Inspired by this thread (The W), I've added some tiny X links to your index page. If you click on them, they will wipe out your "forum read time" for that forum. So if you would just as soon not have your read time tracked for that forum, now you can maybe save yourself some time with future visits.

Forums should still show the "NEW" icon if a post has been made in the past hour to that forum. (That's bumped up from 15 minutes, by the way, in case you ever noticed that as a guest before.)

If you reset your forum read time and decide you'd like to have it back, you can either use the green clock icon in any post to set your forum read time at the timestamp of that post, or you can use the "Mark all forums read" link on the index page to reinstate a read time of RIGHT NOW for ALL of our forums.

I hope you find this sufficiently confusing...then useful.

If you see any bugs (I tried to fix the index and forum pages...does anything else need to be fixed?) please let us know!

The only problem I have with it, and this will probably prevent me from using it, is that I can't make the "new" icon go away. For someone who ignores pro wrestling, Movies & TV, or a couple other busy forums, this feature will essentially have the same effect as just never clicking the "mark forum read" button for that forum, in that it will just always be indicating new posts in that forum.

Not always - as I said, it should only show NEW if a new post was posted in the forum in question within the last hour.

Yeah, but during the day time, how often do some of the forums go an hour without a post? Maybe I'm underestimating how often that happens. It's not a huge issue either way. It just seems clicking the mark as read arrow once in a while in less annoying to me.

I'm getting a lot of broken images in this thread and only this thread. It looks like it's searching for images at http://the-w.com/thread.php/images/level.gif , for example. No idea why it would be looking there, but there you are.

Yeah, there is something odd with this particular thread and thread.php. threadx.php works fine.

I... don't know why.

OK, I know WHY this is. Beyond the fact that you're all using IE, that is. I'll fix it.

I've changed my mind and like this feature. I in fact WAS overestimating the frequency of posts in the Movies & TV and Music forums. Thanks!

Well, I've already thought long and hard about why this WOULDN'T work, but I'm ready to be persuaded otherwise. Time to huddle up on AIM again...
