| #1 Posted on 16.10.09 2200.07 | Instant Rating: 8.85 | Howdy! Coming Tuesday and the week thereof: 26 Blu-ray and 222 DVDs. Let's do this thing!
PICK OF THE WEEK Ultimate Death Match (The W at Amazon) This film makes it up here on the basis of three little words: STARRING. AL. SNOW. That said, from the product description, it sounds.....just, just awful: After a death in the ring of one of their superstars, the FOPW (Federation of Pro Wrestling) lose their licences. Promoter Jake Reed is forced to hold his illegal matches on the internet with one big catch . . . all matches are to the death!
Someone will die in front of millions of rabid, bloodthirsty fans. Not since the bloddy days of the Roman Gladiators has there been such a public exhibition of savage combat!
LET THE BLOODY GAMES BEGIN!
And let's face it, can you go wrong with the use of bold type in the description? I think not. "So where's the YouTube trailer?" you ask - "I know there's GOT to be one." And you're right. It's right here (youtube.com) - and the uploader has several OTHER movie-related videos for you to watch; probably JUST enough to convince you OUT of paying money for this DVD. DON'T FALL INTO THAT TRAP! CLICK ON IT *NOW!* SPEND SPEND SPEND!
Let's do the television first:
TV OF THE WEEK
SPECIAL PICK OF THE WEEK (TV) It's Garry Shandling's Show: The Complete Series (Showtime/FOX, 1986-90) NO WAY DUDE. I LOVE this show and can't believe it's all out at the same time - and on Shout! Factory which should mean uncut - with all music intact! Four seasons by four discs each. More info at the aforementioned Shout! Factory (shoutfactorystore.com)
The Judy Garland Holiday Show (CBS, 1963) Hmm, this would be episode...12 (or 15) (who's counting)
Numbers: The Complete Fifth Season (CBS, 2008-9) I think they mean "Numb3rs" Numb3rs: Seasons 1-5 See?
The L Word: Final Season (Showtime, 2009) Season 6 - that seems kinda pricy for eight episodes The L Word: Complete Series Pack
Top Chef: New York (Season 5) (Bravo, 2008-9)
Saturday Night Live: The Best of Amy Poehler Wow, what an unattractive choice for the cover photo.
Transformers: 25th Anniversary Matrix Of Leadership Edition [The Complete Series] (syndicated, 1984-7) 16 discs, book and two magents with the Autobots and Decepticons symbols. More info at the mighty Shout! Factory (shoutfactorystore.com) (who said this was out three months ago - maybe it's just new to Amazon?)
Vega$: The First Season, Vol. 1 (ABC, 1978) Probably first half (11 episodes) of the season
Hawaii Five-O: The Seventh Season (CBS, 1974-5) Say it with me: "With Kam Fong as Chin Ho"
Plastic Man: The Complete Collection (ABC, 1979-80) I gotta tell ya....sometimes you don't HAVE to release EVERYTHING on DVD. This would be an example of that.
The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, Vol. 1 (Cartoon Network, 2008) Episodes 1-5
Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs: Complete Series (syndicated, 1987-8) Two seasons
Peanuts: 1970's Collection, Vol. 1 (It's a Mystery Charlie Brown / Play It Again / A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving / It's the Easter Beagle / There's No Time for Love / You're Not Elected) Only "Mystery" (CBS, 1974) is new to DVD - which makes this a clever ploy to get you to buy five specials you already have three copies of
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour: The Best of Season 2 More info at Time Life/Direct (timelife.com)
Route 66: Season 3, Vol. 2 (CBS, 1963) Last 15 episodes of the season
Tales of Wells Fargo - The Best of the Color Season - 22 episodes
Right Beside The River (WQED, 2009) More info at WQED (wqed.org)
Living With the Machigenga (Travel)
The Great Outdoors Collection I don't know what it is, but you get two discs of it
In Search of Santa Claus (Smithsonian Channel) More info at Smithsonian Channel (smithsonianchannel.com) In Search of Santa Claus Same as above, different distributor?
CHEAP(ER) COLLECTIONS YOU'VE SEEN BEFORE Homicide: Life on the Street - The Complete Series (repackaged) I feel like this "repackage" can't be nearly as cool as the original complete series box sitting in the case at home - which was apparently discontinued but there are still a few copies out there Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman: The Complete Series More affordable, but not as cool as the original megaset Gilligan's Island: The Complete Seasons 1 & 2 (CBS, 1964-6) If that price is correct, this is a real steal, because I'm pretty sure these were like $40 a season. CHiPs: The Complete First & Second Seasons (NBC, 1977-9) Hmm, these too! Turner must need to clear some warehouse space or something...now I wish I hadn't already bought the first season because I could have gotten it for free by buying the second season at a steep discount...hmmm! Maybe I still will! The Dukes of Hazzard: The Complete Seasons 1 & 2 (CBS, 1979-80) ....and this one... The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: The Complete Seasons 1 & 2 (NBC, 1990-2) ...and this one.
TV MOVIES OF THE WEEK Unlikely Angel (CBS, 1996) Dolly Parton, Roddy McDowall Painful Secrets (Secret Cutting - made for TV, Canada/USA, 2000) Sean Young, Rhea Perlman, Kimberlee Peterson IS - more info at Vanguard (vanguardcinema.com) The Secret of the Nutcracker (made for TV, Canada, 2007) Brian Cox, Janelle Jorde - more info and trailer at BFS (bfsent.com) The Secret of the Nutcracker [Blu-ray]
BRITISH TV OF THE WEEK Fawlty Towers: The Complete Collection Remastered (BBC, 1975, 1979)
Black Adder Remastered: The Ultimate Edition (BBC, 1983-1999) All four series, the specials, and the documentary Blackadder Rides Again (BBC, 2008) make up the 6 discs of a series that at least one other guy thinks you should buy (The W) Five of the six discs in this set are also available separately: Black Adder (BBC, 1983) Black Adder II (BBC, 1986) Black Adder III: The Third (BBC, 1988) Black Adder IV: Goes Forth (BBC, 1989) Black Adder V: The Specials (BBC, 1998, 1999)
FRENCH/CANADIAN TV OF THE WEEK Paris 1919 (Arte, France/Canada, 2009) Documentary of the WWI peace talks - more info at BFS (bfsent.com)
AND FINALLY, "60 MINUTES" OF THE WEEK 60 Minutes - The Swindler (October 4, 2009) 60 Minutes - 130 Million Tons of Waste (October 4, 2009) 60 Minutes - The Great Migration (October 4, 2009) See all three segments for free at 60 Minutes (cbsnews.com)

I've been seeing ads for it on BBC America. I'm glad there there is new commentary because the commentary they have now with the directors suck.
They hardly do any commentating at all. You just hear them laugh for about 30 mins. Quite boring.
One episode, if you listen through to the end credits, you can hear a bit they didn't re-record over and you can hear the director doing the commentary argue with the DVD people for not talking during the session.
