Does anyone know if segasports is doing a college football game this year. I know they changed the franchise to ESPN (then whatever sport), but I did not see one for college football. Has anyone heard if they decided to not do college this year?

Sega decided to drop college football for the year. I'm not sure what their reasoning was. NCAA football 2004 from EA is the only option this year, and it comes out July 17.

Based on what I've heard and read about NCAA 2004, perhaps Sega knew how AWESOME it was going to be and decided they couldn't compete with it.

I am all over NCAA 2004. My girfriend won't be happy, but it's a price I'm willing to pay for the best football game in the world.

The past two versions of NCAA Football have been the most played games in my collection. I've probably played them more than any games i've EVER had. So every version is AWESOME. Is there anything new in the next one to make it even better?

I just know there is supposed to be something like 60+ classic teams to play with, which just cranks up the awesomeness by itself.

Click here for an interview with the producer.

Some points:
20 Classic Games.
Over 100 Classic teams.
A bunch of Div A-II schools.
Dynasty mode includes weekly Sports Illustrated cover shots based on that week's great events.
Better AI.
PS2 online play.

I have to say that the dynasty mode in 2003 was the freakin' bomb. I think I'm going to have to finally buy my own nextgen console for this one. And NBA Street 2.

I will be picking this up next week, and the wife will not be happy. Previews I have read say that they have expanded recruiting to the point that you have to sell a prospect on the points that would make your school appeal to him.

I hope that aspect of recruiting makes it more logical. We had a really hard time with recruiting on 2003. It's possible that we weren't doing it right, but we were having a hard time getting good recruits even though we had 6-star prestige and were reigning back to back champions. I wonder if it was the fact that we were using a created school.

So does anyone have any recruiting tips?

I liked the recruiting in last years game, It was hard to get a blue chip in positions where you were already deep in talent (they wouldn't start so why would they come anyway) and found that spending a little extra time finding the better 4 star guys would give you the depth and talent to win (speed kills).

I felt like it didn't work to zero in on one 5-star position player, even if he was interested in your school. I went into one season with one returning QB who was ranked like 70, and tried to get a 5-star QB who ultimately went to UCLA instead. I ended up getting a walk-on 3-star QB instead because all of the other QBs had already committed. I also got burned at HB the year before and had to have a 3-star guy there. Of course my defense is stacked with 5-star guys so we kicked UCLA's ass for the three years he started there. Too bad my walk-on had to play as a freshman and cost me two losses (along with my 3-star HB, who had to play because my returning 1100-yard rush went pro early) ending my run of back-to-back national titles.

Of course this year's recruiting class netted two 5-star QBs and two 5-star HBs. I also seem to get CBs committing every year, so I have six of them now, although I had to get the guy this year because he ran a 4.20 (!) 40.

My O-Line recruiting has been quite good, however, and I played my first game of 2006 last night and ran for over 250 yards because of it, whereas in the past I was mostly a passing team. Of course, I play #1 Oklahoma next...possibly the last game I'll play until I get 2004.

(Can you tell I'm geeked to get that? I didn't think so.)

My recruiting tip: Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

The more you are in need at a certain position, the more people you should be trying to recruit at that position, in case things don't go well. You can always remove offers if you get the number of signees you want at a certain position.

Also, as brick said, there's good value to be had in the 4-star, and even sometimes 3-star, range. You don't want to necessarily ignore them just because they are not 5-stars.

And lastly, it does seem that even if you are a high prestige school, you will still have better luck with those closer to home than those from far away locations, at least it seems that way to me.

As far as NCAA 2004 goes, one recruiting aspect that I'm excited about is that recruiting is that now your playcalling tendendcies will play a role in recruiting (and it will be stat-based). For example, if during the season you run the ball 40-50 times a game the previous season, you will have a difficult time convincing a top-notch wide receiver to accept a scholarship at your university.

Also, if you sign a blue-chipper in a certain position, other blue-chip players that you are recruiting at that same position may go from high interest to no interest because you signed the other guy. (So it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to sign two 5-star quarterbacks and two 5-star running backs in the same season)

Finally, you will now be able to assign a certain amount of recruiting points toward guys wanting to leave for the NFL to try to convince them to change their mind and stay, if you so choose.

(I'm also glad that they are finally putting the mass substitution feature back in. I don't know why they ever took it out!)

I'll tell you what NOT to do: Don't create a super-stud player especially for your team and expect to sign him.

True story: I had just finished winning three straight titles with Ohio State, and my quarterback was graduating. Since his backup sucked, I went and created a QB prospect to replace him. Things started out well enough, he was interested in my school, and all, and then at the last minute, the bastard signed with Tennesee.

Fast forward to the following season. Based on the ONE signing, UT is now ranked #1 ahead of me in both polls, AND they're on my schedule. Through three games, he's leading the country in yards, completion percentage, and touchdowns.

I'm STILL bitter about that. At least I didn't name him after myself. THAT would have been embarrassing.

NCAA comes out on the 17th? Well, there goes THAT weekend...

Got mine yesterday afternoon. Its a lot more like Madden 2003 as far as Gameplay goes. A little harder to pass than last year, but running is a breeze.

The dynasty mode is just plain off the hook. The Sports Illustrated issues are very cool. Recruiting is much more detailed with the "pitches" you can give recruits.

I have the Gamecube version and the only complaint I have is that sometimes the replays go very slow. Thats only thing I have noticed thus far that bothers me.

The commentary is a lot less generic this year- they will make comments during plays (like "Look at that move!) and give a little more in depth pre-game predictions.

Just an awesome awesome game all around.

WIENER OF THE DAY! July 6, 2002!

If I lived back in the wild west days, instead of carrying a six-gun in my holster, I'd carry a soldering iron. That way, if some smart-aleck cowboy said something like "Hey, look. He's carrying a soldering iron!" and started laughing, and everybody else started laughing, I could just say, "That's right, it's a soldering iron. The soldering iron of justice." Then everybody would get real quiet and ashamed, because they had made fun of the soldering iron of justice, and I could probably hit them up for a free drink.

Best Buy didn't have it yet here in Bama, but I found it at Circuit City, and everyone who buys it there gets a 10 dollar gift certificate.

I've only played one time and played pretty well offensively. 255 yards passing and 113 yards rushing but I got sacked 9 times! Anybody who has played it a few more times, can you tell me if sacks are more frequent? Or am I just playing a really good defense (I was playing against Georgia).

I've been sacked quite a few times too, so...who knows?

Funnest moment yet: Playing as Wisconsin and blowing out West Virginia, WR Lee Evans catches a wide open pass for a touchdown does a little dance and gets flagged for taunting. YES! I love taunting!!
