Ok, so I'm seeing the crawl on ESPN and I don't get it. I watched the race, it was bullshit, but it is how it goes - right? I guess it's illegal to wipe out - but what if he had just bumped a guy in front?

I'd rather a guy wipe himself out safely to get a yellow than take out a competitor. I thought Newman got screwed out of the win, for the record.

I don't watch a ton of racing so this may be something that has happened often, but it seems pretty out of the ordinary to me.

This is essentially what NASCAR said, which is why they really hammered MWR over the part of this involving Vickers sandbagging the last two laps.

I'm generally OK with it. NASCAR is calling it the "harshest penalty in history", which it kind of is. And I'm sure they wanted to hit Bowyer with a meaningful penalty, but I can buy the argument that in the name of consistency they have to dock the points the same way for everyone, so they couldn't hit Bowyer with a penalty after the Chase adjustment while hitting Truex with one before the Chase adjustment.

They should have just suspended Boyer and moved newman up. I didn't see Truex involved.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

But...the whole point of the shenanigans was to get Truex into the Chase, so even though he wasn't involved he was the beneficiary (along with MWR as an organization, thanks to all the cash they stood to gain from having both cars in the Chase.)

I feel bad for Truex. He just re-upped with MWR through 2015. He's got to be wishing at least a little that he hadn't done that after all this mess, especially since this is MWR's second really high-profile screw-up in six years.

Looking at his with hindsight, MWR really should've told Vickers to purposely break the motor or something.

I think they should have gone to the order just before the caution - kind of like finishing on yellow.

I think that would have put Newman and Gordon in and Truex and Logano out. Which, as a Gordon and Logano hater would have made me happy enough. I hate Logano more.

and then suspend Boyer, which I think brings in Truex, yes.

I really used to like Boyer too. But now I know he's just a cheater - and not even a sneaky one like Chad Kanaus

I think I'm in the minority, but I thought the move was really clever. It was a great showing of strategy.

I think part of the outcry is because the team accused and fined drive Toyota cars. Seems NASCAR Nation have a definite dislike of the manufacturer, and maybe partially because some don't like Waltrip in general.

Would the results have been different if Knaus and the crew of the 48 did it? I think so.

As someone who doesn't watch NASCAR, I think what happened wasn't great strategy, but a black eye for the sport. To me, this is no different from match fixing. I wouldn't want to watch a race where the drivers try to fix the outcome.

It is situations like this, and in Formula 1 which I watch from time to time, that make me wonder why allow teams to race. This isn't a team sport, it should be every driver for themselves. When it is time for the Chase, it is the top 12 drivers, not top owners.

That's the rub, isn't it? I don't blame MWR for devising tactics to get two cars into the Chase, and honestly, NASCAR *asked* for this kind of thing when they made the Chase and they made the points system so easy to manipulate. I mean, with every position being worth a point (*vomit*) why didn't MWR make a fourth car just to start and park it, to guarantee a finish one spot better than they would have without it?

I really think NASCAR has a simple solution to discourage this...go back to making finishing positions in the top-10 worth bonus points. That would discourage teams like the 48 and 15 from getting too fancy with their R&D set-ups after clinching spots, because they would still try for bonus points by leading the points. I guarantee Bowyer wouldn't have spun if it would've cost him a couple spots in he standings...MWR would've found a different way.

I don't blame NASCAR for freaking out, though. Imagine if an NFL team had it's QB throw a pick-six on purpose to swing a game so one team would make the playoffs over another.

But, wait! There's more!

NASCAR probing Gilliland, Logano teams

FOX Sports has exclusively learned of improper communications Saturday night during NASCAR's Sprint Cup race at Richmond between David Gilliland's No. 38 team and Joey Logano's No. 22 team that helped Logano earn final spot in Chase for Sprint Cup.

NASCAR is looking into the issue and it could lead to another shakeup in the Chase.

Tune into NASCAR Race Hub at 4:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 for more information.

That would be greatly ironic in that Logano didn't NEED to pass Gilliland; he had the tiebreaker over Gordon and thus didn't need that point. (Guess they didn't know that at the time...)

By the way, did FOX Sports "exclusively learn" it by reading the AP story? ;-)
