I know it's not even licking the bottom of the boots of Yankees/Red Sox, but Chris Berman/Tony Kornheiser/Jim Rome/George Micheals is going to need SOMETHING to talk about for two weeks, and it'll show up.

Hold nothing sacred and you'll never be dissapointed. Especially not this statement.

I still think they can get a lot of mileage out of "Hey, Peyton won last year! Can Eli win THIS year?"

I should also note these quotes from the San Diego, Indy game thread, of all places.

You are a clever man, spf. You successfully vexed the Pack. Bravo.

For an encore, can you break out the whammy on the Phoenix Suns come NBA playoff time?

EDIT: This comes with apologies to Big Bad, who later said this.

Indeed.

They do the same thing that happens every year, they are destroyed. The losers of both championship games and the super bowl loser have to destroy their "Champion" hats and shirts after the final gun is sounded.

I know I've read somewhere (Uni Watch, maybe?) that the NFL donates them to the Red Cross or some such organization that sends them to rural Africa. I'm sure I've seen a pic of a kid in a "St. Louis Rams Super Bowl XXXVI Champions"-shirt to back that up, as well as the requisite "somewhere in Africa there's a village who think the early 90s Buffalo Bills are the greatest team in NFL history"-joke.

Have to destroy? I remember walking around downtown Pittsburgh, the day after they lost the Super Bowl, and I distinctly remember one store selling some Steelers championship gear(at a HUGE discount).

I'm talking about the hats/caps they have at sideline for the team to wear after the game is over IF they win.

I have no idea what happens to any other merchandise.

Well, that was horrible to watch. I mentally prepared myself for it, but man...Green Bay was just outplayed from start to finish. They were lucky to even get into overtime.

I hope New England beats New York about 60-0. Would you really want to hear about that dullard Manning boy beating 'the best team ever' for eight months? Besides, rooting for any New York sports team to win a title just feels dirty.

How you uh, how you comin' on that novel you're working on? Huh? Gotta a big, uh, big stack of papers there? Gotta, gotta nice litte story you're working on there? Your big novel you've been working on for 3 years? Huh? Gotta, gotta compelling protaganist? Yeah? Gotta obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Gotta story brewing there? Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh? Yea, talking about that 3 years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end your main character is richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah?

Welcome home, men of the 2nd Bn, 127th Inf, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army Nat'l Guard! Good luck to those down south.

I can't believe my chance to go GET PAID to cover a Super Bowl just went up in smoke...at Lambeau...in below-zero temperatures...to a #5 seed.

My God, this hurts as bad as 4th-and-26.

Go Pats.

Actually, I saw something about that on the news once: they get sent overseas to third-world countries as charitable donations to folks who need clothing. So sometime later this year, a guy in Africa or Tonga or Nepal or wherever is going to be wearing a "Green Bay Packers NFC Champions 2007" T-shirt and cap. (Of course, this is only official NFL merch, not the knockoff stuff.) The NFL firmly bans them from ever coming back to the US.

Aw crap. So either the Giants win (bad enough) and Eli makes it back to back SBs for the Mannings or the Pats do and we spend the next decade hearing about how their the greatest team in the history of all sports in the known universe ever. Ugh.

I wouldn't be so quick as some to expect a Pats blow-out. With the exception of the Pittsburgh game they haven't really been destroying anyone of note since midway through the season. If the Giants can get some sort of running game going and avoid stupid turnovers/penalties they've got a shot.

This is true. My dad had posters of Frank Gifford and Pat Summerall in the basement (next to the lighted Schaefer Beer sign!). I loved Tucker Frederickson.

I was going to change my avatar to Eli from Y.A., but I can't tempt fate.

I also left the Eli #10 game jersey in the drawer today. The last time I wore it, they lost, so I was not testing that theory.

Sorry about your Pack, CRZ, but yay for the Giants.

Would you really want to hear about 'the best team ever' until another team goes 19-0? Besides, Peyton's the media whore, not Eli. He'll probably stick to a couple obscene Oreo commercials and not be talked about much until next season.

Meanwhile, if the Patriots win, you'll not only have to hear about 'the best team ever' every day, you'll hear about it when the Celtics are in the playoffs, when spring training for the Sox starts up and probably every time the Bruins take the ice.

GO GIANTS!!

At least I'd expect them to be classier handling it than the CURRENT "best team ever", although I guess time would have to tell on that. And if they LOSE, you will have to hear about BOTH of those teams, because people would still endlessly reference any 16-0 team that didn't win the Super Bowl.

So in the end, I'd say if your goal is to NOT hear about the Patriots for a LONG time, you're fucked either way.

After you sober up, perhaps you could try to finagle a method to follow the Packers coaching staff as they head off to the Pro Bowl. A week in Hawaii in February would be a nice consolation prize. Then again, a week in a meat freezer might be considered balmy.
Hindsight being 20/20, perhaps Seattle would have been better off a few years ago losing the coin toss in overtime, as since that game Favre has thrown 2 OT picks that have ended his season.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I have no problem hearing about the Pats for a LONG time as long as every time they are referenced, it ends in "...went 18-0 and then choked in the Super Bowl." No, I have no problem hearing about that for a LOOOOOONNNNNGGGGG time.

I'm going with my brother and rooting for the Giants. Send that jersey on my way and I'll do the family proud wearing it. GO GIANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!

The funny thing about yesterday is that I wasn't able to watch ANY of the games, with the exception of two mintues in last night's game, like forty seconds into overtime, watching Favre THROW THE INTERCEPTION OF DOOM.

I love it.

I'm sure that New England will be something like 8 point favorites, or thereabouts, but you know what, screw it. No one said they'd beat Dallas, no one said they'd beat Green Bay, and they gave New England a game week 17. As long as it's a better performance than they gave against Baltimore the last time they were in the Super Bowl, then it's all gravy. Hell of a year.

More importantly, the postgame interviews confirm that Tom Coughlin didn't lose his face to frostbite, God that was scary whenever Fox hit a closeup on him.

It's a good thing that Tynes got to redeem himself with the OT kick. As bad as he shanked it to the left at the end of regulation, my friend and I both thought he blew it for our G- Men. Otherwise, that was one hell of a game played all around for NY. Eli may not be perfect, but none of us can use that "he can't play in the cold" BS anymore and no one can bitch anymore about how he plays. He doesn't puts up stats like his bro or Brady, but he puts up wins, and that's good enough for me. Too bad we don't have much of a chance to win Super Bowl XLII cause you know Belicheck and the Pats are going to steamroll us to get that perfect record come hell or highwater. Still, the Giants have gone so much further than I ever thought they would, so I'm happy with the way things turned out this year.

As for Coughlin, you're right, that was scary when they showed him on camera. Still, at least he had more sense to wear a cap than Jimmy Johnson did wearing that stupid headband. I like JJ, but not only did he looked colder, but he also looks like a reject from Olivia Newton- John's 'Physical' video.

No, nobody cares about the Pro Bowl. Not even half the starters that get picked. Nobody ever travels to cover that thing.

I've always heard that they were destroyed and heard announcers say as much. It might have been that way in the past but the NY Times agrees with you with what happens today.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/04/sports/football/04gear.html

EDIT:

Just so I don't think my memory is totally shot, the article does mention that some shirts were sent to the trash heap in the past

The Bills, losers of four consecutive Super Bowls in the 1990s, at least have a following in Romania. Some of their Super Bowl champions T-shirts were relegated to a trash heap in Tampa, Fla.

In the final seconds of the 1991 Super Bowl at Tampa Stadium, Buffalo place-kicker Scott Norwood lined up for a potential 47-yard game-winning field goal against the Giants. Eddie White, a Reebok vice president, ran onto the field with an armful of Bills championship shirts.

He had to position himself to get a shirt to Buffalo’s best players after the field goal was converted. But Norwood’s kick drifted right, and Mr. White did a 180-degree turn, sprinting from the field and tossing the shirts in the closest trash bin.
