ESPNews just said that Shaq could void the last year of his contract ($30M) and they're about to agree on a 5 year, $125M deal. So, he's taking a pay cut of sorts to help the Heat build around him and the Flash.

On a related note, Andrew Bynum, the 17-year-old center the Lakers picked in the draft, made comparisons to himself and Shaq earlier - except that Bynum makes his free throws. And, you know Shaq had to retaliate:

Well, he's a bit out of line here but the man can cut a promo like nobody's business.

Shaq does need to learn you don't get the Dr. tag until after you get the Ph.D., not before.
Bynum should realize he is playing on a team that Shaq will make sure he is able to suit up against. First forearm shiver should send Bynum into another time zone.
As for the contract itself: It will strangle the Heat on the back end, but they have to make the move. Realistically, Shaq should still be dominant for 2, maybe 3 more years before his body completely deteriorates. Miami needs to win a title during the early portion of the contract. Should they win the title, it is worth the salary cap pain on the back end (which will be increased because Wade will be a max contract guy by that point). If they can get Rahim as a mid-level exception player, that would give them a guy hungry to win who can go 20-10 opposite Shaq. While home court is a nice advantage to have, Miami needs to realize Shaq shouldn't play more than 60 games in the regular season in order to give them a better chance of a healthy Shaq for a long playoff run. Rahim and Wade would give Miami a strong line-up when Shaq is out, and at worst the 2 seed, as the Atlantic will still suck, and the loser of the Central can only be the 4 seed. By default Miami probably has clinched the 2 seed in the East already barring calamitous injury.

Jeez loueez, he's gonna sign a 5-year, $125 million contract and that constitutes a pay cut? Holy shit, does the man make enough money, or what?

I think in the short term, this will obviously benefit Miami. The Heat will no doubt contend for the NBA Championship for at least the next two or three years, and perhaps longer if Dwayne Wade becomes the bona-fide megastar he seems destined to be.

But I can't help thinking that giving a 5-year contract to a 33-year-old player for that kinda money will backfire towards the end of the deal. No doubt Shaq will hear that sentiment and set out to prove it wrong. But if his injuries hinder his production-- or worse, force him to retire-- the Heat will still be responsible for paying him, and they'll be up Shit Creek when it comes to making deals under the salary cap.

On the other hand, I don't think they had much alternative. Shaq was going to get the money from someone, and the Heat wanted to make sure Shaq didn't leave Miami. I don't even think this is necessarily a bad deal (other than the fact that no one should be paid that kind of money for dribbling a ball around, but I digress). But it's a calculated risk on Miami's part, a risk that could backfire if his injuries become more serious than they already are.

I love Shaq so very much. He has to be the most entertaining sports star out there today. Guys like Tyson and Rodman are funny, but in their case, everyone is laughing at them, not with them.

This does seem like a pretty risky deal for the Heat. I doubt that Shaq will still be a $25M player when 2010 rolls around. Hell, I don't know that he's worth that much in 2005-2006. But I suppose that they have to resign Shaq because with him and Wade, I'd expect that they'll win at least one title over the next five years - and if you can put yourself in that position, you have to do it.

If/when it gets to that point, they could always just dump him under that new "Dump one player & not have their salary count against your cap even though you still have to pay him" provision under the new collective bargaining agreement.

That provision only exists for this summer, I believe.

I don't know if CubsFan is correct about that being a one-time-only thing. But I do know it's only valid if the team looks like it's going to exceed the luxury tax threshold. It's not designed for actual salary-cap relief.
