Welcome to the dead times. DVD makers have this crazy theory that releasing stuff RIGHT before Christmas tends not to sell very well, so they don't schedule stuff this week - or they schedule it and it mysteriously goes "unavailable" by the time I compile this list. (There are over fifty titles which you WON'T see because Amazon has marked them "unavailable" - and that may go up by Monday!)
What we DO have are 59 DVDs, 27 Blu-rays and five "digital" releases...and there ARE some big titles in here, so don't just take the week off. JOIN US
One Tree Hill: The Complete Eighth Season (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) (The CW, 2010-1) This is actually selling better than "Futurama" this week. I'm going to hope it's because there are both a DVD and Blu-ray version of "Futurama" and not that the DVD purchasing public is so heavy into "One Tree Hill" ...because that's what will get me through the night.
The Franchise: Season 1 (The Franchise: A Season with the San Francisco Giants - Showtime, 2011) (Rescheduled from last week)
Warrior (2011) Tom Hardy IS, Joel Edgerton, Nick Nolte - I think Kurt Angle's in it too, right? Right. Warrior [Blu-ray] Warrior (digital purchase)
Margin Call (2011) Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, Mary McDonnell, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci - hmmm, isn't this still out in theatres in limited release? Margin Call [Blu-ray]
The Tempest (2010) Helen Mirren - hmm, rerelease? The DVD out in September is now unavailable, but the Blu-ray from then still IS available and I don't see a replacement for IT...
Catch .44 (2011) Forest Whitaker, Bruce Willis, Malin Akerman, Nikki Reed, Deborah Ann Woll, Brad Dourif - more info on this title and trailer at Anchor Bay Entertainment (anchorbayentertainment.com) Catch .44 [Blu-ray]
Toast (UK, 2010) Helena Bonham Carter, Ken Stott, Freddie Highmore More info on this DVD and trailer also available at Image (image-entertainment.com) ...where THEY say it's not coming out until 1/17, so we'll await the rescheduling
Burke & Hare (UK, 2010) Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Isla Fisher, Tom Wilkinson - more info on this DVD at MPI (mpihomevideo.com) or the movie's page at Facebook
Saint Nick (Sint - Netherlands, 2010) This film "re-imagines the jolly old saint as a bloodthirsty bishop fulfilling a grisly prophecy every 32 years under the Christmas full moon." MERRY CHRISTMAS. More info on this title and trailer at IFC (ifcfilms.com); more info on the DVD at MPI
Stay Cool (2009) Winona Ryder, Mark Polish, Sean Astin, Hilary Duff, Josh Holloway, Jon Cryer, Chevy Chase
Full Signal (Occupied Palestinian Territory/France/Hungary/Israel/Italy/Netherlands/Spain/Sweden/USA/Serbia and Montenegro, 2010) Geez, what countries DIDN'T produce this documentary? Anyway, it's about how awful cellular antennas are for you around the world.
Julia's Eyes (Los Ojos de Julia - Spain, 2010) Produced by Guillermo del Toro - more info on this DVD at MPI (mpihomevideo.com)
The World Is Big And Salvation Lurks Around the Corner (Svetat e Golyam i Spasenie Debne Otvsyakade - Bulgaria/Germany/Slovenia/Hungary, 2008) Miki Manojlovic, Carlo Ljubek, Hristo Mutafchiev (English subsite available - or Slovenian, if you prefer) or more info on this DVD and trailer at Olive Films
The Devil (1981) (Xie Mo - Hong Kong/Taiwan, 1981) This film "introduced the gut wrenching gimmick of live insect vomiting." So...it's got that. "Limited edition of 500" - more info on this DVD (and cheaper) at Apprehensive Films (thecrippledmasters.com)
WWE: Survivor Series 2011 There are folks really up in arms that they declined this one a Blu-ray release...I'm not ONE of those folks, but I thought you might like to know. You might ALSO like to know that this title is currently a buck cheaper at the WWEShop (wweshop.com).
Saint Nick (Sint) was pretty good. It's certainly not gonna win any awards or anything like that, but if you wanna see a decent horror film about Christmas, this is good for a look. Make a movie night out of it and watch last years Rare Exports as well.
