NFL cashes in with TV deal
Credit: BBC Sports webpage

The NFL has signed a six-year contract extension worth $8billion with American broadcasters Fox and CBS.

Fox will pay $4.3 billion and CBS $3.7 billion according to terms of the deal which runs till 2011.

NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue said: "These agreements represent the NFL's premium position as the number one sports and entertainment attraction on television and in stadiums.

"Our goal in the negotiations has been to continue to deliver our games to the widest possible audience.

"The agreements underscore a unique commitment to broadcast television that no other sport has."

Well, I guess its good to know that the NFL will be on FOX and CBS for a few more years. I really don't know that they were paying that much money just to air the games but I guess they make up the money anyway.

I am surprised it came in that low. The NFL is there biggest ratings winner in the fall/winter months. It brings in a ton of ad reveune ie one Superbowl will pay for some of the cost involved. I am still shocked NBC still thinks anyone cares about the Olympics or the other women's oriented sports expect Notre Dame which gives them a nice chunk of change. It was a bad move to lose the NFL from their broadcast schedule. Good move on Fox and CBS though, that is a sure fire winner no matter who airs it.

I'll be interested to see where the Prime Time rights end up. There were a number of proposals up there, and FOX, ABC, ESPN, TNT, TBS and a few others were trying to get a piece of the action.

The Left, the base of the Democratic Party, hail the virtues of tolerance and consider themselves to be the tolerant citizens of America. In their touting of tolerance they express their obvious disdain for those whose views run contrary to that of enlightened Liberalism.

Dare to make a statement of conviction of any kind, and one of these Leftists will set down his cheese and wine, pause his lecture on the virtues of plurality and the absurdity of the belief in absolute Truth, and tell you your convictions -- everything you believe and hold dear -- are absolutely wrong. Where does he get his understanding that what you claim is "right" is actually not? Against what standard is this wrongness measured? He can't say. All he knows is that you're a bigot, you're intolerant, you're not worthy of being an American. In fact, you're not smart enough to understand what it means to be an American.

And not only are you dumb, you're dangerous. Fanatics like you don't belong in a "tolerant" culture like ours. You and your beliefs and the people who share them should not be allowed in our civilized society . . . or, at the very least, you should be denied the right to vote. Because when you vote, when you're politically active, you screw everything up.

Well it may not be a bad deal for NBC. FOX and CBS actually lose money on the NFL I believe. NBC keeps NASCAR and the Olympics because they actually make money for the network. When NBC lost the NFL (and the NBA) years ago they didnt sweat it, because they had a strong prime time schedule (Friends, Seinfeld, ER) that rakes in cash and visibility for them. The other networks at the time were runninig behind NBC so they needed the visibilty that te NFL brings even if they eat the costs. Especially FOX. The NFL made FOX a real player with the "Big 3."

I think those were all just speculation on some writers' parts. ABC and ESPN still have exclusive negotiating rights to the prime time match-ups for a few more months, then the others can join in and try to steal them. Its hard to imagine Monday night football anywhere but on ABC, but then again CBS lost the NFL for awhile, and they were the first to broadcast it.

Allow me to echo Rock's thoughts on the NFL as a money loser. Basically, it takes the Super Bowl to make money on football; between the enormous rights fees and the cost of production (five to six 720p trucks for Fox; ~three 1080i for CBS) along with talent fee, a million camera men, surly Teamsters to run the thousand points of light miles of cables as well as the retransmission to affiliates, the costs are incredible and aren't offset by the decent revenue brought in. Except when you have the Super Bowl, and you come out black. Hell, IIRC, ABC actually wanted affiliates to help foot the bill a couple years ago.

Is there a PR benefit? Yeah, as we've covered the NFL made Fox a viable player. It's a great way to promote new fall programming. But for NBC it's not worth it. According to Time (or Newsweek, one of the two,) the head of the Broncos gave NBC Sports President Dick Ebersol CBS's estimated bid back in 1998 and the Peacock Net told the NFL what it could do with itself. It wasn't a case of being outbid as much as passing on the deal.

That said, what'll be interesting to see is if the NFL separates the primetime deals. Sunday/Monday should stay together, and as it's been said, should be retained by Disney. The rumored Thursday/Saturday night games should inspire some heavy bidding between Viacom and T-Dub if they're a separate package; TNT wants games back and Spike wants in on the action.

So, um, I don't want you to believe everything you hear at the parent-teacher conference, okay, 'cause...they lie. And they exaggerate. That's why they're teachers, right? Those who can't, right, Mom? Those who can't.

I don't know a lot about the t.v. business but I know that CBS has some of the highest rated shows on television right now. Is it because those are really good shows? Is it because NFL viewers are paying attention to those ads CBS runs? Or is it a combination of both?

I'm not real high on seeing a lot of Thursday Night games like they have an option for, even if it is a hot matchup. I really don't want my NFL splattered all over the week. I'm okay if they put up good Monday Night contests though as there really aren't any calender circlers left on the schedule for Monday unless you happen to be a fan of the who ever is playing that night.

As Homer Simpson said, "A little of column A, a little of column B."

Fox has proven that you can use the NFL to hype a crappy show to death, and no one will watch. (Or hype an awesome, freaking balls-out incredible show (read "Arrested Development") to death, and no one will watch.) So it's not just having football to promote your swag. You have to have the development, especially safe fare like CBS's CSI franchise and its stable of lackluster blue collar crapcoms.
