I just reread this and I found this particularly funny. (BOLD added by me.)
The new alignment also enables the NHL to create a balanced schedule in which all teams will play each other at least twice every season, once at home and once on the road, giving fans a chance to see every team and superstar in the League. The remaining games will be played within the conferences.
In the seven-team conferences, teams would play six times -- three home, three away. In the eight-team Conferences, teams would play either five or six times in a season on a rotating basis; three teams would play each other six times and four teams would play each other five times. This process would reverse each season: An eight-team Conference member that plays an opponent six times in one season would play it five times the following season.
Do you know what it is called when a team has to play some teams five times and some teams six times? An UNBALANCED SCHEDULE.
The teams in a seven-team division are playing 46 interdivision games. The teams in an eight-team division are playing 44 interdivision games. That two game-difference makes it basically impossible for the league to create a TRULY balanced schedule where all the teams play the others in the conference the same number of times with the same number of home and away games.
If the goal of realignment was "we need to create a perfectly balanced schedule", they would've been better served to go with two 15-team conferences, playing interconference twice (each home and away) for 30 games and then intraconference four times (two each home and away) for 56 games, making an 86 game schedule.

I'm with you there. Once those two are done there will be no more good interviews left in hockey. Roenick particularly is a good ambassador for the game. I remember him on PTI going through all the other sports and why they're more boring than hockey.
