Aw man, these guys will do anything for story...just let baseball have some fun for a few months. I'll go out on a limb and just say NO! And if he does, it will be #1 on ESPN's "Dumbest Thing Ever in Sports!" 50th special.

EXCEPT, that if you're Coach K MAYBE you look at Steve Spurrier, who no one thought would leave Florida, much less go to the NFL. The guy got a five-year $25-million dollar deal, collected $10 million for two subpar seasons, and now is back to the top of everyone's list when there is an NCAA vacancy.

If your Coach K and duplicating Spurrier is your WORST-case scenario, don't you have to take a good hard look at all that money? We're talking about adding generations to the amount of family that could survive on just what you made COACHING BASKETBALL. You've got to at least think about it, right?

Must be time for Coach K to be looking to get a contract renegotiation/extension/raise out of Duke.
If he goes to the Lakers, it will be a bigger car crash than Pitino, Carlesemo, Calipari and Tarkanian put together. Coach K has the easy life now: Win minimum 28, get at worse a 2 seed in the NCAA Tourney, and get at least to the Elite Eight with a shot at winning the national title every year. Why sacrafice that so Kobe and Payton can ignore you after 2 weeks?

Any third world countries want Kevin Millar? I'll throw Ramiro Mendoza in the package just to give you a good deal.

I dunno on one hand the thoughts of past college to pro coaches come up and on the other I keep thinking that Coach K is not like those who have failed in the past. Pitino and Tarkanian were more of recruiting masters then they were coaching geniuses and to me Krzyzewski has always been a terrific coach who really knew the game. And redsoxnation I actually think Krzyzewski has enough respect that NBA players will listen to him. In the end I don't see him doing this because I'm sure Duke will throw a boat load of money at him to insure he stays.

Jim Gray is reporting the Lakers have offered Coach K the job.

I found that Coach K has a lifetime contract, and when I did a Google search for the highest paid college coach I got Tubby Smith as ONE of at $2.5 million per. George Karl was making $7 million. Phil Jackson was making $6 million. I've got to think Krzyzewski would take a hard look at DOUBLING his salary. The guy's not going to get those kind of offers for too much longer.

Plus, the Lakers are one of THE glamour franchises in the NBA. I can't imagine him even taking a call from anyone else besides the Celtics or Knicks, and I remember when he turned down the C's job back in the '80s.

I think there's a better than 50/50 chance this will happen.

I hope Jim Grey is wrong. Nothing against Coach K, who I am 100% unfamiliar with, but I was really rooting for Rudy T.

I have a question to Laker fans.

It may just be me, Mr. Knick fan, observing, but I'm noticing a lack of vertebrae with some of Mitch Cupcake's moves the past couple years.

Nothing against Coach K -- but THEY went to HIM? Doesn't that sound a bit desperate? I thought they said they weren't in a hurry to get a coach.

And, Frosty, Jim Gray is usually wrong. :)

I dont know about Mitch's missing vertebrae in general, but I really hate how he is handling (or NOT handling) this Shaq/Kobe drama. Than again, maybe he's doing all sorts of positive stuff behind the scenes that I dont even know about.

As far as being in a hurry to find a coach, I havent heard anything to imply that they WERENT in a hurry. Mitch was on ESPN radio (again) last week and he said they wanted to have a coach in place by THIS week. As a matter of fact, he was on before the draft too saying something to the effect of how they wished they had a coach already in place for the draft.

I think his kids are out of the house. What more can he accomplish at Duke? He likes the West coast. It's the dream NBA job. He will always be Coach K, even if he leaves for the NBA. If he is going to do it, now is the time. He would get a large solid contract. He was an assistant coach on the first Dream Team. I would hate to lose him from the NCAA but I bet he goes for it or word would never have leaked out.

I'd never leave a lifetime contract to do anything, especially knowing the sorry state of job security for today's NBA coach. And I wouldn't want to put up with Kobe's ego, either-- especially not when there's a campus and thousands of Duke fans that worship the ground I walk on.

Stay at Duke, Coach K. And I'm not saying that just because I don't like the Lakers. I'm saying that because Phil Jackson won three NBA Championships, and a year later Kobe turned on him. What do you think he's gonna do to you?

I'm all for it, as long as Coach K keeps on winning with the Lakers and those EVIL DUKE BASTARDS start a horrible decline into ineptitude, similar to the 'Heels shortly after the Dean left.

FIrst thing Kobe would do is thank him for not running the Triangle Offense.

I think if Kobe or Shaq leaves, K stays put. Why coach a bunch of guys who were traded for the people who could win titles?

Why would he go? A challenge? Money? Ego? New Scenery? Whatever his reasons, if he does leave, it will leave the NCAA with a HUGE hole to fill. No coach is more respected on the whole as he is.

Besides, who else really has a coaching pedigree that would match his? College or pro? Bobby Knight? Other than that, who is available? Nobody. You arent going to turn this team over to jethro Van Gundy, or anybody else, other than a BIG NAME coach.

According to what I saw tonight on ESPNNEWS:

1. Coach K is frustrated at losing guys to the NBA, as he just lost his best player (Luol Deng) and best recruit (Shaun Livingston) to the draft.

2. The Lakers contract offer would supposedly make Coach K the highest paid coach in ANY sport.

3. This is all happening because Kobe wants Coach K to be the next Lakers' coach.

Damn. Even Vitale thinks he might go.

According to the AP, the Lakers have offered a 5 year, $40 million contract....

But there is no way that I would leave Duke for the Lakers. It's not just the job security; why would you want to deal with this group of egomaniacs as opposed to college kids. They may not always be a walk in the park, but they seem much more coachable than these guys; especially the Lakers.

Plus, I'll be pissed for the Maryland/Duke rivalry. Gary vs Coach K is part of the intriguing subplot....though Coach K leaving would make Maryland the new Duke of the ACC.

God Bless Ronald Reagan, and may he rest in peace...

* * * * * * *

For decades, American had waged a Cold War, and few believed it could possibly end in our own lifetimes. The president was one of those few. And it was the vision and the will of Ronald Reagan that gave hope to the oppressed, shamed the oppressors and ended an evil empire . . . Ronald Reagan was more than a historic figure. He was a providential man who came along just when our nation and the world most needed him.

Fellow Americans, here lies a graceful and a gallant man.
- Dick Cheney, 6/9/2004

Reagan had a rare and prized gift called leadership, that ineffable and sometimes magical quality that sets some men and women apart so that millions will follow them as they conjure up grand visions and invite their countrymen to dream big and exciting dreams.-Brian Mulroney, 6/11/2004

That may actually be part of the appeal, to show he can do it.

I think for $40 million I could learn to deal with a bunch of egomaniacs!

If he wants a challenge then the dysfunctional Lakers and the fat paycheck that comes with them make sense. If he doesn't succeed, he can always follow Rick Pitino back to the college game.

Only if it is back to Duke. If he went back to any other program, it would be considered betraying the family. Plus he would be 60+ and loaded.

I can think of another place Coach K would be an ideal fit if the Lakers thing ends in a wash out...

...YOU-SEE-ELL-AY!

Think about that. He'd FINALLY be the guy to bring back some of the luster from the Wooden-era ('95 notwithstanding). Plus, if I have to live in a world where Bobby Knight is coaching in Lubbock, TX, I think I can deal with seeing Coach K on someone else's sideline.
