I'm not a hardcore video gamer, so this may be old news to ya... (and yes, I've already skimmed through the "New Smaller PS2" thread)

I dropped by Electronics Boutique this afternoon and heard about their trade-in promo for the new smaller, PS2. It's selling for $149, but if you trade-in your old PS2, you get a $100 credit. In other words, they're offering the new model for 49 bucks. Supposedly, the sales gecko told me that this promo is only running for the next week.

Originally, I was asking about the PS2 network adapter for my old system, and the clerk mentioned that for ten bucks more I could get the new system which includes said adapter.

I'd have to drill through my floor/ceiling to hook up my cable modem to my PS2, so I'm not sold on my need for online gaming. But, in your opinion, is the new PS2 worth getting? For 50 bucks?! Aside from the network capability, what else does it REALLY offer? Or, since I'm not a hardcore gamer, am I better off waiting until the PS3 comes along? My inclination right now is to wait for PS3... but feel free to enlighten me.

I'd get it now. Look at all the games you can play till the PS3 arrives. No set date for when the PS3 will arrive or the X-Box 2 for that matter. But we are a year way reguardless. And I just might take EB up on the offer as I planned on getting the new smaller PS2 anyway to replace my 3 year old system.

If you're concerned with your old PS2 getting the common disc read error, you may want to trade it for the new PS2 because it will have a flip top door for discs. But if you have a hard drive, then forget about it because the new PS2 was not designed to work with the hard drive. Also there are some games that are documented to not work with the new system.

I haven't heard this, and have been thinking about getting the new smaller PS2. What games have issues with it?

With the incompatibility issues with the HDD, is it safe to assume that Sony's given up on the medium, or are they developing an external adaptor for it?

So far, all I've heard is that the next Gran Turismo game is going to support it. Since I'm not a huge GT fan, I won't bother getting it..but it would be nice to see if any other games that are being released will use it.

WHat's the news on the PSX system that was released in Japan? WHen's the launch date here in North America?

You forgot to mention the old PS2 & 5 games (sports games not included) are require to get a $100 credit no just an old PS2

But, to make the deadline, GT3 will be OFF-line. That's a big shame.

Sony does have a plan. "Some time" after GT3 is released, an on-line version will come out.

I assume you mean GT4?

Also, I read somewhere GT4 will make use of a USB printer so that you can print out pictures of your car/race replays/something.

We don't have TiVo here in Canada, unfortunately.

Poopie. I meant GT4. With that big garage glitch in GT2, I barely remember it exists.

There will be a "B-Spec" mode in GT4 where you can "program" your car and watch the CPU race it in replay mode. Almost like a franchise mode from football for GT.

The little booger didn't mention THAT! That makes a huge difference. They didn't mention the 5 games. I'll pass and wait for PS3.

I don't think I even have five non-sports games I could trade in. With the replayability of NCAA Football, Madden, and HCTP, there's no real reason for me to get other games.

I wonder if the SmackDown! games count as sports games...

SD! do count as sports games. I assume there is fine print or something on the advertisement flyer about "some titles excluded, see associate for details"

They are having a trade in "sale" till Oct 29th, with various extra trade in value toward store credit and that is where this PS2 trade in thing came from.

The new PS2 as we know does NOT support the HDD drive, and no longer disc tray, it's a top loaded like a portable CD player. So much for fitting it snug into a entertainment center.

I'd have to disagree there, LanceJr. According to the associate at a store in Edmonton, they'll accept wrestling games, because, to his knowledge, every game is different, whereas with sports games, they're the same game with small tweaks in gameplay and updated statistics.

I'd be very curious to know how popular the new PS2 will be. Was it released in Japan already? I'm almost certain that I will *NOT* get one, since my current PS2 gets enough use, and I am considering getting the HDD when a game that I like supports it.

The question wasn't if they accept wrestling games, but if they are considered sports games and they are. By in large sports games are not accepted but a few sports games are, and wrestling games are some of them that are accepted.
