw finish. Going in I thought they were just going to do a DQ, so at least they put a little thought into it; Punk's shocked elation when he was handed the belt back almost made it all worth it. It was so strange, in a good way, to see a match where Punk wrestled as Cena's physical equal and even dominated him at times. 30 minutes, lots of nearfalls, Cena doing a tope, Punk approximating a moonsault -- really looking forward to seeing them in Hell in a Cell.

Orton/Ziggler was excellent match #2. They've had terrific chemistry in shorter TV matches, and this time they had PPV-length time to have an even better version of their usual really good match.

Sheamus/Del Rio was also the best match they've had. I roll my eyes at Sheamus as unstoppable Irish Cena nice man 2.0, but he works really hard. I'm reasonably sure this is the longest feud in the history of professionalized wrestling since it's been going on since the night after Wrestlemania, so hopefully we can move on. I see Ziggler banking it pretty soon, I'm going to guess after he hires Wade Barrett to beat down Sheamus.

Kane and Bryan are terrific and WWE has lucked into the unlikeliest best thing. The crowd loves them, they're great in their interplay, Bryan has a great mind for creative break-up spots in their matches, and the whole thing makes no sense and is incredible because of it. Who cares if two wrestlers don't like each other? Well, Dr. Shelby does, and AJ does too now for some reason, as they've dropped the part where she was putting the screws to Bryan and she's now going to great expense to get them to get along. All four of them in that skit were great. This is delightful stuff that is hopefully only going to get better from here.

U.S. fourway was good and showed what a great rollercoaster ride Mysterio & Sin Cara vs. Bryan & Kane matches could potentially be. Battle royal was a fun sprint through some good action spots and the best possible winner. Everything on this show except the women's match was good, and Eve getting the title was still a lot better than trying to have Kaitlyn wrestle a real match. I love WWE, for 24 hours until I have to slog through Raw again.

Man, too bad they're not on the West Coast and could actually send Kane and Bryan to Disneyland.

To be fair, though, Bridgeport is exactly the same thing.

I liked this show. The Fatal Four Way was good once it got going. Very sloppy in the beginning, and not just Sin Cara. I would not have had any physical contact between Rey and Cara, but that's me.

Uh, not to rain on lotjx's parade since it would seem Eve personally came to his house and threw his kitten in the lawn-mower, but I think Eve deserves to be on top. She's also getting media exposure outside WWE, which is always a big deal.

This weird Bryan/Kane alliance seems to be working. I thought Truth and Kofi were doing a fine job as Champions, but when you have something clicking with the audience like HellNo, in a company where so much creatively is not clicking right now, you have to run with it.

JBL was okay, despite making all kinds of shit up.

I like Del Rio and think he has good matches, but obviously they're keeping Seamus strong for reasons unclear to me. So he can lose the belt to Dolph Ziggler, who never wins matches?

Is it just me or does Dolph Ziggler never win matches? What is the logic behind jobbing him to Orton, who fails wellness tests and is leaving to make a movie? You'd think once he won MITB, they'd have started protecting him, but he loses staggering, Jericho-like percentages of high profile bouts. Even to Jericho. As great an athlete as Dolph is, the audience is still conditioned to expect him to lose all the big ones. They had an awesome match, though.

The Cena/Punk finish was wonky, but sometimes you need wonky. It was this or a run-in. Punk really worked this match like he is Cena's peer, which was great to see. I have no complaints until RAW sucks again.

DIBIASE came back in that match? I didn't even notice he was there! Truly an auspicious return for young Teddy Jr.!

If that doesn't prove my "Let's put all of our losers that we can't find anything to do with in one match" point, I don't know what does.

Colour me impressed this was a much better PPV then I was expecting.
I do like how Punk did everything under the sun to try and get booed and still couldn't achieve it against Cena.

Add me to the list of thumbs up for JBL the commentator, which I think he does better than anything else he ever did in wrestling, with the possible exception of the clothesline from hell. And he busted out the two-step on his way out from the back. I don't know how much of his patter was bogus (I think he overdid it with the callback references, which you can excuse for him being out of practice), but can anyone see Lou Thesz as the originator of Cesaro's neutralizer? A move like that would have got you arrested in 40% of wrestling towns in the 50's.

I noticed it was a double pin as soon as the ref started counting the main event finish, it's unfortunate because WWE has conditioned us that none of the big deal guys win on anything but a big finisher, and even Punk hadn't been able to sell enough exhaustion to make that ass-over-teakettle pinfall look plausible. And it makes Cena (again) look like a schmuck for basically pinning himself.

I thought Boston was generally a hotbed, that was one of the most sedate PPV crowds I can remember. All night long, they didn't help the workers at all.

Someone is going to have to explain to me why they spend a month building up an angle where Sheamus is barred from using the Brogue kick, where he resorts to learning a submission hold, where the heel appears to have an unfair advantage going into the (latest) big match...

... only to pull the rug out from under the idea at the last minute? WTF was that??

Maybe the plan was for an even longer feud, and day of the show Vince pulled the plug on the 'marriage'? Why not have Big Irish win, *then Booker makes his announcement, *then Del Rio gets Brogue kicked to close out the feud?

As to why Ziggles is getting beat regularly, my guess is backstage Vince is saying "this worked so well for Bryan".

A night of pretty good wrestling that I thought was hamstrung by a well-below average crowd. Could be that the only match anyone cared about was Punk-Cena.

P.S. That sudden Komen alliance felt like ham-handed politicking all the way. Someone must be polling poorly with women voters.
