from the torch:

The New York Times yesterday featured an article on the portrayal of gays in pro wrestling. Kevin Dunn, the executive producer of World Wrestling Entertainment, said regarding Billy & Chuck: "They'll definitely have a baby-face run. Guaranteed. It will be great television." The article added: "Officials at the company are coy about the sexual orientation of Billy and Chuck, declining to call them gay or straight. As Mr. Dunn put it, Billy and Chuck 'were created out of a need to have different characters.' It is up to the audience, he said, to interpret them. Nevertheless, Vince Russo, a former writer for World Wrestling Entertainment, who created story lines and scripts for other wrestlers, said that it should be fairly clear that the two characters were 'flaming homosexuals'... Scott Seomin, a spokesman for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, said he believed that they were an improvement on their predecessors and thinks they have the 'potential to be a good start.' 'They don't seem defamatory,' Mr. Seomin said. 'I don't mind stereotypes. Stereotypes are based on truth and humor.'"

I doubt it'll happen, but if it does I'll be interested to see how they do it. Me, personally, I like Billy and Chuck as a tag team. Plus, for the whole time I can remember it, the gimmick hasn't been done in a trashy was, ala' Lenny and Lodi and/or Lenny and Bruce. They aren't kissing one another's hands for tags or really stereotyping. You could say the hug in the corner is a stereotypical thing to do, but I don't see it as such.

Goldust hasn't done anything THAT gay anyways. It's been years since they played up THAT part of the angle.

You ever notice how girls who wore lots of make-up and were considered goog looking or doable in high school, AIN'T that good lookin' a few years after you've graduated? Still doable though. Oh yeah. MORE doable. Hehe.

Wow, GLAAD didn't flame the WWE like they did the WCW over Lenny and Lodi. Maybe because the Billy, Chuck and Rico characters has a few more dimensions to them.

I don't know... Goldust did have a crush on RVD a few months ago.

But, yeah, there's something inherently less offensive about Billy and Chuck, although I'd be damned if I can figure out exactly what it is.

Three things leap to mind. First, while B&C act gay, they aren't flamingly stereotypical -- no limp wrists, lisps, crossdressing, or Judy Garland worship. Second, they haven't had to go through a Goldust-style angle where a straight wrestler is horrified and sickened by a gay wrestler being attracted to him, and proceeds to beat him to a pulp. Third, they've still been treated as serious competitors, which Lenny and Lodi rarely were. I remember one match on Thunder where L&L got absolutely murdered by the West Texas Rednecks -- not getting in a single offensive move all match long. Even when Lenny won the CW belt, it was obviously more a sop to GLAAD than a real achievement on his part.

Just pointing out that you can still see the first two waves mentioned, or at least talk to them. 2/3 of that last wave, you can't.
